I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. discuss what might happen next in the story (comic strip BP23);
2. write a story about aliens based on the comic strip in part B.
II. Key competence focus
1. Learn the speaking skill: Using speculative mood.
2. Find out the differences between declarative mood, subjunctive mood and speculative mood.
3. Learn the ways to write about novels: use adjectives to create a mood and techniques to create the plot.

T greets the class.
T: Class begins, boys and girls! Good morning/afternoon!
Step 1 Dialogue CP24
1. Help Students to understand speculative mood.
T: Read the following three sentences and find out their differences.
1) She travelled around the UK last year. (Declarative mood)
2) If only she had travelled around the UK! (Subjunctive mood)
3) She must have travelled around the UK. (Speculative mood)
T asks some students to discuss the three sentences.
T: We know from the first sentence that “she did travel around the UK and has some experiences of UK.”, so it is a display of facts, using a declarative mood.
T: We know from the second sentence that “she hasn’t been to the UK and she wished she had been there.” So this sentence states an assumption, using subjunctive mood.
T: We know from the third sentence, “In the speaker’s opinion, she has been to the UK. It has not proved a FACT, but there is great possibility that she has travelled around the UK.” So this sentence states an inference, using speculative mood.
2. Learn expressions related to speculative mood.
T: When we use speculative mood, we usually include “I think, may/might/could, likely, probable, possible” in speaking.
T: Go through the expressions given in part C.

3. Talk about the comic strip BP23.
T: Discuss what might happen next in the comic strip BP23. Use as much speculative mood as possible.
Sample answer:
A: What do you think will happen next in the story? Where are the alien and the boy going?
B: It’s quite likely that Alf will take the boy to visit his home planet. But what will they do once they arrive?
A: Paul is a visitor, so Alf would want to introduce him to his family. When they land on Alf’s home planet, Paul will walk out into the strange new world feeling excited but nervous.
B: For sure! There’ll be unusual buildings, trees and animals. And while Paul accepts the reality of where he is, we can introduce a new character — a green space monster with three octopus’ legs, one enormous yellow eye and a mouth full of sharp teeth. It moves quickly towards Paul. What will happen to him?
A: Paul’s first thought is to run away. But where? Perhaps he’ll try to get back into the spaceship, but he finds the door is locked. And he’s surprised that the scary alien monster jumps up at Alf instead!
B: Yes, and what is likely to occur later? Does Paul try to save Alf?
A: Hmm, I think it’s quite probable that Paul will run away and look for a place to hide. After all, he has no idea how dangerous the monster is. What could possibly happen after that?
B: The monster follows Paul, finds him and just as it is about to attack him, Alf comes to his rescue.
A: Paul finds out that the “scary” monster is actually Alf’s lovable pet! It just wants to lick Paul’s face.
B: That’s a perfect twist in the tale! How is the story going to end?
A: Well, Alf takes Paul to meet his family — after all, that is the original plan!

1. Learn about writing techniques
Learning about the language
T shows a sentence with several adjectives.
Manhattan is impersonal, superficial, and it is a fast-moving city. |
T: How do you feel after reading the sentence?
T: After reading, you may feel Manhattan is the fast-pace city with no personal touch. What cause you such feeling? Now read through “Learning about the language”, and you will find the answer.
To make your story impressive, you need to give vivid descriptions using your observation and imagination. When describing a setting, you can use adjectives to create a mood. Adjectives such as “dark”, “black”, or “deserted” can create a mysterious atmosphere in outer space. |
T explains what the mood is.
T: Maya Angelou said: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Now what is mood? It is what readers feel. It affects them psychologically and emotionally.
T: Would you please give us an impressive description of creating a mood?
Sample answers:
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit (霍比特人). Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

Learning about writing techniques
T: Let’s learn about the techniques of creating plots, which you need to write your story.
T: The core of any story is the plot. To create and outline the plot, you can ask these questions:
What is the conflict? How does the conflict affect the characters? What is the climax? How do the main characters solve the conflict? What is the ending? |
T explains what conflict is and what climax is.
T: To create the plot of a story, we’d better ask ourselves the above five questions. You may be confused about what conflict is and what climax is.
T: We all know that conflict is needed to keep viewers engaged, to create an emotional response, and to ultimately push the story forward. Without conflict in a story, the film, show, or novel, may seem a bit boring.
T: The climax in a story is the point, usually near the end of the third act, where the value of the story is tested to its highest degree. As such, it is also the moment in a story with the greatest amount of drama, action, and movement.

2. Work out the outline

3. Finish off the story
Sample:
Alf took Paul to his home planet first because he wanted Paul to see what life was like there. Paul was nervous but also excited to be the first human visitor to another planet. Walking out of the spaceship, Paul noticed that this was an unusual planet. He could see strange buildings, trees and animals. Suddenly, a green space monster with three octopus’ legs, one enormous yellow eye and a mouth full of sharp teeth moved quickly towards Paul. He realized that he was in danger!
Paul tried to run back into the spaceship, but the door was locked. The space monster moved past Paul and jumped up at Alf. The monster was giving strange growls and was attacking Alf, so Paul looked for a place to hide. He ran into a building close by, running up the stairs as fast as he could. But it was too late — he could hear the growling monster coming after him up the stairs. Luckily, Paul saw a big cupboard and he quickly hid inside it.
Paul could hear the monster’s heavy footsteps as it came into the room. Paul was shaking — there was nowhere to escape. Without warning the cupboard door flew open. The monster was getting ready to attack Paul when Alf came running into the room and grabbed the monster by the neck and shouted, “No!” Then, he held his hand out to Paul and helped him out of the cupboard and said, “Paul, I’d like to introduce you to my baby pet, Fluffy!” Fluffy looked at Paul, yawned, and promptly fell asleep. Paul was still shaken up but felt relieved to know that the “scary” monster was not dangerous after all, and actually just wanted to lick his face.
Alf told Paul he would take him to meet his family. Together, Alf, Paul and Fluffy went to Alf’s house nearby. After meeting Alf’s parents and sister, Paul realized that even though he and Alf were totally different species, they had some things in common. For example, they both had a sister and loved their family very much. Paul was also intrigued by the many differences between Alf’s world and the Earth. He could not wait to explore other parts of the universe with his new best friend.

T: Check your writing and exchange drafts between you and your partner. Pay attention to the following aspects:

Living beyond the Earth
The United Nations has estimated that by 2050, the world’s population will explode from today’s seven billion to over nine billion. We do not have a clue what the possible consequences would be. Not surprisingly, quite a number of people are toying with the idea of leaving this planet and seeking a new future in outer space.
The most straightforward benefit of populating outer space would be that it increases humanity’s chance of survival. By moving a certain portion of the population to other
planets, we could relieve the Earth of its burden: overpopulation. Plus, the whole of humanity is stuck on the Earth and history has taught us that it would not be wise to put all our eggs in one basket. Should any planetary disaster happen, for example, an asteroid crashing into our home, it would wipe out the entire human race.
Taking the first steps towards a permanent settlement on other planets will also benefit humanity in other ways. The missions to outer space have helped and will continue to help us develop advanced technologies that will no doubt have practical applications back on the Earth. For example, shock absorbers, originally designed to protect astronauts during the extreme conditions of space shuttle launches, are now used in many earthquake-prone areas. In addition, these great projects will bring humankind together. Once we focus on such an ambitious common goal, we can put our differences aside and instead work towards achieving it.
It is true that the Earth is the only home human beings have ever known. However, remaining a single-planet species would severely limit our chances of long-term survival. To save ourselves from the tragic fate of dinosaurs, we need to seek ways to overcome these challenges, leave the Earth and reach for the stars.
