    2. How to understand some complex sentences in the text.

    IV. Teaching procedures

    T greets the class.

T: Class begins, boys and girls! Good morning/afternoon!

    Step 1 Reading

    1. Reading for the main idea of the text and outline the text

T: Go through the magazine article and find out the main idea of the text.

T: Now you have read through the whole text. Whats the general idea of the text?

T: Right. The title Why we explore has told us the theme of the text. The main idea is Reasons for space exploration.

T: What should we do to work out the outline of the text?

T: In an expository text, youll find every first sentence of each paragraph is the subject sentence of the paragraph. Condense and reshape the sentences, and youll outline the text.

T: We have found that there are five reasons for space exploration: our own instinct, learning about universe, civil application of technologies for space exploration, economic benefits, and education and inspiration of the next generation.

T: Now we can outline the text as follows:

    Sample answer AP26:

    Reasons for space exploration

1 It is in our nature to explore.

2 It enables us to learn more about the origin, evolution, and likely future of the universe.

3 Technologies first researched and developed for space exploration can be used to solve some of the big problems on the Earth.

4 We profit economically from the space industry and it also creates jobs.

5 It educates and inspires the next generation.

    【设计意图:首先获得文章的主旨,再获得文章的主干信息,由此形成课文的概要。关于如何写文章的概要,可以观看本课对应的微课:How to write a summary.

    2. Reading for the details

T: Read the text again and fill in the blanks with the given words in their proper forms.

economy, education, explore, discovery, investment, origination, learn, know

Why do we have interest in the (1)________ of the space? Human desire drives us to know the (2)________. As a result, we learn more about how the universe (3)________ and evolves. Then we can predict where it goes. With more about the universe (4)________, we may find life in the outer space. As space technologies like shock absorbers and liquid hydrogen (5)________ and researched, we may solve some big problems on the Earth. Though we have (6)________ the space industry hugely, the space industry can create jobs and benefit us (7)________. Whats more, the next generations (8)________ and inspired to participate in it.

    Answers: 1. exploration 2. unknown 3. originates 4. learnt 5. are discovered 6. invested 7. economically 8. are educated

How to write a summary。】

    3. BP26 Discussion 1

T: The article talks about the advantages of space exploration. Do you agree or disagree with the authors opinion? Why?

    Sample answer:

I agree with the author’s opinion. The exploration of space has brought us technologies that we use in our everyday lives. For example, the small cameras that we find on our mobile devices were first developed so that they could be used on the spacecraft.

I do not agree with the author’s opinion, because the focus should be on developing technology to keep the Earth and all its inhabitants safe and healthy. I think that preventing climate change is more important than hurrying to make advances in technology that are not necessary for living well on the Earth.

    4. CP26 Discussion 2

T: Our exploration of space has already taught us many things. What do you think the future of space exploration holds for human understanding? Give reasons for your opinion and support your reasons with evidence.

    Sample answer:

The future of space exploration will expand our understanding of our role as humans. As space exploration reveals more mysteries, our perspective of our planet and ourselves will change. Past space exploration raised awareness of the need for global solutions to challenges. Furthermore, space exploration requires global cooperation, which is already practised on the International Space Station. Hopefully, future knowledge will help us better understand the importance of working together to solve other problems on the Earth, such as poverty, hunger and war.

Step 3 Understanding the complex sentences

T: Thanks to the length and complex grammatical structure, some sentences in the text are hard to understand. However, if you can find out the main body of the sentence, it will be much easier for you to understand the whole sentence. Now lets try some sentences.

    1. The reality is that space exploration is extremely difficult and dangerous, can take a very long time and costs a huge amount of money. (Para. 1)

    1. The main body of the sentence is The reality is that The conjunction that guides the predicative clause, in which space exploration is subject. After the subject, there is a copula-predicative structure, and two predicate-object structure.

    2. Some people believe that while space exploration expands our understanding of the universe, it is a waste of the public purse and does nothing to enhance the quality of our lives here on the earth. (Para. 1)

    3. With each space mission comes greater insight, thus motivating us to continue along the same path of adventure. (Para. 2)

    6. With technologies first discovered and researched in space exploration, we can solve some of the big problems facing mankind, making our lives safer and easier. (Para. 4)

    【设计意图:影响阅读质量还有长句,长句语法结构复杂,但抽出句子主干,句子就容易理解了,此节帮助学生掌握阅读长句的技巧,也有助于学生深度理解课文。】

    V. Homework

    1. Watch the micro lesson: How to write a summary. (Optional)

    2. Finish off B1 in the workbook.

    1) What are the dangers on Mars?

    1) To begin with, Mars is extremely cold. Also, its atmosphere is rich in carbon dioxide, so people will not be able to breathe. Still, with no magnetic field, Mars is exposed to much higher levels of radiation.

    2) Briefly summarize what life on Mars will be like. Include at least three aspects.

    2) Since Mars has high levels of radiation, people in Martian cities will probably live underground at first and then above ground. Since it is expensive to send materials to Mars, Martian citizens will have to make good use of the planet’s resources and manufacture everything they need. Settlers will probably follow a vegan diet. Also, people there will not travel much, because of the radiation. But they may take advantage of Mars’ low gravity and invent new sports to entertain themselves.
