II. Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A (10分)
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Will Robots Take Your Job in the Future?
In 2013, researchers at Oxford University did a study on the future of work. They concluded that almost one in every two jobs have a high risk of (21) __________ (automate) by machines. Machine learning is the technology that’s responsible for most of this situation. It’s the most powerful branch of artificial intelligence. It allows machines to learn from data and imitate some of the things (22) __________ humans can do.
Machine learning started making its way into industry in the early 1990s. It started with relatively simple tasks. It started with things (23) __________ assessing credit risk from loan applications, sorting the mail by reading handwritten characters from zip codes. Over the past few years, we (24) __________ (make) dramatic breakthroughs. Machine learning is now capable of far, far (25) __________ (complex) tasks. In 2012, Kaggle challenged its community (26) __________ (build) an algorithm (算法) that could grade high-school essays. The winning algorithms were able to match the grades given by human teachers.
Now, (27) __________ (give) the right data, machines are going to outperform humans at tasks like this. A teacher (28) __________ read 10,000 essays over a 40-year career. A machine can read millions of essays within minutes. We have no chance of competing against machines on frequent, high-volume tasks.
But there are things we can do that machines can’t do. (29) __________ machines have made very little progress is in dealing with novel situations. They can’t handle things they haven’t seen many times before. The fundamental limitation of machine learning is that it needs to learn from large volumes of past data. Now, humans don’t. We have the ability to connect seemingly different threads to solve problems we’ve never seen before. Machines cannot compete with us when it comes to dealing with novel situations, and this (30) __________ (put) a fundamental limit on the human tasks that machines will automate.
Section B (10分)

A. pace B. registered C. assess D. baseline E. reverse
F. shifting G. production H. fundamental I. pointing J. invisible
K. acknowledged
Chemical Pollution Has Passed Safe Global Limit
Chemical pollution threatens Earth’s systems by damaging the biological and physical processes that support all life. For example, pesticides (杀虫剂) wipe out many non-target insects, which are (31) __________ to all ecosystems and, therefore, to the supply of clean air, water and food.
“There has been an increase 50 times in the (32) __________ of chemicals since 1950 and this is projected to become three times as much again by 2050,” said Patricia, who was part of the study team. “The (33) __________ that societies are producing and releasing new chemicals into the environment is not in agreement with staying within a safe operating space for humanity.”
Determining whether chemical pollution has crossed a planetary border is complex because there is no pre-human (34) __________, unlike with the climate crisis and the pre-industrial level of CO2 in the atmosphere. There are a huge number of chemical compounds (35) __________ for use—about 350,000—and only a tiny proportion of these have been assessed for safety.
So the research used a combination of measurements to (36) __________ the situation. These included the rate of production of chemicals, which is rising rapidly, and their release into the environment, which is happening much faster than the ability of authorities to track the effects.
The well-known negative effects of some chemicals were also part of the assessment. The scientists (37) __________ that the data was limited in many areas, but said the weight of evidence pointed to a break of the planetary boundary. “There’s evidence that things are (38) __________ in the wrong direction every step of the way,” said Prof Bethanie Carney Almroth, who was part of the team. “For example, the total mass of plastics now is greater than the total mass of all living mammals (哺乳动物). That to me is a pretty clear indication that we’ve crossed a border. We’re in trouble, but there are things we can do to (39) __________ some of this.”
Patricia said that (40) __________ to a circular economy was really important and that meant changing materials and products so they can be reused.”

Section B (22分)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
an otter
Otters, are cute, this no one can deny. They have big eyes, short and flat noses and claws (爪子) like tiny hands. They look even cuter when they wear hats and throw food balls into their mouths as if they were bar snacks, like Takechiyo, a pet otter in Japan. Documenting Takechiyo’s funny behavior has earned his owner nearly 230,000 followers on Instagram, a photo-sharing app.
Takechiyo’s fame reflects a craze across east and South-East Asia for keeping the cute creatures as pets. Enthusiasts in Japan visit cafés where they pay to hug them; Indonesian owners parade their pets around on leads or go swimming with them, then share their pictures online. But these enjoyable photos mask a trade that is doing a lot of damage. Even before they became fashionable companions for humans, Asia’s wild otters faced plenty of threats. Their habitats are disappearing. They have long been hunted for their coats, or killed by farmers who wish to prevent them consuming fishes. The pet trade, which began picking up in the early 2000s but appeared to speed up a few years ago, has made things worse. The numbers of wild Asian small-clawed otters and smooth-coated otters, two species that are in highest demand, have declined by at least 30% in the three decades to 2019.
The international agreement that governs trade in wildlife, known as CITES, now prohibits cross-border trade in these species. But laws banning ownership are often poorly implemented, as in Thailand, or full of holes, as in Indonesia. And the otter-keeping craze has been dramatically improved by the internet, says Vincent Nijman of Oxford Brookes University. In 2017 TRAFFIC, a British charity that monitors the wildlife trade, spent nearly five months looking at Facebook and other social-media sites in five South-East Asian countries. During that time, it found around1,000 otters advertised for sale online.
In any case, otters do not even make particularly good pets. Every year the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, a charity in Indonesia’s capital, receives some ten otters from people who have struggled to look after them. Faizul Duha, the founder of an Indonesian otter-owners’ group, admits that his two animals emit a “very specific” (read: fishy) smell. They bite humans and chew on furniture. Their scream can be heard blocks away. And their cages need cleaning every two-to-three hours. That is how often they empty their bowels (肠道).
56. The function of the first paragraph is to ___________.
A. present the main idea B. introduce the main topic
C. set readers thinking D. illustrate the writer’s point
57. According to the passage, which of the following mainly drives the otter trade?

When structural engineer Peter James arrived at the Bent Pyramid, his task was to secure the structure’s remaining “coat”—its smooth external envelope. But why was it collapsing in the first place?
The foundation seemed completely stable. The current theory—that “the missing coat was removed by local opportunist thieves”—didn’t inspire confidence: That could explain the destruction at the lower levels, but the damage extended far up the pyramid and “in an apparently random manner, with no signs of hollow from temporary scaffolding (脚手架) or of any cutting of the blocks to aid removal,” James writes in a structural engineering trade publication. The damage just did not look like the result of thieves. Rather, as James puts it, it “appears to be caused by a giant whose hand has swept across the face of the pyramid with enormous energy, sucking out the facing and leaving the rough empty sockets (底座).”
So, what was causing the collapse? James presents a new explanation: thermal movement—that is to say the expansion and contraction of the limestone (石灰石) with temperature changes—has ground down the rocks and shifted their positions. During the day, the temperature rises to 40°C across the face of the outer cover, then at night cools to 3⁰C because of the lack of cover and exposure to the winds. This gives an average daily temperature shift of 37°C. The photographs of the Bent Pyramid show how thermal expansion has caused the blocks to move to the edges, where they have separated.
He estimates that the motion can amount to 1¼ inches per 328 feet. As the stones move, dust and sand would fall from the stones and fill in the spaces between them. The spaces into which they could contract at night would shrink, and over time they would be pushed out of position. “Multiply this endless movement by the number of days that the pyramid has been built and you have the reason why all the outer cover has moved to the extremities and then fallen off,” James writes. “It may then have been picked up by opportunists and removed from the site.”
The Bent Pyramid is one of the best preserved and, as a result, it provides a unique opportunity for studying how the collapse is happening. James theorizes that the reason the Bent Pyramid keeps its cover, while the Red Pyramid and the Great Pyramid “have virtually none” is that, ironically, the Bent Pyramid had worse construction to begin with. As the Egyptians became more skilled, and developed more accurate construction techniques, the space between the stones disappeared, and the structures were less able to absorb the expansion and contraction of the limestone. The other, more perfect pyramids may have developed external cracks rather quickly, and, James assumes, may be why eventually the Egyptians moved their burial grounds to the Valley of the Kings. The pyramids’ perfection became their imperfection.
63. According to the passage, what happened to the Bent Pyramid?
A. Its structure was fixed by James. B. Its coat was stolen by local thieves.
C. The foundation was strengthened. D. Parts of its outer covering fell apart.
64. The word “thermal” in paragraph 3 most probably means ___________.
A. lasting for a limited time B. affecting the structure of something
C. relating to or caused by heat D. relating to the weather in an area
65. By “The pyramids’ perfection became their imperfection”, the author means ___________.
A. the more skilled Egyptians neglected the space between the stones
B. the precise construction prevented thermal movement in the pyramids
C. the Egyptians moved their graves because the pyramids were too perfect
D. the Bent Pyramid was preserved with accurate techniques while others were not
66.The passage is mainly about ___________.
A. a new theory about the collapse of a pyramid
B. the Bent Pyramid that is one of the best preserved
C. an engineer who secures the structure of pyramids
D. a comparison between the Bent Pyramid and other pyramids

Conflict in Literature
What makes a book or movie exciting? What makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens or stay until the end of the movie? Conflict. Yes, conflict. (67) __________ Most stories are written to have characters, a setting and a plot, but what sets apart a truly great story from the one that might not finish reading is conflict.

First, you need to understand the different types of conflict, which can essentially be broken down into two categories: internal and external conflict. (69) __________ An external conflict is one in which the character faces a challenge with an external force, like another character, an act of nature, or even society.

Cargo Bikes Bring Home the Goods
Since the first lockdown (封锁), increasing numbers of companies have started delivering their products on electric cargo bikes. According to the Brought by Bike, there are nearly 450 independent businesses and tradespeople across the UK delivering goods to customers using electricity and pedal (踏板) power.
The Bike Drop was established in the early days of the pandemic (疫情) to help businesses struggling to reach customers. “There was interest as soon as we opened. Companies wanted to choose the greener option for deliveries while customers loved having their shopping delivered by bike—and we all love having cleaner, quieter, safer streets,” said Harry McKeown, the managing director of the Bike Drop. During the first month of lockdown the grocery sector recorded a 91% increase in home deliveries. McKeown said demand for their delivery services started high and had continued to climb. “We soon had 13 employees delivering items for 36 local businesses,” he said. “We now have a group of electric bikes that have made over 6,500 individual pickups and deliveries for local businesses, cycled over 10,000 kilometers and saved more than 2,300 kilos of CO 2.” E-cargo bikes can move quickly through city streets, meaning they are able to deliver packages 60% faster than their van equivalents. They are cleaner— saving about 90% in carbon emissions—quieter, and cut traffic jams as a bike uses a small part of the road space of a van.
There are also a growing number of electric cargo bikes covering remote areas: Cargodale started delivering in the valleys of West Yorkshire and has experienced a business boom. The Cargodale co-founder Beate Kubitz said: “I live in a rural area and when lockdown happened and home deliveries increased, I saw parades of vans coming down my little lane, destroying the delicate countryside roads and polluting our air. I couldn’t believe there wasn’t an alternative.” Kubitz and some of her mountain-biker friends hired a cargo bike and experimented with local deliveries. “The interest from businesses and customers was immediate and strong,” she said. Cargodale has 15 riders delivering for up to 100 local businesses.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Today, let’s begin with note-taking techniques. Note-taking is an important skill not only for taking classes, but also for doing your job in the future. I’d like to draw your attention to certain points about taking notes.
First, remember that note-taking should be 75% listening and only 25% writing, so don’t try to write down every single word that the teacher says. Ignore what is unimportant and write in phrases, not complete sentences.
Second, leave spaces and lines between main ideas. You may want to add some information later. I find that some of you are very good at making use of color, mapping webs, and symbols such as arrows, circles and boxes. I highly recommend these tools to all of you, because the use of them makes the outline more easily readable and interesting than the blocks of text. It also makes sure that important words stand out.

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
If you pay attention to the news, you most likely are very familiar with the fact that pollution is an issue. Unclean industries since the Industrial Revolution have pumped many different pollutants into our environment. Noise pollution is something that is not often discussed because it is deep-rooted in your normal day-to-day routine. Unless you live in the remote countryside, you are most likely attacked by noise at all hours of the day; these noises are what make up noise pollution.
The sound of your air conditioner, street noise from cars, a plane flying overhead, and even your neighbor mowing their lawn at the crack of dawn are all sources of noise pollution. While these are always present, most people tune them out and live their day normally.
While you may not notice these noises, your ears definitely sense them, and over time noise pollution can have harmful impacts on public health. Understanding how noise pollution may impact you negatively can enable you to understand why it is important to protect yourself from surrounding noise.

W: Hey, John. Can I talk to you for a minute?
M: Sure, what’s up?
W: I wanted to let you know about a book club I joined a few months ago. I know you do a lot of reading, so I thought you might want to come with me next month.
M: Oh, that sounds like fun. When does the group meet?
W: Usually the last Saturday of the month at 7:30 in the evening. Is that too late for you?
M: No, I think that’s okay. What do you talk about in the group?
W: Well, every month we choose a new book. And then during the next meeting, we discuss it.
M: What books have you read?
W: Quite a lot. Recently we have read The Beautiful Mind, Paper Towns and The Great Gatsby. Now we are reading The Kite Runner.
M: The Kite Runner? I’ve heard that’s a good book. What is it about?
W: It’s a story about a boy who grows up in Afghanistan during the 1980s and struggles to find his place in the world because of the results of a series of extremely unpleasant childhood events.
M: That sounds interesting. I’d love to come.
W: Great! The next meeting will be held in two weeks, so you still have time to read the book.
M: OK.
