The next time you have cheese loudly, remember the French scientist Louis Pasteur who discovered that bad milk, and many diseases are caused by bacteria(细菌).

Louis Pasteur is known as the father of microbiology. In his lifetime, he not only proved that bacteria are the cause of diseasesbut also discovered the process of vaccination(接种疫苗)which has saved billions of lives.

When Pasteur worked with chickens that were suffering from cholera (霍乱)during his experiments, he accidentally spread cholera to his chickens. Pasteup’s chickens became mildly sick but did not die. This was strange as every chicken that came near cholera earlier had died. He realized soon that the cholera had become weak. By the time he tried again, the chickens he had cured earlier did not get cholera anymore. He realized that a weak cholera helped his chickens develop an antibody against it.

Later, Pasteur went on to try this on cowspigs and dogs. All his research helped him develop different vaccines. We now know that the process of vaccination introduces a weakened kind of bacteria into our body. Our body reacts by creating antibodies to fight the bacteria. Now, when our body come across the same bacteria which are much stronger, it can fight them off.

Louis Pasteur received numerous awards for the advancement of biology, chemistry, and medicine. He founded the Pasteur Institute to study diseases. It was the first university to teach microbiology and today there are 32 institutes across 29 countries. For every child vaccinated against a deadly disease, we have Louis Pasteur to thank.

    B. He was a professor at the Pasteur Institute.

    C. His discoveries brought many profits and awards to him.

    D. He discovered the connection between bacteria and diseases.

25.What can we learn from his experiment with chickens?

    B. Pasteur spread cholera to chickens on purpose.

    C. All chickens suffered from cholera died at last.

    D. The weakened cholera couldn’t kill the living creatures.

    26. What is the function of the process of vaccination?

    A. It builds up people’s body.

    B. Without it, people will die.

    C. It improves people’s ability to avoid diseases.

    D. It can kill all the diseases and make the sick healthy.

    27. What is the purpose of the article?

    A. To show the discoveries of the vaccination.

    B. To call on children to learn from Louis Pasteur.

    C. To introduce an important invention in microbiology.

    D. To honor Louis Pasteur and his contribution to the world.

Simple exercises can help to make people more playful and feel more satisfied with their lives, according to a new study by experts from Martin Luther University.

Playfulness is a personality trait (特征)that is expressed differently in people. “Playful people try hard to deal with boredom. They manage to turn almost any everyday situation into an entertaining experience," explains Professor Rene Proyer, an expert at MLU. For example, they enjoy word games, or like playing around. According to Proyer, this does not mean that these people are particularly silly. Instead, they can put this trait to good use in many situationsThey have an eye for detail, easily accept new ideas and can make a monotonous task interesting for them.

The experts from Halle carried out a study on 533 people. They were divided into three experimental groups and a control group without any task, They completed daily exercises for seven days to increase their playfulness. For example, they had to write down three situations in which they had behaved(表现)particularly playfullythey used their trait to be playful in an unfamiliar situation, or they were to think more broadly about the playful behavior they had observed in themselves that day.

All groups filled a form before and immediately after weeks one, two, four and twelve after the intervention(干预)with which the researchers measured various personality traits. “We thought that the exercises would lead people to consciously(下意识地)focus their attention on playfulness and use it more often ,”says Proyer. And indeed, the tasks did lead to an increase in playfulness. The researchers also observed an improvement in peopled happiness.

The results of the study serve as a starting point for future use. “I believe that we can use this knowledge in everyday life to improve various areas. For example, special interventions in the workplace could lead to more fun or novel ideas at work, ”says Proyer.

    28. What does the underline wordmonotonous ” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Simple   B. Boring   C. Helpful   D. Exciting.

    29. What were the daily exercises intended to do in the study?

    A. Improve people's playfulness.

    B. Prove the existence of playfulness

    C. Find out the meaning of playfulness.

    D. Examine people's degree of playfulness.

    30. How does Proyer feel about the results of the study?

    A. Surprised  B. Confused.  C. Doubtful  D. Satisfied

31.What did Proyer's words in the last paragraph mean?

    A. The research method needed to be improved.

    B.  The results could inspire real life applications.

    C.  The study might start future arguments in the field.

    D. The workplace especially needed special interventions.

    D

We all know that drinking too much is bad for usbut what about moderate (适度)drinking?

We’ve known about the relationship between moderate drinking and good health for quite some

time. Researchers have identified that people who drink a moderate amount are at a lower risk of things like heart disease and fatness than both people who drink a lot and people who never drink.

It’s fairly well-established that if you look at society at large, people who drink a moderate amount are the healthiest in a number of ways.

The problem is that moderate drinking isn’t an isolated behavior(孤立的行为).You can’t easily separate moderate drinking from the people who drink moderately, which means that you can't easily identify whether it’s actually the alcohol (酒)that’s improving people’s health or something else.

The issue is pretty obvious when you look at the people who drink moderately in all of these studies. They tend to be more educated, smoke less and in general are better off than both people who drink a lot and those who never drink. People who never drink are also different in a lot of waysfor example, illness, poverty(贪穷)and previous alcoholism.

Recent studies in Israel and New Zealand show that there probably aren’t any significant health benefits of moderate drinking. Once you get rid of the effects of societyeven a small amount of drink is connected to worse health.

It seems that moderate drinking probably isn’t good for our health after all. While there may be some minor heart health benefits, alcohol is addictive(使人成的)and causes damage many other organs.

I’m going to keep drinking, but not for my health. Wine is delicious ,and beer is just wonderful .Drink for the tastedrink to socialise but don’t drink because you think it's going to heal your heart. But if possible, try to drink less.

    32. What is the common belief about drinking alcohol?

    A. Drinking has little to do with health.

    B. Moderate drinking benefits our health.

    C. Drinking reduces the risk of heart disease.

    D. The healthier you are, the more you can drink.

    33. Who is more likely to drink moderately?

    A. A rich man.     B. a sick man.

    C. A former alcoholic.    D. A poorly-educated man.

    34. What do we know about drinking from the fifth paragraph?

    A. Drinking is an isolated behaviour,

    B. Drinking is good for the society,

    C. Drinking is more of a social activity.

    D. Drinking can cause bad health.

    35. What can be the best title of this text?

    A. Is Alcohol Suitable for You?  B. What Is Moderate Drinking?

    C.  Do You Know How to Drink? D. Is Moderate Drinking Healthy?
