Having taken a photo of her avocado(牛油果)toast for breakfast, Emily posted it on Instagram, a popular social photo-sharing app. Emily is one of the millions of millennials—those born between the years 1981 and 1996—in the West who are in love with avocados.
So why is the avocado, a green-colored fruit with a rough black outer shell originating from Mexico, loved so much by millennials?
At the start of the last century in the US, avocados weren't popular. But this changed thanks to good marketing. Firstly, their name was changed from “alligator pear” to the nicer-sounding“avocado”. Then in the 1990s, at the Super Bowl—the US' famous annual sports event watched by tens of millions on TV—a Mexican sauce made with avocados called guacamole was advertised. After this, avocados' popularity soared. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the value of avocados increased by nearly 70 percent between 1988 and the year 2000 in the US.
But it wasn't until the 2010s, when millennials started the avocado toast trend that it became a fruit celebrity. Avocados, as a superfood rich in nutrients and “good” fats, are perfect for millennials, who are regarded as a health-conscious generation. As reported by USA Today, millennials are more interested in food than previous generations. For them, eating is not just about feeling full; it's about a lifestyle. They care more about their well-being and eat healthier and more plant-based foods.
Of these foods, avocado toast is the poster child. On a list of the top 25 millennial food trends, The recipe. com ranked avocado toast as number one. Millennials are a social-media-savvy generation, who love sharing their lives online through artistic pictures. The avocado craze hasn't stopped with eating. Searching online, you'll find endless results for avocado-themed items. In 2019, Disney even released a line of avocado-themed products.
    21. Why does the author mention Emily's story in paragraph 1?
    A. To promote a healthy fruit.
    B. To show millennials' love for avocados.
    C. To indicate the popularity of Instagram.
    D. To describe a typical lifestyle of millennials.
    22. When did avocados actually make a hit?
    A. In the initial stage of the 19th century.
    B. Shortly after the 1990s.
    C. Around the year 2000.
    D. In the 2010s.
    23. What has contributed to the popularity of avocado toast?
    A. Millennials sharing artistic pictures online.
    B. Therecipe.com ranking it as the tastiest food.
    C. The good advertising marketing skills.
    D. The amount of avocado-themed items online.

On May 15, 2013, Sarah and David Brown heard the words every parent dreads: Their newborn wasn't going to make it. Their twins—a girl and a boy—were born two minutes apart and 13 weeks premature, weighing just over two pounds each. Doctors had tried to save the boy for 20 minutes but saw no improvement. His heartbeat was nearly gone, and he'd stopped . breathing. The baby had just moments to live.
“I saw him gasp, but the doctor said it was no use, ” Sarah said. “I know it sounds stupid, but if he was still gasping, that was a sign of life. I wasn't going to give up easily. ” Still, the couple knew this was likely goodbye. In an effort to cherish her last minutes with the tiny boy, Sarah asked to hold him. “I wanted to meet him, and for him to know us, ” Sarah told the Daily Mail five years later. “We'd resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to lose him, and we were just trying to make the most of those last, precious moments. ”
Sarah unwrapped the boy, whom the couple had already named Jamie, from his hospital blanket and ordered David to take his shirt off and join the boy and the girl in bed. The first-time parents wanted their son to be as warm as possible and hoped the skin-to-skin contact would improve his condition. They also talked to him.
“We were trying to make him stay, ” Sarah said. “We explained his name and that he had a twin that he had to look out for and how hard we had tried to have him. ” Then something miraculous happened. Jamie gasped again—and then he started breathing. Finally, he reached for his father's finger.
Eight years later, Jamie and his sister, Emily, are happy and healthy. The Browns only recently told the kids the story of their birth. “Emily burst into tears, ” Sarah said. “She kept hugging Jamie. This whole experience makes you cherish them more. ”

Many people enjoy biscuits at teatime. But people with diabetes have to be careful about eating sweet food.
Diabetes is a metabolic(代谢的)disease. If a patient's blood sugar is not well controlled, serious problems can occur. A patient may experience dizziness and fatigue, but also have kidney failure, blindness and heart disease, accordingto Medical News Today.
But a new research may make it possible to “treat diabetes by eating biscuits”. Researchersfrom PekingUniversity and East China Normal University successfully developed a new cell using synthetic(合成的)biology technology. Their study was published in Nature Chemical Biology in November.
In their research, diabetic mice implanted with the cells can increase insulin(胰岛素)levels and lower blood sugar as long as they eat specific amino acid(氨基酸)biscuits. It only takes 90 minutes for the mice to reduce their blood sugar, which amounts to the time after an insulin injection, Liu Tao, one of the authors, told Science andTechnology Daily.
This kind of biscuit does not directly lower blood sugar levels, but is a “key” to insulin. The special amino acids in the biscuits help to start the insulin translation process. The end result is controlled blood sugar, according to Ye Haifeng, one of the authors.
“This unnatural amino acid is similar to the ingredients added in many health drinks and is very friendly to the human body, ” Liu told Science and Technology Daily. Maybe one day, people will need to take artificial amino acids before meals, or eat foods containing artificial amino acids suitable for diabetics, so they can control their blood sugar.
Although scientists in synthetic biology have paved the way for possible future treatments, their findings won't be ready for patients anytime soon. “Synthetic biology is still an early-stage discipline compared to the traditional diabetes therapeutic development timeline, with most technologies currently in the preclinical stages in the lab, ” Ira Pastor, CEO of the life sciences company Bioquark, told US News.
    27. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
    A. Diseases that can affect blood sugar.
    B. Severe problems caused by diabetes.
    C. Blood sugar's effects on the metabolic system.
    D. A kind of metabolic disease that is called diabetes.
    28. How did the blood sugar of the diabetic mice decrease in the study?
    A. Scientists gave them biscuits with less sugar.
    B. The amino acid biscuits they ate contained insulin.
    C. Scientists implanted cells that can directly lower blood sugar.
    D. The implanted cells and the specific amino acids increased insulin.
    29. Which of the following would Ira Pastor agree with?
    A. Synthetic biology is developing quickly at present.
    B. There remains a long way for this therapy to enter hospitals.
    C. Synthetic biology proves the most effective solution to diabetes.
    D. Many traditional therapeutic diabetes technologies are still in the lab.

If you really want to take control of those worries and you're finding that the above strategies don't work, allow yourself to worry for a certain time period every day. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I speak of it without tears filling eyes at the memory.
When our L3011 left the Orlando airport that Friday morning, we were a high-energy group. The early-morning flights hosted mainly professional people going to Atlanta for a day or two of business. And a couple of rows to my left, a seemingly 6-year-old kid nestled in her mother's arms.
Immediately the aircraft took off, and it was clear that something was wrong for it was bumping up and down and jerking left to right. But as experienced travelers, we just took these minor problems for granted. However, minutes after we were in the air, our plane began falling wildly and one wing lunged downward. The plane climbed higher but that didn't help.
The pilot soon made a grave announcement, “We are having some difficulties, ” he said. “At this time, it appears that our hydraulic system(液压系统)has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando airport at this time. Because of the lack of hydraulics, we are not sure whether our landing gear(起落架)will lock, so the flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are dumping fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a rough landing. ”
In other words, we were about to crash. No sight has ever been so alarming as that fuel, hundreds of gallons of it, streaming past my window out of the plane's tanks. The flight attendants helped people get into position andcomforted those who were already desperate.
As I looked at the faces of my fellow business travelers, I was stunned by their facial expressions. Many looked visibly frightened. Actually, their faces looked gray in color, something I'd never seen before. No one faces death without fear. I thought. All around, people cried, wailed and screamed.

The past two weeks have witnessed the smooth process of our cloud exchange project and the growth of ourfriendship. What impressed us most were the talent shows, where we each displayed extraordinary versatility and unique culture. Despite the short time, we've harvested a giant leap in both language and cultural interaction.

    Possible Version:
Para 1: Suddenly, in the midst of all the chaos, a woman's calm voice caught my attention. The woman, withunremarkable looking, was staring full into the face of her daughter. The kid listened closely, sensing the importance of her mother's words. Seemingly she was untouched by the sounds of grief and fear around her. I strained to hearwhat this mother was telling her child. Over and over again, the mother said, “I love you so much. And remember, no matter what happens, I love you always. ” Then the mother put her body over her daughter's, strapped the seat belt over both of them and prepared to crash.
Para 2: Seconds later, our landing gear held for no earthly reason. We survived! All the travelers and attendants cheered, some even burst into tears. And that calm mother, held her daughter tightly with tears brimmed in her eyes. I let out a deep sigh, “what a narrow escape!” Though this experience passed many years, the voice I heard that day which never wavered, never acknowledged doubt was engraved in my mind. That mom showed me what a real hero looks like. And for those few minutes, I heard the voice of courage.

W: No. I hurt my knee when I was skiing last month.
M: When I hurt my arm, the doctor said that I could still play baseball.
W: Yes, but I just want to rest my knee to make sure it recovers soon(5).
    Text 6
W: I'd never heard of this creature. Its skin seems to be made up of hard pieces.
M: Some think those pieces can be used as medicine, so they kill them.
    W: Does the medicine work?
M: No, actually it is of no use(6)—but that doesn't stop them.
W: Is no one protecting the creatures?
M: The government does all they can. The hunters' behaviour is illegal, but the ones to blame most are the people who buy this so-called medicine(7). They know nothing and are killing the creatures indirectly.
    Text 7
W: Mr. Smith, our manager Mike is urging for the contract.
    M: It is here. It just arrived at 9: 00 a. m.
W: That was two hours ago(8)! You should have delivered it to me earlier.
M: Nobody told me what to do with it.
W: Sorry. Can you give it straight to Mike?
M: Fine. I happened to hear Mike shouting at one of the employees just now.
W: He was just under great stress. Usually we build houses or office buildings, but landing this contract to build a bridge is a big deal for us(9).
    Text 8
W: How are you enjoying China so far, Tom?
M: Not bad. And it's very generous of you to let me stay with your family(11).
W: You are welcome. After all, we are working in the same department(10). I am sorry your apartment was not ready for you. I think they had a problem with the water supply.
M: That's OK. Your parents are so kind. It is really a unique experience for me to stay at your home.
W: I'm so glad you think so. Tomorrow when we don't have to go to the office, I will give you a tour of the city(10).
M: That's great. I worked out in the park this morning. The air was so fresh and the birds twittered merrily and most astonishing, many people danced together. I loved that. It would never happen in England(12).
    W: Why not?
    M: I suppose we're too shy.
    Text 9
W: I love the colors of autumn. All the leaves tum orange and yellow and red.
M: Yes, I got a great photo yesterday(13). 850 people liked it(14)and nearly 650 people shared it. Docs that mean I'm famous on social media?
W: I'm afraid not. According to a recent study, you still need to get 150 more likes to be considered a celebrity.
    M: What a pity!
W: Is that mainly why you take pictures?
M: What? No, no, I just like to share them, so my friends and family can see them(15). If other people like them, that's a bonus.
W: Have you ever thought about doing it professionally?(13)
M: No, but I have submitted some pictures to competitions and won.
W: That's amazing. You have a really good eye. I can't wait to see what you shoot in winter when it snows.
M: I'll probably get a cold. Last year I took lots of night photos but was very ill.
W: Sounds like you should purchase a warm hat then(16).
M: Thankfully my birthday is in November, so I'll add it to my list.
