    第二部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分50分)
    第一节 (共15小题;每小题2. 5分,满分37. 5分)
    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
    A
Humans sweat to keep cool. But did you know that besides them, only a small percentage of the world’s animals keep cool by sweating? In fact, animals have a variety of ways to beat the cruel heat, some of which you might say are even a little bit strange.
    Giraffes
We know that giraffes live in a particularly dry, hot environment, but they don’t sweat. How do they stay cool? The answer lies in their beautiful skin pattern, which is like a large network with a very complex vascular (血管) system under each patch (斑块). A giraffe’s special blood flow can force heat out of its body. Because of their rather large skin surface, this is a more-than-effective way to escape the heat.
    Elephants
As the largest land animal on earth, elephants rely on their huge pair of ears. Simply by tapping their ears, elephants can lower their body temperature by 120℃ or more. Moreover, elephants often open their ears when facing the wind to reach this cooling effect.
    Dogs
The dog’s way of escaping the heat is probably the most common in our daily lives--sticking their tongues out. By breathing heavily, dogs quickly force the heat from their body and breathe cooler air in, which enters their lungs and cools their entire body.
    Koalas
Koalas are well-known for their “laziness”, so it’s natural to see one lying on a branch and think it’s just being its lazy self, but that’s not the case. Researchers say that the koalas select their trees very carefully, looking in hot weather for tree bark that is cooler than the air temperature. By getting into the cool surface of the bark, koalas can stay relatively comfortable during Australia’s powerful heat waves.
    21. How do dogs beat the heat?
    A. By choosing the suitable tree skin. B. By putting their tongues out.
    C. By moving their ears. D. By flowing blood.
    22. Which of the following animals uses their habitats to cool?
    A. Giraffe. B. Elephants. C. Dogs. D. Koalas.
    23. What do four animals have in common?
    A. They live lazily. B. They don’t sweat.
    C. They don’t stay cool. D. They live comfortably.

    B
I’d been asked to go to an editor’s office with the old program “We have a story we think you’d be perfect for”. Here was the topic: We want you to write about how middle-aged men have no friends. Seeing that, I couldn’t help thinking, “Excuse me? I have plenty of friends.” Then the editor told me there were all sorts of evidence out there to show how men, as they age, let their close friendships go, and that the fact can cause all sorts of problems and have a terrible impact on their health.
As I walked back to my desk in the newsroom--a distance of maybe 100 yards--I quickly search for my friend list. First of all, there was my friend Mark. Wait, how often do we actually hang out? Maybe four or five times a year? And then there was another best friend from high school, Rory, and. . . I actually could not remember the last time I’d seen him.
There were all those other good friends who seemed as if they’re still in my life because we follow one another via social media, but as I ran down the list of those I considered real, true, lifelong friends, I realized that it had been years since I saw many of them, even decades for a few.
By the time I got back to my desk, I realized that I was indeed perfect for this story, not because I was unusual in any way, but because my story was very, very typical. And as I looked into what that means, I realized that in the long term, I was heading down a path that was very, very dangerous. And I knew I needed a change.
    24. What was the author’s first reaction to the topic?
    A. He thought it was perfect for him. B. He knew the editor was joking.
    C. He felt surprised and doubtful. D. He showed an interest in it.
    25. Why did the editor choose this topic?
    A. To solve health problems. B. To change a dangerous path.
    C. To attach importance to friendship. D. To prove the author’s writing ability.
    26. What did the author reflect on after walking back to the newsroom?
    A. He realized the topic worth writing. B. He wasn’t popular with others.
    C. He had close friends in his life. D. He didn’t make any true friends.
    27. How did the author keep friendship with his friends?
    A. Through letters. B. Through the Internet.
    C. By phoning each other. D. By partying regularly.

    C
Many people dream of going into space, but until recently only professional astronauts had that privilege. That all changed in 2022, with successful first missions for several space tourism companies.
First off the runway, in early July, was Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic company. Its spaceship, called VSS Unity, took four passengers and two pilots on a trip to the edge of space, where they experienced weightlessness and saw the Earth from above.
Unity has a fully reusable design--it is carried to a height of 9. 5 miles under a larger “mothership” plane called Eve. It is then released before firing its own rockets to reach its maximum height of 53 miles. As it begins to fall, its wings turn around so that it floats down slowly like a shuttlecock (羽毛球), before levelling out and flying back to land like a normal aeroplane. Virgin Galactic hopes to begin regular flights in 2023.
Less than two weeks later, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s New Shepard rocket made its first flight, launching a space capsule with four passengers to an altitude of 66 miles. Among those on board were Bezos himself and 82-year-old Wally Funk, a pioneering female pilot who trained for NASA’s Mercury programme in the early 1960s but had waited 60 years for her chance to go into space. Funk became the oldest person to fly in space but only held that record until October, when 90-year-old actor William Shatner flew on the second New Shepard launch. Shatner played Captain Kirk in the Star Trek TV series and films.
In September, the Inspiration 4 mission carried four ordinary people into orbit around Earth. The launch was the first private passenger flight for Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, using a Dragon spacecraft that is also used for NASA missions. Designed to raise awareness and funds for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, US, the mission was paid for by billionaire Jared Isaacman. He was joined on the three-day flight by medical researcher Hayley Arceneaux, competition winner Dr Sian Proctor and hospital supporter ChrisSembroski.

    28. What can we know about VSS Unity?
    A. It can be used several times. B. It has started normal flights.
    C. It takes off from the ground. D. It touches down like a shuttlecock.
    29. What does “it” refer to in Paragraph3?
    A. Eve. B. a shuttlecock. C. an aeroplane. D. Unity.
    30. Who is the latest person to go into space according to the passage?
    A. Hayley Arceneaux. B. William Shatner. C. Jeff Bezos. D. Wally Funk.
    31. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
    A. New spacecrafts will weigh increasingly light.
    B. Old people are more suitable to have space travel.
    C. Ordinary people can go into space in the near future.
    D. Space travel missions can meet the demand for hospitals.

    D
If you were to throw, say, a banana peel out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it’s part of a fruit--right? Actually, no. A banana peel can take up two years to decompose(分解), and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of waste banana peels, or much worse. An orange peel and a cigarette butt has a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminum (铝) cans last up to100 years; and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles and plastic bags.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment, we can’t only measure the severity (严重) of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading span, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is thrown in the UK every day. Similarly, our regular littering here and there has caused the UK’s mouse population to increase by 60 million. This suddenly isn’t so mysterious when you consider that since the 1960s our annual littering has increased by an astonishing 500 percent.
It’s not a cheap habit either: UK taxpayers spent £500 million on keeping the streets clean. So, it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping, you could face a £20, 000 fine. Regardless of how severe the punishment might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2, 000 were punished out of 825, 000, so we still have some way to go in making sure people obey the rules.
To take back our beautiful cities, we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be. We need to care more about the world around us.
    32. Which of the following is the easiest to decompose in the passage?
    A. A glass bottle. B. A plastic bag. C. An aluminum can. D. An orange peel. 33. What can we know from paragraph 2?
    A. Annual littering has increased a little in the UK since the 1960s.
    B. Shorter-lasting materials will be less harmful to the environment.
    C. Cigarette-related littering is a severe environmental problem in the UK.
    D. Regular littering has caused the UK’s mouse population to reach 60 million.
    34. Which of the following can best describe the UK’s punishment on littering?
    A. Every little helps. B. More haste, less speed.
    C. No pain, no gain. D. A drop in the bucket.
    35. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. Littering, a Surprisingly Big Issue
    B. Environment Issues, a Big Concern
    C. Rubbish Collection, an Urgent Task
    D. Long-lasting Material, a Hidden Danger

    第二节 (满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Mommy, don’t go,” my three-year-old son screamed as I walked to the door. My fifteen-year-old leaned against the kitchen counter with his arms folded across his chest, not screaming, but glaring at me as I pulled his little brother off my legs.
“Are you mad at me too?”
“You spend all your time taking care of other people’s kids, but what about us?” Dylan left angrily.
I was shocked and a little hurt. How could my own child not understand that the work I was doing was saving lives? Then the answer hit me. He didn’t know, because he had never seen what Healing the Children actually did. Dylan had heard the stories of sick children, but had never once looked into the eyes of a child and understood the hard truth--that without our help, the children would likely die.
“Get dressed. You are going with me,” I said.
I spent the drive explaining the case of Hector to my son, who pretended to ignore me the entire time. “He’s seven, only weighs thirty pounds and is very sick. He has a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, which could kill him. It is a miracle (奇迹) that he is still alive.”
I went on to explain that it took a team of volunteer medical staff to get Hector to the hospital from his remote village and care for him while he was there. Still, Dylan seemed unimpressed.
We stopped at a convenience store for water and snacks. Dylan had one large and one small Slurpee (思乐冰饮料). He said the small one was for Hector. I doubted whether the little guy would be able to drink it, but remained silent. This was the first interest Dylan had shown in being there. I wasn’t about to ruin it.
I stopped at the nurses’ station to check on Hector’s progress while Dylan went to his room. Our patient was recovering physically, but the nurse was concerned that Hector was struggling emotionally. She said, “Kids usually bounce back fast, but he hardly speaks and never smiles.”

    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Imagine my surprise when I heard laughter from Hector’s room.

    第一节:书面表达(满分15分)
    Dear Smith,
Knowing that you are interested in a traditional Chinese festival----the Dragon Boat Festival, I am writing to introduce it to you.
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on May 5th of the lunar calendar in honor of one great patriotic poet Qu Yuan. On that day, we Chinese often eat zongzi and drink a special wine. Besides, what should be stressed is the dragon-boat race, which is very interesting and exciting. People gather on both sides of the river to watch the participators spare no effort to make for the finishing line.
I hope you will find my introduction helpful and attractive. Looking forward to your reply.

    第二节(满分25分)
Imagine my surprise when I heard laughter from Hector’s room. I entered and found Dylan sitting on the edge of Hector’s bed wiping pieces of frozen drink from Hector’s mouth. Both boys were giggling and Hector was apparently enjoying the company. I spent the rest of the day speaking to doctors and watching my son playing with the special little boy. It was truly amazing to watch them interact, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Perhaps to the two of them it was.
On the way home that night, Dylan asked me several times whether Hector would be okay. I told him this boy would get well but he had a hard road ahead of him. My son seemed to be lost in thought for a while. Then he declared his decision to join Healing the Children as a volunteer to help Hector and other children. I never thought that a moody teenager would take up the voluntary work and never again complain about his mother’s crazy work schedule.

    Text 1
M: Oh, no! Look at what happened to my phone! The screen won’t even turn on. It must be from the rain. (1)
W: I heard there is a way to dry it out. Separate the battery and the phone and drop them in a bag of rice.
    Text 2
M: That’s the fire alarm. Everybody needs to get out of the office.
W: It’s a false alarm. The fan has set off the alarm again.
M: You could be right but safety must come first. Please leave the building. (2)
    ★set off:使(警报)响起,拉响(警报)
The fan has set off the alarm again.
    电扇又让警报响起了。
    Text 3
W: How many people are coming to dinner tonight?
M: The twins will be here, as well as you and me of course. (3)I hope that’s OK with you.
    Text 4
W: I’m so tired today. My power went out last night during the storm, and I couldn’t figure out how to fix it.
M: That seems like an annoying task. Did you stay up trying to find out what the problem was?
W: No. It was just too hot to sleep after that. (4)
    Text 5
M: How can you tell which ones are fresh?
W: Give them a little press. If they are too soft, put them back. It’s OK if they are a bit firm. (5) We’ll just leave them on the counter for a couple of days.
    Text 6
M: Garden Hotel. Can I help you?
W: My name is Vicky Clark. I saw your advertisement in the newspaper. Can you tell me about the job, please? (6)
M: We need people working in the kitchen, washing up, and clearing tables. What jobs have you done before?
W: I’ve worked in a restaurant. But I’m a student, so I can only work on weekends. (6)
M: That’s not a problem. Can you come here at 2:00 this afternoon to meet the manager? (7)
    W: I’m sorry. I have class from 2:00 to 3:00, (7) but I can come afterwards at 3:30.
    M: That’s fine.
    Text 7
M: My parents want me to go to a family party this weekend. I know it’s going to be so boring. It always is.
W: Don’t say that. You should be happy to spend time with your family. My family live across the country, so I don’t get to see them often. It’s a bit depressing. (8)
M: Really? I’m sorry to hear that. Do you see them at least once a year, for birthdays or maybe a marriage in the family?
W: I saw them on Christmas this past year. (9) That’s usually when we get together. I would love to go more often, but California is far away.
M: I imagine it is a long ride across the country. Plus, you would have to take the time off from school and work.
W: Actually, it’s more of the cost that keeps me from going often.
    Text 8
M: I think we should speak to our new neighbors about the noise. (10)
W: I agree. I had hoped it would calm down but they have been here for over a month now.
M: I know it must be hard for them with a young child.
W: It’s not just the boy. They have three dogs in that tiny apartment. (11)
M: Yes, and they bark a lot during the day. They could take them to the park. There’s lots of space.
W: Should we ask the other residents what they think?
M: I’m pretty sure everyone will think the same as us.
W: Then should we go over there just now and knock on their door?
M: Why don’t we write them a letter instead? (12)
    W: That’s a good idea.
    Text 9
W: Ronald, (14) (15) (16) it is lovely that you agreed to come and do this for me.
M: Don’t worry about it one bit. You’ll do great. This little interview is nothing, compared to setting up this beautiful museum. (13)
W: Thank you. Who would you say is your biggest hero?
M: Well, you already know the answer to that, Kristal. My adviser was Ansel Adams, the great nature photographer.
W: And where did you meet Ansel? (14)
M: Well, it’s an odd story actually. I was with my friends in the summer and they wanted to go fishing that day. I told them I would rather walk through the woods, so I hiked a mountain to relax alone, and ran into Ansel at the top. (14)
W: Let me guess. He was taking pictures of the rocks?
M: Almost. He was taking pictures of a special cloud. Immediately, he began telling me everything a person could know about clouds. He was a wealth of information. He invited me back to his photography studio after.
W: And was that the moment you wanted to learn from him? (15)
M: No. I decided that after he took me to his favorite spot. (15) The amount of knowledge that Ansel had was important to me. However, it was the pure joy and love for teaching and appreciating photography that got me. (15)
W: And now you own your own studio, you design clothing and will soon have a permanent section here at the modern museum of art and technology. (13) (16)
    Text 10 (第20题为总结题)
The United Kingdom is a group of islands off the coast of Europe — but it hasn’t always been that way. Many thousands of years ago, the UK was attached to Europe by a stretch of land known as Doggerland. And the evidence of the people who lived there is regularly found. Roughly 12,000 years ago, as the last major ice age was ending, the area that is now the North Sea was very different. Instead of water, the area had hills, wetlands and valleys full of trees. Stone Age people lived in Doggerland. They were hunter-gatherers who moved with the seasons and lived by fishing, hunting, and gathering food such as nuts and berries. (17)Over time, they were slowly flooded out of their hunting grounds. Water which had been locked away in ice began to melt, drowning Doggerland. Around 6000 years ago, people were forced onto higher ground in what are today’s England and the Netherlands. The evidence of the ancient people’s presence can be found on the sea floor, where modern fishermen often find bones and tools that date back to about 9000 years ago. (18) Those studying Doggerland say the climate change faced by ancient people is similar to that we have now. (19) They say that a similar situation could affect the billions of people who live within 60 kilometers of a sea shore today if polar ice caps continue to melt at a rapid pace.
