The meat­eating marsupials (有袋动物) died ut n mainland Australia a few thusand years ag, but survived in Tasmania, an island f sutheast Australia separated frm the mainland, until the 1930s. Until then, scientists had believed the cause f this mainland extinctin (灭绝) was increased activity frm native Australians and dinges (Australian wild dgs)．
Scientists behind the University f Adelaide study, which was published in the Jurnal f Bigegraphy n Thursday, cllected 51 new thylacine DNA samples frm fssil bnes and museum skins — the largest data set f thylacine DNA t date. The paper cncluded that climate change starting abut 4,000 years ag — in particular drier seasns caused by the weather systems
knwn as El Niñ — Suthern Oscillatin (南方涛动) — was likely the main cause f the mainland extinctin.
The ancient DNA shwed that the mainland extinctin f thylacines was rapid, and nt the result f lss f genetic diversity. There was als evidence f a ppulatin crash in thylacines in Tasmania at the same perid f time, reducing their numbers and genetic diversity.
Assciate Prfessr Jeremy Austin said Tasmania wuld have been prtected frm mainland Australia's warmer, drier climate due t its higher rainfall. He argued that climate change was “the nly thing that culd have caused, r at least started, an extinctin n the mainland and caused a ppulatin crash in Tasmania.”
“They bth happened at abut the same time, and the ther tw things that had been talked abut in the past that may have driven thylacines t extinctin n the mainland were dinges and humans. S the nly explanatin left is climate change. And because the ppulatin crash happened at the same time and the species went extinct n the mainland, ur argument is that there's a cmmn theme there and the nly cmmn theme is that there is this change in climate.”
