After 195 countries in two years, one traveler has become the first black woman to visit every country in the world. Jessica Nabongo ended her journey in the Seychelles, off the coast of East Africa-just as she said she would be on "Good Morning, America" back in March. Friends and family joined her in the Seychelles to celebrate the incredible achievement.

Nabongo was born and raised in Detroit by Ugandan-immigrant parents. She has been traveling internationally since she was four. In addition to her U. S. passport, Nabongo carries a Ugandan passport, which helped her gain access to different nations around the world.

The idea to visit every country on earth came to her in February 2017.At that point, she had visited about 60 countries. But Nahango didn't tell anyone her plan, at least not at first. Nabango did some research and discovered that she could become the first black woman to visit every country. "I didn't want anyone to beat me to it," she said.

Nabongo had been writing a travel blog since 2009, before social media was so prevalent, as a way to keep family and friends updated. Today, she documents much of her travel on Instagram, where she has almost 200 000 followers who have watched her journey around the world.

What makes it to her Instagram is just a part of her life. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes. Seasoned traveler as she was, she got ripped off(被敲诈)during her journey when exchanging her money for the local currency. More often than not, though, people tried to he helpful, especially when Nahongo would tell them what she was trying to accomplish.

Through her travels, Nabongo broke down harriers about many countries, particularly those that people are afraid to visit, and highlighted(突出)the countries that are often unseen and overlooked.

    24. What can we learn about Jessica Nabongo?

    A. She was born in Uganda.                B. She used to be a broadcaster.

    C. She made history in touring the world.     D. She started her journey from East Africa.

    25. What benefited Jessica Nabongo a lot during her journey?

    A. Holding American citizenship.      B. Having many loyal followers.

    C. Owning two different passports.     D. Getting support from the government.

    26. What does the underlined word "prevalent" in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A. Commercial.     B. Widespread.     C. Promising.     D. Addictive.

    27. What does the author imply by giving examples in Paragraph 5?

    A. Learning a foreign language is a necessity.

    B. The residents were unfriendly to tourists.

    C. Photos on the social media are misleading.

    D. The journey was a mixture of joy and bitterness.

    C

Eating too much fat and sugar as a child can change your microbiome(微生物群)for life, even if you later learn to eat healthier, a new study in mice suggests.

The study by UCR researchers is one of the first to show a significant decrease in the total number and diversity of gut(肠道)bacteria in mature mice fed an unhealthy diet when they are young.

The researchers divided their mice into four groups: half fed the standard "healthy" diet, half fed the less healthy "Western" diet, half with access to a running wheel for exercise, and half without. After three weeks spent on these diets, all mice were returned to a standard diet and no exercise, which is normally how mice are kept in a laboratory. At the 14-week mark, the team examined the diversity and abundance of bacteria in the animals.

They found that the quantity of bacteria such as Muribaculum intestinale was significantly reduced in the Western diet group. This type of bacteria is involved in carbohydrate metabolism (碳水化合物代谢). Analysis also showed that the gut bacteria are sensitive to the amount of exercise the mice got. Muribaculum bacteria increased in mice fed a standard diet who had access to a running wheel and decreased in mice on a high-fat diet whether they had exercise or not. Researchers believe this species of bacteria, and the family of bacteria that it belongs to, might influence the amount of energy available to its host.

One other effect of note was the increase in a highly similar bacteria species that were enriched after five weeks of treadmill training in a study by other researchers, suggesting that exercise alone may increase its presence.

Overall, the UCR researchers found that early-life Western diet had more long-lasting effects on the microhiome than early-life exercise did. The takeaway, Garland said, is essentially, "You are not only what you eat, but what you ate as a child!"

    28. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

    A. Mice used in the study are unhealthy.

    B. Improper diets lead to the decline in gut bacteria.

    C. Mice have fewer gut bacteria as they grow older.

    D. Diversity of gut bacteria varies from mouse to mouse.

    29. How did the researchers carry out the study?

    A. They fed some mice unhealthy food all the time.

    B. They trained the mice in the laboratory as normal.

    C. They compared the findings with those of previous projects.

    D. They analyzed the data after treating the mice differently.

    30. What conclusion can we draw from the study?

    A. Children deserve the most delicious food.     B. Early-life healthy diets count more.

    C. Early-life exercise has a permanent influence.  D. Western food should be rejected completely.

    31. What is the best title of the text?

    A. More Exercise Makes a Man Healthy     B. Ways to Maintain Your Microbiome

    C. You Are What You Ate as a Child        D. The Better Diets, the Less Stressful Lifestyles

    D

Vacationers relaxing on the beach might feel calm by the rhythmic sound of the waves lapping up against the shore. It turns out the feeling is not the same for the fishes who have to listen to us, however.

An article published in the journal Science on Thursday details how anthropogenic ocean noise-that is, noise in the ocean caused by human activities-is doing severe damage to our marine(海洋的)ecosystems. It's difficult to think of a type of creature that has not been impacted: the creatures like whales and dolphins struggling to communicate with their singing and clicking(respectively)and numerous species of fish presenting signs of stress.

Oceans have become increasingly noisier since the Industrial Revolution. Shipping, constructing and resource exploration have increased the sounds generated by human activities, whereas the sounds of biological origin have been reduced by hunting, fishing, and habitat destruction. Existing evidence shows that anthrophony affects marine animals at multiple levels, including their behavior and, in extreme cases, survival.

The good news here is that the problem is solvable. "Compared with other stressors that are persistent in the environment, such as carbon dioxide sent out to the atmosphere or persistent organic pollutants delivered to marine ecosystems, anthropogenic noise is typically a point-source pollutant, the effects of which decline quickly once sources are removed," the authors wrote. "The evidence summarized here encourages national and international policies to become more ambitious in regulating and deploying(部署)existing technological solutions to reduce marine noise to maintain a healthy ocean."

This is not the only recent study to emphasize the destructive impact that humans are having on the ocean. In September Science reported that the pandemic(流行病)had caused a sudden increase in plastic pollution in the ocean, due to everything from an increase in personal protection equipment and medical waste to the fact that it is cheaper to manufacture new plastic products than recycle existing ones.

    32. How does ocean noise from human activities affect whales?

    A. It makes them living in a state of fear.

    B. It leaves them under great stress.

    C. It makes them barely hear companions' sound.

    D. It makes them hard to recognize the direction.

    33. Which of the followings contributes to the ocean noise?

    A. Cultural communication.     B. Habitat destruction.

    C. Climate variation.           D. Industrial Revolution.

    34. Why is the problem of ocean noise from human activities solvable?

    A. The source is relatively easy to find and control.

    B. Practical and relevant policies are worked out.

    C. The government has the ambition to solve it.

    D. There exists advanced technology at present.

    35. What's the function of the last paragraph?

    A. To blame people for their misbehavior.

    B. To stress the ocean pollution is rather serious.

    C. To emphasize plastic pollution is more difficult to remove.

    D. To note medical waste is harmful to the environment.

    第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Quit smoking. Avoid the junk food. Stop being a couch potato. Don't stay up too late. All of that sounds simple enough, but simple doesn't always mean easy. You'll need a good plan to break some of those had habits.

36   Knowing you need to change something usually isn't enough motivation to do it. You should think there's a good reason you do it. For example, eating together is a way to bond with friends and family, so you may go along with the crowd instead of choosing to eat alone.

Set small goals. Instead of not eating sweets, have fewer snacks each day. If you want to be more active, take a short walk after dinner each night. If you can't sleep, set an alarm to remind you to turn off the TV, phone, or computer an hour before you want to go to bed.   37

Swap bad for good. It's important to replace bad habits with good ones.   38   For example, people who quit smoking sometimes replace it with snacking. Having healthy choices around, like fruit, can help keep that from becoming a problem.

Track your progress.   39   If you haven't met your goals for the week, think about what went wrong and then see what you might do better next week. If you've met your goals, give yourself a little reward.

Forgive yourself. Difficulties are normal.   40   Think hack to when you first started, look at your daily record, and remind yourself of how far you've come. One fall doesn't wipe all that out. Then pick up where you left off.

    A. Think about it.

    B. Know about yourself.

    C. Small wins can keep you going.

    D. Be a simple man with a simple goal.

    E. Don't beat yourself up when you have one.

    F. Keep a daily record of the changes you make.

    G. Otherwise, you're likely to fall back into your old routines.
