The Ig Nobel Prize, a spoof (滑稽模仿)of the actual Nobel Prize, exists to award the 10 strangest
research projects of the year that bring you fun and make you think. The following are three of them in 2019.
    Medicine Prize: Pizza
It’s one of the world’s most popular foods. According to the Ig Nobel Medicine Prize winner, eating more pizzas can lower the risk of cancer and heart disease — if your pizza is loaded with fruits and veggies. These provide flavonoids (类黄酮)to fight against certain diseases. So, if you’re a pizza enthusiast, you now have one more reason to love it!
    Economics Prize: Dirty Money
Paper money, the most frequently passed items on the planet, is known to pick up all kinds of bacteria. Which country’s currency is the dirtiest? An international team compared seven countries’ paper money. The Romanian Leu was the only one to carry all three types of bacteria tested. And the US Dollar was also a finalist. Perhaps this will make cashless payments more popular.
    Biology Prize: Cockroach
Cockroaches (蟑螂) are well known for their survival abilities, but few folks know they can sense magnetic fields. More surprisingly, an international team found that dead cockroaches have more magnetic properties (磁'性)than live ones. That’s because magnetic properties decrease when the temperature gets higher. So if you can stand cockroaches, they may be good magnetic sensors (传感器).
    21. What do the three prizes have in common?
    A. They are beneficial to our health. B. They are entertaining and unusual.
    C. They’ve gained the recognition of the Nobel Prize. D. They are stranger than any other project in previous years.
    22. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. People with heart disease should eat more pizzas.
    B. US Dollar is relatively dirtier than Romanian Leu.
    C. Dirty paper money leads to cashless payments
    D. Dead cockroaches are better magnetic sensors than live ones.
23.In which column can you find this passage in a newspaper?
    A. Discovery. B. Sports. C. Health. D. Business.
    B
When her grandmother’s health began to worsen last autumn, Mary would make the drive from Washington, DC to Winchester, VA every few days.
She hated highway driving, finding it ugly and boring. She preferred to take winding country roads to her grandmother’s hospital. When she drove through the rocky town of Harpers Ferry, the beauty of the rough waters was always appealing to her.
Toward the end of her journey, Mary had to get on highway 81. It was here that she discovered a surprising bit of beauty during one of her trips. Along the shoulder of the highway, there was a long stretch of wild flowers. They were thin and delicate and purple, and moved back and forth in the wind as if whispering poems to each other.
The first time she saw the flowers, Mary was seized by an uncontrollable urge to pull over on the highway and pull a bunch from the soil. She carried them into her grandmother’s room when she arrived at the hospital and placed them in a vase by her bed.
For a moment her grandmother seemed more lucid (清醒的)than usual. She thanked Mary for the flowers, commented on their beauty and asked where she had gotten them. Mary was overjoyed by the ability of the flowers to wake something up inside her sick grandmother.
Afterwards, Mary began carrying scissors in the car during her trips to visit her grandmother. She would quickly glide onto the shoulder, jump out of the car, and clip a bunch of flowers. Each time Mary placed the flowers in the vase, her grandmother’s eyes would light up and they would have a splendid conversation.
One morning in late October, Mary got a call that her grandmother had taken a turn for the worse. Mary was in such a hurry to get to her grandmother that she sped past her flower spot. She decided to turn around, head several miles back, and cut a bunch.
Mary arrived at the hospital to find her grandmother very weak and unresponsive. She placed the flowers in the vase and sat down to hold her grandmother’s hand. She felt a squeeze on her fingers. It was the last conversation they had.
24.Why did Mary prefer to take country roads to the hospital?
    A. To get on highway 81 more easily. B. To enjoy the natural view along the roads.
    C. To pick wild flowers for her grandmother. D. To spend less time driving to the destination.
25.When Mary placed the flowers by her grandmother’s bed, her grandmother______.
    A. was overjoyed by the flowers B. commented on Mary’s beauty
    C. came alive at the sight of the flowers D. was curious about the type of the flowers
26.What do we know from the passage?
    A. Mary discovered the wild flowers along the country roads.
    B. Mary’s last conversation with her grandmother was a silent one.
    C. Mary headed several miles back because she sped past the hospital.
    D. Mary’s grandmother had passed away before she arrived at the hospital.
    27. What does the passage convey to us?
    A. Beauty in nature can be powerful. B. Love has no beginning or ending.
    C. Life is as beautiful as summer flowers. D. Flowers have the magic to cure diseases.
    C
Close to the North Pole, remote and rocky Plateau Mountain in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard seems an unlikely spot for any global effort to safeguard agriculture. In this cold and deserted environment, no grains, no gardens, no trees can grow. Yet at the end of a 130-meter-long tunnel cut out of solid stone is a room filled with humanity’s most precious treasure, the largest and most diverse seed collection—more than a half-billion seeds.
A quiet rescue mission is under way. With growing evidence that unchecked climate change will seriously affect food production and threaten the diversity of crops around the world, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault represents a major step towards ensuring the preservation of hundreds of thousands of crop varieties. This is a seed collection, but more importantly, it is a collection of the traits found within the seeds: the genes that give one variety resistance to a particular pest and another variety tolerance for hot, dry weather.
Few people will ever see or come into contact with the contents of this vault. In sealed boxes, behind multiple locked doors, monitored by electronic security systems, enveloped in below-zero temperatures, and surrounded by tons of rock, hundreds of millions of seeds are protected in their mountain fortress. Frozen in such conditions inside the mountain, seeds of most major crops will remain viable for hundreds of years, or longer. Seeds of some are capable of retaining their ability to grow for thousands of years.
Everyone can look back now and say that the Seed Vault was a good and obvious idea, and that of course the Norwegian government should have approved and funded it. But back in 2004, when the Seed Vault was proposed, it was viewed as a crazy, impractical, and expensive idea.
We knew that nothing would provide a definite guarantee. But we were tired, fed up, and frankly scared of the steady, greater losses of crop diversity. The Seed Vault was built by optimists who wanted to do something to preserve options so that humanity and its crops might be better prepared for change. If it simply resupplied seed gene banks with samples those gene banks had lost, this would repay our efforts.
The Seed Vault is about hope and commitment——about what can be done if countries come together and work cooperatively to accomplish something significant, long-lasting, and worthy of who we are and wish to be.
28.What is the Seed Vault according to the passage?
    A. It’s a tunnel where the collected seeds are displayed.
    B. It’s a stone room that contains the seeds of endangered crops.
    C. It’s a seed gene bank that stores diverse seeds for future agriculture.
    D. It’s a lab where researchers study how to maintain the diversity of crops.
29.What does the underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 3 probably means?
    A. Mature. B. Alive. C. Clean. D. Valuable.
    30. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tells us?
    A. How the seeds are preserved. B. Where people keep the seeds.
    C. Why the seeds are protected. D. What people do to study the seeds.
    31. We can know from the passage that_______.
    A. the Seed Vault offers a solution to climate change.
    B. most countries took part in rescuing the seed varieties.
    C. the Seed Vault guarantees to prevent the loss of crop diversity.
    D. many people originally considered building the Seed Vault unwise.
    D
Every day is Earth Day — probably you’ve heard it before. Nearly all Americans have access to a plastic recycling program. You may be surprised to learn how many types of plastic packaging can be recycled into new, useful products!
Ford Motor Company has been helping to promote the use of environmentally-friendly auto parts —and one way they’re doing that is by using recycled plastic bottles for underbody shields (底盘保护罩)and other auto parts on cars.
“The underbody shield is a large part, and for a part that big, if we use solid plastic, it would likely weigh three times as much,” said Thomas Sweder, a design engineer of Ford Motor Company. “We look for the most durable and highest performing materials to work with to make our parts, and in this case, we are also creating many environmental benefits.”
In the past decade, the global use of plastics in vehicle parts has grown quickly. Ford alone uses about 1.2 billion recycled plastic bottles per year, about 250 bottles per vehicle on average.
When plastic bottles are thrown into a recycling bin, they are collected with thousands of others and cut into small pieces. These pieces are typically sold to suppliers who turn them into fibers, by
melting and pressing them. Then they are mixed together with other various types of fiber in a process and used to make a sheet of material which is formed into the auto parts.
Due to its light weight, recycled plastic is ideal for the manufacturing of underbody shields. These shields reportedly also help create a significantly quieter environment on the new 2020 Ford Escape.
This is not the only way that Ford has been committed to environmental protection; the automotive company recently partnered with McDonald’s coffee suppliers to recycle all of their coffee roasting biowaste into headlights.
“Ford is among the leaders when it comes to using recycled materials such as this,” Sweder said. “This material meets all of our requirements for durability and performance.”
    32. Why does Ford choose recycled plastic as environmentally-friendly materials for vehicle parts?
    A. Because it’s new and useful. B. Because it’s cheap and easy to get.
    C. Because it’s durable and light. D. Because it’s portable and well-performed.
33.What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
    A. The global use of plastics. B. The mixing process of fibers.
    C. The advantages of plastic bottles. D. The formation of the new auto material.
34.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 7 refer to?
    A. Recycling coffee roasting biowaste. B. Improving vehicle parts.
    C. Recycling plastic bottles into auto parts. D. Creating a quieter environment.
    35. What can be the best title of the passage?
    A. Every Day is Earth Day. B. Ford Takes the Lead in Plastic Recycling.
    C. Ecological Auto Underbody Shields. D. A Pioneer in Promoting Environmental Protection.

    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
New Year’s resolutions you should be making about time management
You likely already have too many goals and too many disappointments from this past year. So as you look ahead to 2020,the idea of adding more seems kind of exciting but also a bit forbidding. That’s why as a time management coach, I recommend that you do the opposite: 36
    Know less
It’s okay not to be up-to-date on everything. To cut down on these distractions, you might turn off social media notifications on your phone. 37 Unsubscribe from notification emails or newsletters you don't read regularly.
Resolution: I resolve to be less aware of“interesting”things so I can be interested in and present for the people around me.
    Care less
This one may sound a bit unfeeling. You may want to be a kind and thoughtful person for your friends and family and to serve your clients well. 38 What that means is that you say "No" a lot.
    Here is a way:
I am at the service of my customers Monday through Friday, during the day. 39 Being able to unplug from work in my personal time increases my ability to serve my clients well when I’m in the office.
Resolution: 40 Consequently, I can match my time with my highest priorities and take better care of the people closest to me.
Is it easy to do less? No. But will it lead you to the best outcomes in the end? Yes. You’ll thank yourself for it at the end of 2020.
    A. Resolve to do less.
    B. Contact people face to face.
    C. I have to manage my time strategically.
    D. But I don’t feel the need to be available 24/7.
    E. Alternatively, you could offload the apps altogether.
    F. I resolve to care less about what others want me to do.
    G. But you can’t care about everyone who wants your attention professionally.

This particular day began at seven in the morning in Casablanca(卡萨布兰卡). My friend Mike and I were going to visit Abdel, a young man we'd worked with on a volunteer project in Kenitra,an industrial city on the Moroccan(摩洛哥)coast. He'd been expecting us to arrive in Casablanca for a few days now, and since he had no telephone, he’d written down his address and name and told us to just show up-his mother and sisters were always at home.
Apparently the address he had written down was hard for foreigners like us to understand. When we got into the neighborhood, our taxi driver started asking directions. Eventually, with the help of a policeman, we were led to a house down a winding road. Our driver went to the door and inquired. He came back saying Abdel's sister was in this house visiting friends and would come along to show us where they lived.
Soon a girl of about sixteen emerged from the house. Surprisingly, she didn't look like Abdel at all. Still I'd seen other families where children didn't look alike, so I didn't give it too much thought. She then brought us to a yard. We waited in the yard while the sister went in and returned accompanied by her mother, sisters and brother-in-law, all of whom greeted us with cautious warmth. We were shown into the living room. The mother told us in broken French that Abdel was out, but would be home soon. We sat on low, cushioned seats, drinking sweet mint tea and eating sugar cookies, while the family members sat with us and made shy, polite conversation that frequently fell into uncomfortable silence.
An hour passed, more family members emerged from inner rooms. I was again struck by the fact that none of them looked a thing like our friend.
After another two hours had passed with no sign of Abdel, the family insisted on serving us a meal in their kitchen next door. “Soon,” was the only response I got when I inquired as to what time Abdel might come back.
    注意∶续写词数应为 150 左右
Finally we heard the words we had been waiting for from the mother, “Please, Abdel is back in the living room.”

I took out the piece of paper Abdel had given me in Kenitra and showed it to the new Abdel.

    续写:
Finally we heard the words we had been waiting for from the mother, “Please, Abdel is back in the living room.” We entered the lovely living room and a young man came forward with an uncertain expression on his face. “Hello, I am Abdel.” he said cautiously. Immediately I realized there was a mistake. “I – I’m sorry, I’m afraid you are not the Abdel we are looking for,” I giggled nervously. For a split second no one said anything. Then Abdel exclaimed heartily, “It doesn’t matter at all.” After hearing our story, he asked us to show them the address.
I took out the piece of paper Abdel had given me back in Kenitra and showed it to the new Abdel. “This is Baalal Abdel!” said the second Abdel. “We went to school together! He lives less than a kilometer from here. I will bring you to his house.” After taking photos and exchanging addresses with the family, we hugged good-bye. Then the new Abdel led us to the home of our friend Abdel. There, I reached out and hugged him. All of us enjoyed what a beautiful surprise and simple kindness had opened to us: warmth, friendship and sincerity.
