Twelve-year-old Lydia Denton was recently named the winner of CITGO’s Fueling Education Student Challenge, where she earned $20,000 after creating the Beat the Heat Car Seat, which is a portable device placed in the car seat that not only senses weight over five pounds but monitors temperature when the baby is in the seat.
The soon-to-be seventh grader says she became inspired to make the invention after watching the news that babies were being left in hot cars, often by accident. “At first, I thought about raising money for the families, but that wouldn’t fix the problem: I wanted to invent something that could prevent the deaths from happening.”
Lydia’s device is started when it senses the weight of the child and the temperature setting reaches over 100 F (38℃). At that point, an alarm goes off and a warning is sent via SMS to the parents. If the parents don’t reset the device within 60 seconds, a built-in GPS chip sends a message to local authorities with the vehicle’s location. After many rounds of testing with her local 911, Lydia is proud to say that Beat the Heat Car Seat is a success.
Though many newer vehicles come with warning systems and smart seat systems, Lydia’s goal was to create a device that would reach more people and that could also transfer from car seat to car seat as the child grew. She decided to use her prize money to continue making improvements on the device, which would sell for only about $40.
Lydia is now working with an instructor who is helping her with production and teaching her about business. Lydia hopes that her work will inspire more kids of her age to make their ideas come true. “Don’t think that you have to accept things in the world. If there is something that bothers you, think of ways to make it better!” 24. Why did Lydia make the invention?
A. To win 20,000-dollar prize.
B. To raise money for unlucky families.
C. To help stop babies dying in hot cars.
D. To guarantee babies’ safety in a car crash.
25. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the device?
A. How it works. B. What it consists of.
C. Why it raises the alarm. D. How parents respond to it.
26. How will Lydia’s future device differ from other smart seat systems?
A. It will be much stronger. B. It will be more affordable.
C. It will be less problematic. D. It will be more effective on older kids.
27. What can we learn from Lydia’s story?
A. No competition, no progress.
B. It’s never too late to go into business.
C. One should be open to any suggestion.
D. Creative thinking is the key to success.

A competition making up Versailles literature was launched on Sina Weibo recently. So what is Versailles literature?
Actually, the term has nothing to do with the French palace nor with literature. It came from The Rose of Versailles, a Japanese manga series about aristocratic(贵族化的)life at the palace of Versailles in France in the late 18th century, and was coined by a Chinese influencer earlier this year. Known as humblebragging, it is a boast(吹牛)disguised as a complaint. “I have too many houses. How can I decide which one to decorate?” and “I thought I lost weight this morning. So disappointed when I realized it was because I took off the huge diamond ring my boyfriend gave me last night” are some examples of Versailles literature. The intention is to show off — usually things of materialistic values, yet one ought to pretend that’s not the point.
As the 19th century English author Jane Austen famously wrote, “ Nothing is more deceitful(欺诈的)than the appearance of humility(谦逊).” The psychology behind humblebragging is to be recognized for one’s successes and be liked by others at the same time, according to scholars. In her article titled Why do people hate humblebragging? published in Psychology Today, psychologist Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne at the University of Massachusetts Amherst noted that humblebragging is a “strategy in pursuit of respect” because it draws attention to one’s accomplishments in a circuitous way.
However, studies on social media users show that humblebragging as a self-promotion strategy does not work. In the essay Humblebragging: A distinct and ineffective self-presentation strategy, the University of North Carolina researcher Ovul Sezer and Harvard University scholars Francesca Gino and Michael Norton concluded from their research that humblebraggers are perceived more negatively than straight braggers due to the former’s insincerity. “The critical factor differentiating the two groups of people is sincerity. People don’t like braggers, but they at least see them as more sincere than humblebraggers,” said Francesca Gino.
So, how can we annoy humblebraggers back? “ Just pretend you don’t get whatever it is they try to show off,” a netizen advised. “And respond with genuine sympathy for their complaints.”
28. Which of the following statements is typical of “Versailles literature” ?
A. You know who my father is? My father is Li Gang.
B. Got five offers to date. I’m at a loss which to choose.
C. It’s a headache how to make my son tidy up his room regularly.
D. I’m fed up with living in the countryside with no shopping malls around.
29. What is the psychology behind humblebragging?
A. To win others’ sympathy. B. To earn others’ admiration.
C. To show his/her sincerity. D. To mask his/her complaint.
30. What does the underlined world “circuitous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Roundabout. B. Straightforward. C. Ambiguous. D. Double-edged.
31. What can’t be inferred from the passage?
A. Braggers are relatively more sincere than humblebraggers.
B. Humblebragging is an artificial appearance of being humble.
C. To respond with real sympathy will discourage humblebraggers.
D. If you want to be perceived positively, avoid using Versailles literature.
D
Researchers at the University of Maryland have turned ordinary sheets of wood into transparent material that is nearly as clear as glass, but stronger and with better insulating properties(隔热性). It could become an energy efficient building material in the future.
Wood is made of two basic ingredients: cellulose, which are tiny fibres, and lignin (木质素), which is a glue-like material that bonds the fibres together to give it strength. The lignin also contains molecules called chromophores, which give the wood its brown color and prevent light from passing through.
Early attempts to make transparent wood involved removing the lignin, but this involved harmful chemicals, high temperatures and a lot of time, making the product expensive and somewhat fragile. The new technique is so cheap and easy that it could literally be done in a backyard.
Starting with pieces of wood a meter long and one millimeter thick, the scientists simply brushed on a solution(溶液)of hydrogen peroxide using an ordinary paint brush. When left in the sun, or under a UV lamp for an hour or so, the peroxide remove color from the brown chromophores but left the lignin undamaged, so the wood turned white. Next, they filled the wood with a tough transparent epoxy, which filled in the spaces in the wood and then hardened. This made the white wood transparent.
As window material, it would be much more resistant to accidental breakage. The clear wood is lighter than glass, with better insulating properties, which is important because windows are a major source of heat loss in buildings. It also might take less energy to produce clear wood because there are no high temperatures involved.
Transparent wood could become an alternative to glass in energy efficient buildings, or perhaps coverings for solar panels in harsh environments. There could be no end of uses.
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The classification of wood strength. B. The characteristics of wood.
C. The causes of wood color. D. The structure of wood.
33. How did the researchers make wood transparent in the past?
A. By removing the lignin. B. By reducing chemicals.
C. By lowering the temperature. D. By changing the experiment site.
34. What is the function of the epoxy?
A. To make the wood stronger. B. To take away the brown color.
C. To turn the wood transparent. D. To fill the spaces in the wood.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Replacing Glass with Wood B. Turning Wood Transparent
C. Energy Saving Material D. Eco-friendly Alternative

The Cassini-Huygens space probe(探测器), which reached Saturn (土星)last week has sent back amazing photographs of the planet’s famous rings viewed in ultraviolet light. 36 The different colors show exactly what the rings are. The red means the ring contains tiny pieces of rock and the blue and green is likely to be a mixture of water and frozen gases. 37 That’s why it is so light and it could float on water — if a big enough ocean could be found!
________It aims to explore the planet and its rings and moons. It was launched in 1997 and its mission was to explore the “gas giant” planet, which is the furthest planet to be seen from the Earth without a telescope.
Scientists say the spacecrafts four-year tour of Saturn may tell them how the rings are formed. 39
The probe has sent back pictures of some of Saturn’s moons, including Phoebe and Titan. Phoebe has a strange shape. 40 Saturn’s biggest moon, Titan, is believed to be the only body in the solar system other than the Earth with liquid on the surface. The images of Phoebe and Titan look strangely like photos of the Earth and our own moon, taken decades ago by the earliest space missions.
A. Saturn itself is made of gases.
B. The pictures are hard to take in space.
C. The probe is an international space project.
D. They will discover more secrets about the spacecraft.
E. The pictures show them in shades of blue, green and red.
F. It will also study the plant’s atmosphere and magnetic field.
G. Unlike other planets and their moons, it is not perfectly round.

书面表达(满分25分)
Last week, an activity called “Beijing opera entering Campus” was held in our school.
In the morning, we clapped warmly to welcome two famous artists gave us a detailed introduction to the Beijing opera. We listened attentively and learned that there are five main roles in Beijing opera, and the facial mask on each of them tells the characteristics of the role. After the lecture, one artist showed us how to paint the facial mask on our face, and the other taught us the typical moves step by step. Under the patient guidance of the artists, we learned the basic skills and developed strong interest. After several rehearsals, we were ready to stage a scene from “Journey to the West”. With excitement and nervousness, I played Sun Wukong with the lady artist, and our performance met with loud applause .
Through this activity, I’ve found Beijing opera appealing and learned it must take a long and hard training to become a good performer. I am expecting to spread Beijing opera to more audience.
