Pinocchio may be just a children’s fairy tale, but Spanish scientists at the University of Granada recently investigated the so-called “Pinocchio effect” and found that our noses don’t grow when we tell a lie, but actually shrink a bit.
Dr. Emilio Gomez Milan and his team developed a lie dectector test that used thermography to tell if people were lying, and found that whenever participants in their research were being untruthful, the temperature of the tips of their noses dropped up to 1.2℃, while the temperature of their forehead increased up to 1.5℃. Scientists also found that drop in temperature at nose level actually caused it to slightly shrink, although the difference is undetected by the human eye.
“One has to think in order to lie, which rises the temperature of the forehead,” Dr. Gomez Milan explained the findings. “At the same time we feel anxious, which lowers the temperature of the nose. ”
For this study, researchers asked a number of 60 students to perform various tasks while being scanned by thermal imaging technology. One of these tasks involved calling a 3 to 4 minutes call to their parents, partner or a friend and telling a significant lie. Participants had to devise the lie by themselves during the call, and the thermal cameras picked up this “reverse Pinocchio effect" caused by the fluctuation(起伏)in temperature in the nose and forehead. Interestingly, the thermal lie detector picked up the temperature difference in 80 percent of test subjects, which is a better rate of success than that of any modern lie doctor.
“With this method we have achieved to increase accuracy and reduce the occurrence of ‘false positives’, something that is frequently with other methods such as the polygraph (测谎仪),” said Dr. Emilio Gómez Milán, who added that law enforcement interviewers could one day combine other lie detection technology with thermal imaging to achieve better results.
The thermal lie detector has been the most reliable in the world, 10% more than the popular polygraph.
    24. Why does the author mention “Pinocchio effect” at the beginning?
    A. To tell a fariy story. B. To warn us not to lie.
    C. To introduce a research. D. To inspire us to doubt old beliefs.
    25. According to the research, what might happen if you tell a lie?
    A. Your nose gets longer. B. Your nose becomes smaller.
    C. Your temperature gets higher. D. Your temperature remains stable.
    26. What can we learn about the research?
    A. Researchers conduct the study by interviewing.
    B. Researchers design different lies for participants.
    C. The thermal lie detector will prove a popular one.
    D. The thermal lie detector may assist law enforcement.
    27. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Will lie detectors tell the truth?
    B. Will lying make your nose longer?
    C. Will lying make your temperature rise?
    D. Will thermal imaging technology be reliable?
    C
What is an accent(口音)?An accent is a flavoring to you that influences the sounds of words and sentences. In Birmingham you might hear “lake” sounding close to “like”, and in Ireland you might hear “this” sounding close to “diss”.
Accents are related to social group. Everyone has an accent, and for every accent there are groups of people who react badly to it. These reactions are the result of prejudice(偏见)--- an unreasoned jumping to conclusions.
Everybody has prejudices about accents. I certainly do. I have held prejudices about other people’s accents. But over the years, my experience of working with people from all kinds of backgrounds has led me to give up these prejudices. However, I still have prejudices that I find difficult to control.
Studies tell us that no accent is better than any other. But the reality is that many people judge others according to accents.
Jacob,Member of Parliament(议会),remembers when he first stood unsuccessfully for election in Fife, Scotland, “I gradually realized that whatever I happened to be speaking about, the number of voters in my favor dropped as soon as I opened my mouth. ”
And some people change their accents to sound more refined(文雅的)when talking to people outside their circle of family and friends.
Sky News ran a report recently in which an 18-year old woman was trying to sound less posh (上等人的),that is speaking non-standard English, because she didn't like the strangers telling her that she must be rich and from a famous family.
Lastly, it's worth being reminded that people can have an accent and still be recognized.
    28. What does the author think of accent prejudice?
    A. It is reasonable.
    B. It should be banned.
    C. It is hard to avoid.
    D. It causes serious social issue.
    29. Why did Jacob fail in the election?
    A. What he said was unwise.
    B. He spoke with accent.
    C. He broke the election rules.
    D. He was unable to make himself understood.
    30. What did the 18-year-old woman try to do according to Sky News?
    A. To keep her ways of speaking. B. To change her accent.
    C. To pretend to be a well-educated person. D. To learn the upper-class British accent.
    31. What does the last sentence of the passage mean?
    A. The accent tells what kind of people you are.
    B. It is easy to recognize people with accent.
    C. People with accent can also be successful.
    D. It is important to recognize one’s accent.
    D
Plant-based food, like beans and nuts, can provide vital nutrients (营养物) using a small part of the land required to produce meat and dairy products. By changing animal-sourced food into plant-based food, much of the remaining land could support ecosystems that absorb CO2, according to a new study.
In their study, the researchers analyzed and mapped areas where production of animal-sourced food, which requires 83% of Earth’s agricultural land, prevents the growth of native vegetation(植被),including forests. They focused on places where changing what people grow and eat could free up space for ecosystems to grow again.
According to the researchers’ findings, vegetation re-growth could make less CO2 given off, thus reducing the chance of warming the planet, if demand for meat were to decrease greatly in the coming decades along with its great land requirements. “We should think of changing our eating habits and choosing an environmentally friendly diet so that native forests can be restored(恢复),” says Hayek, leader of the study from New York University.
Technological solutions to climate change may soon appear, like machines that remove CO2, directly from the atmosphere. Placing too much confidence in these technologies could prove dangerous, however, according to the study. So restoring native vegetation on large agricultural land may be now our safest choice for removing CO2. There’s no need to bet our future only on technologies that are still not tested widely.
The benefits of cutting back on meat and dairy products reach far beyond dealing with climate change. “Reduced meat production would also be beneficial to water quality, wildlife habitat and biodiversity(生物多样性),” notes William Ripple, a professor of ecology at Oregon State University.
    32. What is the new study mainly about?
    A. The food’s nutrition. B. The greenhouse effect.
    C. The animal-plant relationship. D. The agriculture-ecosystem relationship.
    33. Why does the study suggest changing animal-sourced food to plant-based food?
    A. To improve ecosystems. B.To make a greater profit.
    C. To save space for humans. D. To produce more nutrients.
    34. What’s the author’s attitude towards technological solutions to climate change?
    A. Uncaring. B. Cautious.
    C. Supportive. D. Disapproving.
    35. What can we expect of developing plant-based food according to William Ripple?
    A. It will stop diseases from animals.
    B. It tends to control climate change.
    C. It can increase the number of wildlife.
    D. It is likely to change people’s eating habits.

    第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Paper bags remains an option in grocery stores and are preferred by many consumers for convenience. 36 . The production of paper bags is, however, harmful to the environment in several ways. There are many advantages and disadvantages of the consumption and production of paper bags.
Ten billion paper bags are used every year in the United States alone. 37 . Many consumers prefer paper bags because they hold more than plastic bags and are stronger, but stores mostly prefer to give out plastic bags because they are cheaper.
Paper bags are mostly made from original tree pulp(纸浆) because recycled pulp is not as strong, so their production begins with cutting down trees. 38 . For one thing, cutting down trees reduces the absorption of greenhouse gases, and the production of paper bags requires use of poisonous chemicals that contribute to air and water pollution. For another, the transportation of paper bags requires the consumption of fossil fuel that causes further air pollution.
39 . The producion of paper bags also creates 50 times more water pollutants than the production of plastic bags and 70 percent more air pollutants. Additionally, it requires more energy to recycle paper bags than plastic bags. However, the recycling and reusing rate for paper bags is higher. 40 .
    A. It takes 14 million trees to meet this demand.
    B. Paper bag production harms the environment in two ways.
    C. But experts advise using plastic bags instead of paper bags.
    D. They can be reused as garbage bags and for groceries several times.
    E. Paper bags and plastic bags have their own strengths and weaknesses.
    F. Some people assume they are less damaging to the environment than plastic bags.
    G. The production of a paper bag requires four times as much energy as a plastic bag.
