The ear is made up of three different sections that work together to collect sounds and send them to the brain: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.
The outer ear is made up of the pinna and the ear canal. The pinna is the part of the ear you see on the side of your head. Its main job is to gather sounds and funnel them to the ear canal, which is the pathway that leads to the middle ear. Glands (腺) in the skin lining the ear canal produce earwax (耳垢),which protects the canal by cleaning out dirt and helping to prevent infections.
The middle ear is an air-filled hole that turns sound waves into vibrations and delivers them to the inner ear. The middle ear is separated from the outer ear by the eardrum (鼓膜),a thin piece of tissue stretched tight across the ear canal. Sounds hit the eardrum, causing it to move.
The vibrations from the middle ear change into nerve signals in the inner ear. The inner ear includes the cochlea (耳蜗) and the semicircular canals. The snail-shaped cochlea changes the vibrations from the middle ear into nerve signals. These signals travel to the brain along the cochlear nerve, also known as the hearing nerve.
Teach kids to protect their hearing by paying attention to the noise levels they’re exposed to. Have them turn down the volume on video games, TVs, and, especially, portable music players. Make sure they take hearing protection ( like earplugs or protective headphones) when they’ll be around loud noises (at a concert, car race, etc. ).
If your child has any trouble with hearing, turn to your doctor. Treating hearing loss early can limit the damage.
24. What’s the function of the ear canal?
A. To serve as a bridge.
B. To produce earwax in the ear.
C. To prevent infections.
D.To gather and funnel sounds.
25. Which part is between the outer ear and the middle ear?
A. The ear canal.
B. The eardrum.
C. The inner ear.
D. The cochlea.
26. What’s the author’s advice to the child with hearing impairment?
A. Consult the doctor.
B. Take hearing protection.
C. Clean ears regularly.
D. Turn down the volume.
27. Who is the passage written for?
A. The scientists.
B. The parents.
C. The teachers.
D. The kids.

A 23-year-old British woman has invented a product that she hopes will one day take the place of single-use plastic.
The new product is made by combining fishing waste and algae (藻类). It could be used to replace plastic bags or containers that people use once and throw away. Lucy Hughes created the material, called MarinaTex, for her final year project at the University .
MarinaTex is edible. To put it another way, it can be tasted without danger. Hughes says it also is strong and stable. But unlike plastic, MarinaTex breaks down in four to six weeks under normal conditions and does not pollute the soil. The inventor said she is concerned about the growing amount of plastic in ocean waters. She noted one report that there would be more plastic than fish in the world’s ocean by the year 2050. The United Nations estimates that 100 million tons of plastic waste has already been left in the oceans. Hughes also was investigating ways to reduce the amount of waste from the fishing industry. The industry produces an estimated 50 million tons of waste worldwide each year,U.N. officials say.
Examining fish parts left over from processing helped to give her the idea for a material that was useful and did not harm the environment. “Why do we need to have hundreds of man-made polymers (聚合体) when nature has so many already available?” she asked. After months of testing, Hughes produced a strong, flexible sheet that forms at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius. Inventor James Dyson said that MarinaTex is “stronger, safer and much more sustainable” than plastic . It is also easier to break down. Hughes will receive about $41,000 in prize money as the first-place winner of the James Dyson Award. She plans to use the money to better develop the product and ways to mass - produce it. “Further research and development will insure that MarinaTex evolves further, and becomes part of a global answer to the abundance of single-use plastic waste,” Dyson said.
28. When did Lucy Hughes create MarinaTex?
A. At university.
B. After graduation.
C. Before going to university.
D. After winning the James Dyson Award.
29. What do we know about MarinaTex?
A. It is safe seafood.
B. It is a kind of waste.
C. It is a new kind of plastic.
D. It is a safe material that can replace plastic.
30. What gets Hughes to create MarinaTex ?
A. Her concern about the growing amount of plastic in the ocean.
B. Her occupational habit of trying out new things.
C. Her hope to help develop the fishing industry.
D. Her desire to win the prize money.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. We need to have hundreds of MarinaTex available.
B. Hughes produced MarinaTex without much effort.
C. MarinaTex will be a good solution to plastic waste.
D. Hughes is the first winner of the James Dyson Award.

A report revealed that about 85% of the working mothers surveyed felt that their parenthood had affected their career “in a significant way”. Over 30% of them said that they went through a “long period of mental distress” before announcing their pregnancy at work, and 35% said their bosses immediately started looking for their replacements after learning about their pregnancy.
While Chinese women may no longer sacrifice their careers for their husbands, they are still expected to do so for their children. The study found that nearly half of the mothers left the labor force for at least one year after giving birth, among whom roughly 20% ended up becoming stay-at-home moms. When asked about the impact of motherhood on their identities and life goals, nearly 35% said that the most profound change was how they started to balance between family and work.
The adjustment, however, is not always by choice. Responding to a question about the distribution of childcare labor in their home, almost 40% of the working mothers said that their husbands basically spent no time on parenting.” Moreover, over half of the husbands didn’t use up their paternity leave (陪产假), whereas about 21% never took it at all.
Another key finding from the survey was that although it’s illegal for Chinese companies to ask a woman about family plans, many employers still do. The unlawful yet prevalent practice has been a main factor influencing women’s decisions about timing of motherhood. The survey showed that about 40% of the childless respondents delayed parenthood because of “the time it would take,” which they thought would have a negative impact on their promotion opportunities.
In theory, there has never been a better time than now for working mothers in China to shine. Faced with an aging population and shrinking workforce, Chinese officials encourage Chinese women to have babies while working at the same time.
32. What can be concluded from the first paragraph?
A. Some women choose to hide their pregnancy.
B. Pregnant working women will be replaced immediately.
C. Half of working mothers go through long-term depression.
D. Most working mothers are significantly affected by parenthood.
33. What are Chinese women expected to do according to the passage?
A. To help their husbands’ career.
B. To become stay-at-home moms.
C. To sacrifice their careers for their children.
D. To be successful both at home and in company.
34. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “prevalent”?
A. Common.
B. Obvious.
C. Embarrassing.
D. Potential.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Women have greater pressure than men.
B. Pregnancy and motherhood affect working women.
C. Balance between work and family is unavailable.
D. Working moms have less promotion opportunities.
