Today, we study literature from a young age-learning about our histories, faraway worlds and influential people. Whether we notice or not, these stories-both fiction and non-fiction-guide us throughout our lives. They allow us to see the world through another' s eyes, open up our world and teach us about every subject known to man.
Despite their importance, many people throw out their old books-laying waste the wisdom that lies on each page. In an effort to save this knowledge and share it with those less fortunate, a garbage man in Bogota, Colombia has been saving thrown-away books for 20 years and sharing them with those in need.
“I hated to see all the books in the dustbins of wealthier neighborhoods. So I started to rescue them,” said Gutierrez. The first book he found was a copy of the classic novel Anna Karenina. The Tolstoy book was later joined by The Little Prince, Sophie’s World, The Iliad and a number of novels. Today, he has collected around 25, 000 books.
His growing collection didn't go unnoticed. Gutierrez's neighbors were soon borrowing the books to help with their children’s homework. “There was a lack of them in our neighborhood, so we started to help," said Gutierrez.
The ground floor of Gutierrez’s home is now fled with books, from floor to ceiling. Over spilling with books, he opened it up as a free library, with the help of his wife Luz Gutierrez and their three children.
Word eventually spread around about Gutierrez and his books. Most of the books now come from donations. He now travels around the country, delivering free books to poor and remote districts. The library, named “The Strength of Words", has donated books to some 235 schools, institutions and community libraries across Colombia.
24. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By stating some facts. B. By contradicting a theory.
C. By describing a scene. D. By referring to documents.
25. What did the Tolstoy book mean to Gutierrez?
A. A heavy financial burden.
B. A companion in difficult times.
C. The beginning of his charity campaign.
D. One of his greatest achievements in life.
26. Which saying does Gutierrez' s story lead us to believe?
A.A good book is a light to the soul.
B. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.
27. What's the best title for the text?
A. Tolstoy books recovered from dustbins.
B. Literature now appeals to garbage collectors.
C. Free libraries popular with neighborhood kids.
D. Garbage man builds a library from rescued books.

Masks that helped save lives are proving a deadly danger for wildlife, with birds and sea creatures trapped in the shocking number of thrown — away facial coverings. Single-use masks have been found around pavements, waterways and beaches worldwide. Worn once, the thin protective materials can take hundreds of years to decompose (分解)."Face masks aren't going away any time soon — but when we throw them away, these items can harm the environment and the animals, " Ashley Fruno of animal rights group PETA said.
In Britain, a gull was rescued by the RSPCA after its legs became tangled in the straps (带子)of a mask for up to a week. The animal welfare charity took it to a wildlife hospital for treatment before its release.
The biggest impact may be in the water. More than 1.5 billion masks made their way into the world's oceans last year, accounting for around 6,200 extra tonnes of ocean plastic pollution, according to environmental group Oceans Asia.
Conservationists in Brazil found one mask inside the stomach of a penguin after its body was washed up on a beach, while a dead pufferfish was discovered caught inside another off the coast of Miami. French campaigners found a dead crab trapped in a mask near the Mediterranean. Masks and gloves are "particularly problematic" for sea creatures, says George Leonard, chief scientist from NGO Ocean Conservancy. "When those plastics break down in the environment, they then enter the food chain and impact entire ecosystems.95 he added.
There has been a shift towards greater use of reusable cloth masks as the pandemic (疫情)has worn on, but many are still using the lighter single-use varieties. Campaigners have urged people to bin them properly and cut the straps to reduce the risk of animals becoming trapped. Oceans Asia has also called on governments to increase fines for littering and encourage the use of washable masks.
28. What's Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The problem of littering masks.
B. The long time to break down masks.
C. The threat of masks to wildlife.
D. The protective use of masks to people.
29. What did the animal welfare charity do to the gull?
A. They gave first aid to the bird.
B. They released the bird at once.
C. They kept the bird for about a week.
D. They sent the bird to hospital.
30. How is Paragraph 4 developed?
A. By providing examples. B. By giving explanations.
C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing causes.
31. Which measure has been taken to help solve the problem?
A. Forbidding the use of single-use masks.
B. Wearing reusable cloth masks.
C. Cutting the masks up before throwing,
D. Increasing fines for binning masks.
D
A strong coffee after a poor night's sleep is the kick-start many people need in the morning but new research suggests that it might be best to have a bite to eat first.
A study has found that drinking coffee first can have a negative effect on blood sugar control — a risk factor for diabetes(糖尿病) and heart disease.
"We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee — subjectively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee," said Professor James Betts, at the University of Bath in the UK.
For their study, researchers at the University of Bath got 29 healthy men and women to take part in three different overnight experiments, with at least a week between them.
In one, the participants had a normal night's sleep, roughly from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and were asked to consume a sugary drink on waking in the morning. They then experienced an interrupted night's sleep, where the researchers woke them every hour for five minutes by sending them text messages to which they had to respond - and upon waking were given the same sugary drink.
On another night, participants experienced the same sleep interruption, but this time were first given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.
They found that one night of interrupted sleep did not worsen the participants' blood sugar and insulin (胰岛素) responses when compared to the normal night's sleep — although previous research suggested that losing many hours of sleep or many nights of poor sleep could have a negative effect. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast actually increased the blood sugar response by around 50% — suggesting that relying on coffee after a bad night to stop feeling sleepy could limit your body's ability to tolerate the sugar in your breakfast.
32. What does the underlined word "kick-start" in paragraph l refer to?
A. A kind of sport. B. A kind of power.
C. A kind of medicine. D. A kind of belief.
33. What was unchanged in the three experiments?
A. The duration of sleep. B. The blood sugar response.
C. The sugary drink. D. The intake of coffee.
34. What increased the participants' blood sugar response most before breakfast?
A. A normal sugary drink. B. A normal night's sleep.
C. An interrupted night's sleep. D. A cup of strong black coffee.
35. How did researchers draw the conclusion?
A. By comparing the results. B. By listing some examples.
C. By surveying the participants. D. By referring to some documents.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What makes you cry? Being moved by a sad movie, waving a loved one off, or getting emotional after splitting up with your partner can all cause tears to roll down our faces. 36
When you think about it, shedding tears from your eyes can cause embarrassment or confusion. But it seems to be an automatic reaction when we get sad or upset. 37 However, the feeling is the same – your cheeks puff up, your eyes tighten and before you know it, tears are streaming down your face. Some of us may weep a little while others might cry like a baby.
A study in the UK in 2017 found that women admitted they cry 72 times a year. This was, on average, more than men. Adam Rutherford, lead researcher, says that the result has been pretty much consistent with previous research. 38 Are they just more embarrassed about showing their true feelings? The debate continues.
One place where we experience emotional and tearful outbursts is in the workplace. 39 Someone might be stressed with a heavy workload. And, as therapist Joanna Cross put it, “crying is often a build-up of frustration and undealt-with situations and it’s a bit of a final straw moment.” She describes how someone might start weeping when they’re just asked to make a cup of tea. Actually, their stress has accumulated to the breaking point.
But crying in the office or elsewhere can be an effective stress reliever. It can actually make you feel better. 40 Crying your eyes out shows others how you feel, so perhaps it’s a crying shame that more of us, particularly men, don’t cry more often.
A. Then how do we cope with it?
B. This can be where emotions run high.
C. People reach their breaking point in different ways.
D. We all have the power to cry, but is that a good thing?
E. Maybe it dissolves or clears the negative feelings you’ve had.
F. What brings about this reaction differs from person to person.
G. But does this mean men don’t get as upset or emotional as women?

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch(胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price-five dollars-was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.
Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to support their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered (风化的)door and went inside, Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack(面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, "But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for some time?
"I'll try," the shopkeeper smiled. "People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while."
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out.
He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags(装钉子的麻袋). People built their own buildings in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used nail bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty-soda tin.

写作第一节
Dear Tom,
I will take a two-week trip to New York with my parents in the summer holiday. I'm writing to ask you to do me a favor.
We'd like you to recommend us a hotel near the subway in order to get around New York more easily. And the hotel with a private kitchen is better because we want to cook meals by ourselves. I addition, please recommend a reasonable tour route so that we can save a lot of time. More importantly, I wonder whether you can pick us up at the airport because we aren't familiar with New York.
We'd appreciate it very much if you could help us. I'm looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
写作第二节
Paragraph 1
Every day after school, Reuben started his plan. Cold and hungry, Reuben wandered the streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save more money, he even decided to
deliver papers in the early morning. Exhausted and tired as he felt, he still stuck to the
plan. It was the brooch in the shop window that reminded him that what he did was
worthwhile. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually.
Paragraph2
Finally the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and
began to count. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly,
Reuben rushed for the shop to buy the brooch. The moment he got the beautiful brooch, he burst through the front door and placed it in Dora’s hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly into her arms, with tears filling up in her eyes.
