Cmpanin planting is the idea that sme kinds f plants can help each ther grw. Plants that are cmpatible(兼容的,能共处的) tgether generally have similar needs in terms f nutrients, sil and misture levels.
Advice abut which plants are cmpatible is smetimes based mre n traditin than prf. But experts say there is evidence t supprt certain cmbinatins. These can imprve harvests, reduce disease and help with pest cntrl by attracting helpful insects.
Fr example, sme kinds f sil bacteria take nitrgen frm the air and make it int a frm that plants can use. The plants hld the nitrgen in their rts. Legumes (豆科植物) are especially gd at this nitrgen (氮)fixing. Then any crps that share the same space with the legumes can get the nitrgen when the rts are brken dwn.
Beans and ptates can als share territry well because their rts reach different levels in the sil. Deeprted vegetables get nutrients and misture frm lwer dwn in the sil, s they d nt cmpete with plants with shallwer rts.
But sme plants placed tgether may harm each ther's develpment. Fr example,tmates d nt like wet sil but watercress des, s yu wuld prbably want t keep them separated.
Sme kinds f prduce shuld be kept apart even after being harvested. This is because f ethylene gas (乙烯气体). Ethylene is a plant hrmne (激素) that can cause sme fds t ripen t quickly. Apples release ethylene gas. Apricts, melns and tmates als release a lt f ethylene. Sme vegetables are easily affected by ethylene, including asparagus, brccli, cabbages and cucumbers.
This risk f ripening t sn is why markets ften separate high ethyleneprducing fds frm thse that are sensitive t the gas. But if yu put an apple in a bag with a green banana,the ethylene frm the apple will make the banana ready t eat sner.
What abut peaches,plums and nectarines? These kinds f fruit d nt need any help frm an apple—they release enugh ethylene t ripen themselves. But that des nt mean there is n way t get the jb dne faster.
