Dear Peter,
I’m writing to inform you that your poem in Chinese has won the first place in the International Students’ Chinese Poem Competition held by our school. Congratulations!
I have read your poem, which not only reflects your knowledge of Chinese language and your love for Chinese culture, but is also full of unique and creative thinking. Therefore, the first time I read your poem, I was deeply impressed by the inspirational lines and I read it three times in a row. Additionally, I hear that all the award-winning poems will be included in our school’s Excellent Poetry Collection.
You are indeed a great poem writer, and I sincerely hope you can create more poems for us to read.
Best regards!
Yours,
Li Hua

(Text 1)
W: Sir, I really would love to be a policewoman. I especially like the teamwork.
M: Sounds interesting, but I’m afraid the job is not proper for you, I mean, without any special training or experience.
(Text 2)
M: Rose, I was wondering if you’d like to go to a movie with me this evening.
W: Oh, I’d love to. What time is it?
M: At eight.
W: I’m afraid I can’t get there before eight. I have to pay a visit to one of my friends who is ill.
(Text 3)
M: I don’t remember where I put my cell phone.
W: It is in the kitchen.
M: The kitchen? Yeah. Got it.
W: You’re never prepared. Don’t depend on me next time.
(Text 4)
M: You look a bit troubled!
W: Yes. I’m supposed to move out of my dorm, but my friend just called to say that he had something important to do and that he couldn’t make it here.
M: That’s not a problem. I can lend you a hand.
(Text 5)
W: Here try this one for size, please.
M: Mm, I think it’s a little too big over the shoulders and I don’t like the style.
W: Please come this way and see more jackets over there.
(Text 6)
M: Excuse me, madam. I’m a reporter from radio station QRX, and I wonder if you’d mind answering a few questions for our survey today.
W: Uh…why not?
M: What’s your name?
W: Susie Green.
M: Susie, what do you do for a living?
W: I’m a dancer.
M: What do you do for fun?
W: Well, I like to read classics—you know, Dickens, Shakespeare, …uh…books like that.
M: And who do you admire most in this world?
W: Sophia Loren. She starred in many great movies.
(Text 7)
W: Bridge Hotel. Can I help you?
M: Yes, I’d like to book a single room from May 28th to June 3rd.
W: We do have a single room available for those days.
M: What is the price, please?
W: $75 per person per night. We do have a discount as you will be staying with us up to 5 days. That price will be $62.
M: What services come with that?
W: You’ll have a room with a bath, and things like a television, a telephone…
M: What about the Internet? That’s what I care about most.
W: That’s also included.
M: That sounds not bad. I’ll take it.
(Text 8)
W: Do you know anything about Dr. Miller’s classes?
M: Yes. Are you in his class?
W: No, I’m taking his class next term.
M: He is very serious and patient. He is really clear what you need to learn to get a good grade. But he is very strict about homework. Are you willing to study hard?
W: Yes, I guess so.
M: What I like most about him is that he is a teacher who always understands others. Do you enjoy that in a teacher?
W: Yes, I had such a teacher before.
M: Did you know that he came to England last year after 10 years of teaching in America?
W: No, I didn’t, but that could be a good thing.
M: Well, take a look at everything and work out what is best for you. Good luck!
(Text 9)
W: Hello? Video Club.
M: Hello. My name is Gary. How much does it cost to join the club?
W: It costs five pounds to join and then two pounds a day for each video you take home. You pay one pound fifty for returning a video late.
M: Do you have the latest films?
W: New films arrive every week. Every month, we send out a list of new films. Once a year, there’s a video club meeting—people tell us what they’d like in the future.
M: What do people ask for?
W: American films mostly—and we have lots of those. But we also have some good British films and also a few from Australia.
M: Right. I’d like to join.
W: OK. You need to fill in a form. We have them in the shop, or I can send you one by post, or there’s one on the club’s website.
M: I’ll go to the shop and get one then.
W: OK. Goodbye.
(Text 10)
W: I try to do some kind of exercise or sport most days. My health club opens at 5:30 a.m., so I usually do a 45-minute workout before I go to the office. It helps me get in shape for the week. My health club has a 20-meter pool, which is OK for a quick swim in the morning.
I think it’s important to be healthy and fit. I probably don’t eat as well as I should. I never have breakfast. I just drink a strong black coffee at home. And I usually phone out for lunch and have a sandwich or a hamburger at my desk. I really enjoy eating out with my friends in the evening. I do that at least three times a week.
At weekends and in the summer, I like to spend time at the beach with friends. We play soccer on the beach and there’re always lots of water sports going on. I usually play tennis on Sunday evenings. I also play soccer for my sports club team on Friday evenings. It means I have a good excuse to get out of the office at the end of the week.
