Want to become a better reader? Here are four important things to remember about reading speed :

Knowing why you are reading or what you are reading to find out will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.

Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, arithmetic problems, science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.

Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news letters from friends, pieces of news from local, or home-town, papers, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors.

In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

    1. Which should be read slowly according to the passage?

    A. Stories for enjoyment          B. Arithmetic problems

    C. Letters from friends          D. News from hometown newspapers

    2. How fast should we read?

    A. The faster, the better.               B. The more slowly, the better.

Zarko Hrgic, a former steelworker from Bosnia, has been living in a small riverside cave near the town of Zenica for nearly a decade. He survives on food picked out of dumpsters and leftovers donated by kind souls as he waits to turn 65 and collect his due pension so he can hopefully turn his life around.
In his youth, Zarko worked as a steelworker in Zenica, but decided to try his luck in Germany after his marriage broke down 30 years ago. However, 10 years ago he was sent back to Bosnia for staying and working in Germany illegally. Unfortunately, Zarkos apartment had been destroyed during the Bosnian War (1992 1995) so he had no home to come back to. With no savings to buy a new place, and no one to turn to for help, Zarko eventually ended up in a small mountainside cave on the bank of Babina River .

Zarko never asked for help from the state.  He shares the cave with 13 deserted dogs which he feeds every day with bones from the local butcher shop.

The thick stone walls of the cave also provide excellent insulation(隔离) from the outside weather. This winter, temperatures in the area have dropped to -25 degrees Celsius, but Zarko says he hasnt felt the chill at all. In fact, he only lights a fire when he needs to cook . In the hot summer months, the cave is always a cool place to escape the burning sun.
Zarko starts his day by making and smoking a cigarette. He then tends to his 13 four-legged friends, preparing them breakfast and making sure they are in good shape. He then makes his first trip to the dustbins around Zenica, looking for food and other things he can use. He usually checks the dustbins three times a day, and almost always finds something to eat, but on bad days, he can buy himself some food with money he makes chopping wood for the locals.

    1. What does Zarko expect to help him lead a better life?

    A. His pension             B.  Kind donations.

    C. Food from dustbins.   D. Leftovers in restaurants.

5 . Why did Zarko return to Bosnia after staying in Germany for many years?

    A. He couldnt find a job there.       B. He missed his family so much.

    C. He was divorced with his wife.         D. He wasnt allowed to stay there.

6 . What can be learnt about Zarkos cave?

    A. It is near his former apartment.               B. Its stone walls keep giving off heat.

    C. It feels warm in winter and cool in summer.     D. Its indoor temperature drops to -25 in winter.

7 . What can be inferred about Zarko from the last paragraph?

    A. He is a non-smoker.                   B. He is quite friendly to his dogs.

    C. He goes out twice on bad days.          D. He makes a living as a woodcutter.

    C

Bees play a vital role in the world. Unfortunately, bees are dying by the second.

The main purpose of bees is to make honey. Honeyshockingly, does not exist for human consumption; it is essential to the insects. Honeybees store honey in their hives (蜂箱) in order for the bees to have energy for their flight muscles and for heating the hives during the winter period. They collect pollen (花粉) which supplies protein for young bees to grow.

According  to  National  Honey  Board,  the  increased production and quality of agricultural crops as a result of honeybee pollination are valued at more than $14.6 billion per year. These insects are responsible for over 70 of the fruits and vegetables we eat today, including apples, grapes, coffee, beansand broccoli.

So if they are so valuable to agriculture, why do they keep dying off? A key suspect seems to be pesticides (农药)Honeybees who are exposed to pesticides result in the damage to their neurological (神经系统的) functions, specifically memory or behavior. And that's why the  majority  of worker bees disappear and leave behind a queen, plenty of food and a few nurse bees to care for the remaining immature bees and the queen. There are several other causes of the decline of beesincluding the destruction of natural habitats, like woodlandsforests, and other habitats for bees. Climate change is also a factor in the decline of the wild bee population.

Actually, there are a variety of methods to help the bee population grow. One way is to start your own organic garden by planting  beefriendly  plants.  Pesticides  are  used  in  both industrial practices and even in your home, so it is best to find organic seeds and weed killers.

8Why do honeybees store honey in their hives?

ATo strengthen bee muscles and heat hives in winter.

BTo draw protein out of honey for young bees.

CTo provide enough honey for humans to consume.

    1.  To help attract other insects and make hives stronger.

9Apples and beans are mentioned in the third paragraph to show that         .

Abees can bring in more money for farmers every year

Bbees mainly live on these agricultural crops

Cbees supply human beings with basic food

Dbees are of great importance to fruits and vegetables

10What is most likely to cause the worker bees to leave their hives behind?

AThe fighting among bees.        BThe lack of food.

CThe abuse of pesticides.         DThe destruction of the habitats.

11What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

    AOther tips for choosing seeds.

    BAnother way to save bees.

CMore methods to plant green organic fruits.

DCauses of the decline in the wild bee population.

    D

Can I hug youcommunity nurse Joyce Jebambula asks with a smile as she welcomes me back to her village.Of course I say as I put my arms around her. It's an unbelievable moment.Just at the height of the outbreak more than a year agothere was an “avoid body contact” rule here. It's now been removed.

One of the most challenging parts of reporting this outbreak over the past 18 months is that I haven't been able to touch anyone in the worstaffected countries. When Ebola (埃博拉病毒) survivors described in tears losing their familiesI had to almost sit on my hands to avoid reaching out to comfort them.

The outbreak was declared over in Sierra Leone on November 7.I returned for the celebrations. But despite reaching this longawaited milestoneall is not well.

Ibrahim Koroma, 21clings to his survivor's certificate(证书) outside the home. All 17 of his family are now dead. The certificate is one of his most prized possessions. “He does not pose any risk to the community.” it  reads.

Ibrahim tells me how his landlord has allowed him to stay in one of the rooms of his former family home until the end of the year.He says he doesn't know what he'll do after that.He does some parttime workrelying heavily on help from neighbours. His two little sisters and little brother died in the very room where he now sleeps. He says he often lies awake thinking of themfeeling very bad.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa was the worst on record. In past outbreaks there had only been a few hundred deaths and a few hundred survivors. It was thought that Ebola could live for only three months. But research has now shown it can linger for at least nine months.Scientists are still trying to find how long it could be infectious.

12What does the author think of hugging Joyce?

    AUnbelievable.      BNegative.       CIllegal.    DOrdinary.

13When interviewing Ebola survivorsthe author        .

Akept comforting them with hands      Bcouldn't touch them with hands

Cheld their hands to show sympathy     Dcouldn't help comforting them with hands

14Ibrahim Koroma values his certificate because it         .

Ais a sign of his contributions          Bhas been the only one for him so far

C shows he is a healthy person         Dis a great honor to have it in his village

15We can learn from the passage that         .

AEbola can only survive a few days                BIbrahim's neighbours treat him badly

Cthere were once 17 people in Ibrahim's family      DEbola still influences Ibrahim's life
