Not every parent looks forward to the day when their child goes off to school. In fact some parents are not sending their children to school at all.Instead they are choosing to teach their children at home. This is called homeschooling.Parentscaregiversor private tutors educate children individually at home instead of sending them off to be formally educated in public or private schools. In the US only about three percent of children are homeschooled.

There are many reasons why some parents choose to homeschool. One reason is that some parents do not feel their children are safe in school because of bullying(恃强凌弱)It is said that bullying is very common in the school. Other parents want their children's education to be based on their religion or moral beliefs.Yet other parents think the education in school is not good enough.Homeschooling is also seen as a choice for families that live in rural areas, and families that move frequently.

There are many different ways to homeschooland homeschooling allows parents to design lessons based on their children's needs.Families can purchase textbooks to use or create their own materials. Some parents follow a philosophy called unschoolingwhich allows a child to determine when and how they want to learn based on their natural ability. Some worry that homeschooling means students won't have opportunities to communicate with others.

To solve this problemsome families have created activitieswhere a group of homeschooled students will learn and play together and participate in activities that would normally happen in school like field trips.

Besidesbeing homeschooled doesn't mean a student cannot go to college. Most colleges accept homeschooled students. And the homeschooled students can get the same degreestoo.

21How many American students go to public or private schools?

    AAbout 3%.     BAbout 97%.  CAbout 50%.     DAbout 70%.

22Which is the reason that some parents choose homeschooling?

ASchool bullying exists in some schools.

BSome parents cannot afford the education fees in school.

CSome children want their education to be based on their religion.

DSome parents think the school is too far away.

23What will the parents do to help their children communicate?

AThe parents can buy some textbooks.

BThe parents will allow children to choose what to learn.

CThe parents will organize the children to play together.

DThe parents will teach the children by themselves.

24What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

AHomeschooled students cannot get enough chances to go to college.

BAmerican colleges are fond of the homeschooled students.

CHomeschooled students find it easy to go to some American colleges.

DHomeschooled students have the same rights as students who are formally educated in schools.

I was waiting for my train and on the subway station's floor was a man just sitting there.I looked around and nobody stopped so I just went my way. After a few steps, I turned and asked him whether he needed help.He told me his house was one station further and he would only need to take the train there. So I reached for his hand to help him stand up.

He wanted to take the stairs but I feared that he would hurt himself since he seemed too weak to walk, so I asked him to take the elevator.Even though my mind was trying to turn the danger lights on, I put the thought that I should not go alone with a drunken man out of my mind and accompanied him on the elevator.

We arrived on the platform with no incidents. The man's knees seemed to soften, so I asked him to rest on a bench. While sitting there, he thanked me, telling me that I saved him.No, I said, I really did nothing; he saved himself as he walked on his own feet.

At the next station, we said our goodbyes. Before I knew it, he left 100 dollars and dashed out of the train. There was no way to give him back his money.I wanted to leave it on the seat, but a young woman who thought it belonged to me ran after me and gave me the note.

My initial reaction to getting that money was of shame and I even felt offended. Then I thought he just wanted to thank me, the best way he knew how. Now, my question iswhat act of kindness shall I do with these 100 dollars?

25Why was the man sitting on the subway station's floor?

ABecause he wanted to go home.   BBecause he was seriously ill.

CBecause he was drunk.          DBecause he was waiting for the train.

26Seeing the money left by the man, the author first felt ________.

    Aashamed      Bgrateful    Cdelighted  Dfrustrated

27How will the author possibly deal with the money?

AGive it back.                BBuy something favorable.

CLeave it on the seat.          DGive it to people in need.

28What can we infer from the passage?

AI helped the man the moment I saw him.  BI accompanied the man to take the stairs.

CI thought it unsafe to go alone with the drunken man at first.

DA young woman ran after me and gave me the note.

    C

It's cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.

According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill (跑步机), burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate (调节) its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperaturesand quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.

Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in the summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.

Of course, the threat of smog in some builtup areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, stroke, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust (尾气), and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.

29How does cold weather benefit runners, compared with warm weather?

AThey can run more slowly.         BThey can take in more calories.

CTheir hearts can function harder.     DTheir body temperature can get lower.

    30How does summer affect runners?

AIt builds up their energy quickly.     BIt makes runners tired easily.

CIt lessens runners' stress.           DIt causes heart attack.

31What are the runners supposed to do on smoggy days?

AStop driving cars.              BDo more exercise.

CAvoid outdoor exercise.         DRun late in the morning.

32What can be the best title of the text?

ARefresh with a Winter Run       BTake Outdoor Exercise in Summer

CGo to Run in a Park             DFollow the Tips to Reduce Stress

    D

When I was watching a sports event yesterday, I met with an amazing sight. It was not a gold medal, or a world record broken, but a show of pure courage and determination.

The event was swimming. I watched a man dive off the blocks and knew right away that something was wrong. I'm not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold——his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle.

I heard the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes (划水) and you could tell he was worn out. But in those few awkward strokes, the crowd changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and yell things like, Come on, you can do it He did. The crowd went wild.

Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to take part in the event. Even though he recorded the slowest time, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors——a man that gave his all, knowing that he had no chance but to compete because of the spirit of the games.

33We know from the passage that the swimmer ________.

Awas not professional      Bhad two competitors  Chad a wrong start     Ddidn't try his best

34What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?

AThe swimmer lost his spirit   BThe swimmer didn't finish his match.

CThe audience was touched deeply by the swimmer.

DThe crowd supported the swimmer from the beginning.

35The author's attitude towards the swimmer is that of ________.

    Atolerance B disappointment  Ccarelessness    Dadmiration
