Not every parent looks forward to the day when their child goes off to school. In fact some parents are not sending their children to school at all.Instead they are choosing to teach their children at home. This is called homeschooling.Parents, caregivers,or private tutors educate children individually at home instead of sending them off to be formally educated in public or private schools. In the US only about three percent of children are homeschooled.
There are many reasons why some parents choose to homeschool. One reason is that some parents do not feel their children are safe in school because of bullying(恃强凌弱).It is said that bullying is very common in the school. Other parents want their children's education to be based on their religion or moral beliefs.Yet other parents think the education in school is not good enough.Homeschooling is also seen as a choice for families that live in rural areas, and families that move frequently.
There are many different ways to homeschool, and homeschooling allows parents to design lessons based on their children's needs.Families can purchase textbooks to use or create their own materials. Some parents follow a philosophy called unschooling, which allows a child to determine when and how they want to learn based on their natural ability. Some worry that homeschooling means students won't have opportunities to communicate with others.
To solve this problem, some families have created activities, where a group of homeschooled students will learn and play together and participate in activities that would normally happen in school like field trips.
Besides, being homeschooled doesn't mean a student cannot go to college. Most colleges accept homeschooled students. And the homeschooled students can get the same degrees, too.
21.How many American students go to public or private schools?
A.About 3%. B.About 97%. C.About 50%. D.About 70%.
22.Which is the reason that some parents choose homeschooling?
A.School bullying exists in some schools.
B.Some parents cannot afford the education fees in school.
C.Some children want their education to be based on their religion.
D.Some parents think the school is too far away.
23.What will the parents do to help their children communicate?
A.The parents can buy some textbooks.
B.The parents will allow children to choose what to learn.
C.The parents will organize the children to play together.
D.The parents will teach the children by themselves.
24.What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A.Homeschooled students cannot get enough chances to go to college.
B.American colleges are fond of the homeschooled students.
C.Homeschooled students find it easy to go to some American colleges.
D.Homeschooled students have the same rights as students who are formally educated in schools.

I was waiting for my train and on the subway station's floor was a man just sitting there.I looked around and nobody stopped so I just went my way. After a few steps, I turned and asked him whether he needed help.He told me his house was one station further and he would only need to take the train there. So I reached for his hand to help him stand up.
He wanted to take the stairs but I feared that he would hurt himself since he seemed too weak to walk, so I asked him to take the elevator.Even though my mind was trying to turn the danger lights on, I put the thought that I should not go alone with a drunken man out of my mind and accompanied him on the elevator.
We arrived on the platform with no incidents. The man's knees seemed to soften, so I asked him to rest on a bench. While sitting there, he thanked me, telling me that I saved him.No, I said, I really did nothing; he saved himself as he walked on his own feet.
At the next station, we said our goodbyes. Before I knew it, he left 100 dollars and dashed out of the train. There was no way to give him back his money.I wanted to leave it on the seat, but a young woman who thought it belonged to me ran after me and gave me the note.
My initial reaction to getting that money was of shame and I even felt offended. Then I thought he just wanted to thank me, the best way he knew how. Now, my question is—what act of kindness shall I do with these 100 dollars?
25.Why was the man sitting on the subway station's floor?
A.Because he wanted to go home. B.Because he was seriously ill.
C.Because he was drunk. D.Because he was waiting for the train.
26.Seeing the money left by the man, the author first felt ________.

27.How will the author possibly deal with the money?
A.Give it back. B.Buy something favorable.
C.Leave it on the seat. D.Give it to people in need.
28.What can we infer from the passage?
A.I helped the man the moment I saw him. B.I accompanied the man to take the stairs.
C.I thought it unsafe to go alone with the drunken man at first.
D.A young woman ran after me and gave me the note.

It's cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.
According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill (跑步机), burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate (调节) its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures—and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.
Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in the summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.
Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, stroke, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust (尾气), and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.
29.How does cold weather benefit runners, compared with warm weather?
A.They can run more slowly. B.They can take in more calories.
C.Their hearts can function harder. D.Their body temperature can get lower.
30.How does summer affect runners?
A.It builds up their energy quickly. B.It makes runners tired easily.
C.It lessens runners' stress. D.It causes heart attack.
31.What are the runners supposed to do on smoggy days?
A.Stop driving cars. B.Do more exercise.
C.Avoid outdoor exercise. D.Run late in the morning.
32.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Refresh with a Winter Run B.Take Outdoor Exercise in Summer
C.Go to Run in a Park D.Follow the Tips to Reduce Stress
D
When I was watching a sports event yesterday, I met with an amazing sight. It was not a gold medal, or a world record broken, but a show of pure courage and determination.
The event was swimming. I watched a man dive off the blocks and knew right away that something was wrong. I'm not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold——his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle.
I heard the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes (划水) and you could tell he was worn out. But in those few awkward strokes, the crowd changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and yell things like, “Come on, you can do it!” He did. The crowd went wild.
Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to take part in the event. Even though he recorded the slowest time, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors——a man that gave his all, knowing that he had no chance but to compete because of the spirit of the games.
33.We know from the passage that the swimmer ________.
A.was not professional B.had two competitors C.had a wrong start D.didn't try his best
34.What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?
A.The swimmer lost his spirit B.The swimmer didn't finish his match.
C.The audience was touched deeply by the swimmer.
D.The crowd supported the swimmer from the beginning.
35.The author's attitude towards the swimmer is that of ________.
A.tolerance B disappointment C.carelessness D.admiration
七选五 How to protect your ears
You and your friends are leaving a concert on a Friday night. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard.__36__ So no harm done...right?
Not quite.Temporary buzzing may be easy to ignore, but repeated exposure to loud noise will eventually cause serious—and irreversible(不能治愈的)—hearing loss.A new study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston shows that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 19 are experiencing slight hearing loss, and one in 20 have mild hearing loss.__37__ But the good news is that there are plenty of ways you can protect your ears from further damage—and still listen to the music you love.

Buy noisecanceling headphones. A pair of earbuds or headphones that fits comfortably will limit outside noise so that you can hear your music better at lower volume.
Take breaks. __39__ So when listening to music, take your headphones off for 15 or 20 minutes and let your ears enjoy the quiet.
__40__ You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts—or while playing or practicing your own music—without changing the quality of the sound.
A.Use earplugs. B.Keep the volume below 70 percent.
C.If the answer is yes, your music is too loud.
D.But by morning, your hearing is totally back to normal.
E.Like every other part of your body, your ears need rest.
F.Unfortunately, there's no way to get back hearing you've already lost.
G.The exposure to noise is louder and longer than in any previous generation.
