For this year’s Children’s Day on June 1, Deng Mo and his wife drove their son to the city of Suzhou, about 100 kilometers from Shanghai, where the family lives. Many parents similarly spent the weekend with their children, according to major online travel agency Ctrip (携程). Over 70 percent of parents traveling with children chose short-distance tours, and more than 80 percent took high-speed railways or drove.
Family-friendly tours account for up to 60 percent of domestic and overseas travel, a China Tourism Academy survey says. More than 80 percent of respondents believe traveling with children can bring joy to the whole family, and 96 percent express interest in such tours.
Deng has previously taken his son to Japan and Thailand. “It wasn’t easy to travel with a 3-year-old,” Deng said. “He had a lot of luggage─ more than we did.” During their vacation in Japan, for example, his son fell sick, and the parents had to stay in the hotel for a whole day. Still, Deng hopes such tours will broaden his boy’s horizons.
Many parents regard such trips as educational. Shanghai-based online travel agency Lvmama (驴妈妈旅游网) reports that bookings for tours involving museums increased by 45 percent year-on-year (与去年同期数字相比) in the first four months of 2019.
Shanghai resident Ji Hongjuan enjoys taking her 12-year-old daughter, Wen Lan, to China’s historical sites and museums. Our preference for this or that kind of music is obviously a subjective (主观的、个人的) matter. It can also be highly unstable (不稳定的) , changing not only during a lifetime, but even on a scale of months, or even days. Yet despite such variety, there are three factors that I think are the main contributors (因素).
The first is how we were brought up, or the musical background which surrounded us in our formative years (性格形成时期). The kinds of music that we were exposed to when we were small helped to create very specific mental patterns.
However, even the most stable musical pattern can be changed by socio-cultural concerns, and these form the second contribution to our musical preferences. Music, probably from the very beginning of the existence of modern humans, has been used to bring people together in various kinds of activities, because it is really efficient at regulating (调节) the bodily and emotional responses of large groups of participants. Whether you’re into heavy metal, or hip hop, or jazz, your preferences are guided in part by your desire to be a member of some social circle.
These two factors seem to suggest that musical preferences are formed unconsciously, without the listener being aware of it, but this is obviously not the case. Nothing is likely to be more important than our own subjective feeling at the time of listening. Especially today, with nearly unlimited access to all styles of music, we use music as a tool for regulating our emotions and moods. This is why when you want to study you might reach for something simple, without words. Or when you’re trying to relax before bed you’ll probably listen to something calming. They point to the fantastic power of music in our lives.

W: Yeah, I’m trying to work some exercise into my daily life.
M: Good idea! I started cycling to work instead of driving for the same reason.

M: Hello, Suzy. It’s Mike. I’m just calling to see if you’re free for dinner next Saturday, the ninth, or the Saturday after, the sixteenth.
W: Next Saturday is fine.

M: So, could you describe Mr. Jones for me please, madam?
W: Well, he’s about 45 years old and tall with brown hair and blue eyes. He’s got large ears and wears glasses.

W: Look at this painting. It’s so peaceful and the colors are so rich.
M: But it makes me sleepy just looking at it. Because I’ve never taken a liking to the water painting.

W: Who’s that man with long hair in the picture?
M: It’s my brother. He has played the guitar for 10 years. He even has his own band called The Swingers, and they just produced their CD.
W: Really? A talented young man!

W: Tom, I’ve ordered a coffee for you. I know you like Cappuccino.
M: Thank you. Now here are those cards I bought for you in Oxford, to add to your collection. I hope you don’t think they’re in bad condition-they must be fifty years old…
W: Thanks. The condition they’re in doesn’t bother me. And actually, looking at the stamps. They’re older than you say, which is excellent because I haven’t got many from the 1930s.

M: Thank goodness it’s Friday. I’m so tired.
W: Me too-it’s been a hard week at work.
M: What about going out somewhere to eat? We seldom eat out after we got married.
W: Great! I’m too tired to cook tonight. Anyway, I don’t think there’s much in the fridge.
M: How about that Italian restaurant, you know, Gianni’s? Their pizzas are delicious.
W: I know, but it’s always full at weekends, and you have to wait ages for a table. It’s just too popular!
M: Then let’s get some fish’n’chips and eat in front of the TV!
W: Yes, we can be really lazy.

M: Hello, everyone. I’m going to tell you about an exciting geography project we’re going to do this year. It’s going to be about a bridge called Tallworth Bridge.
There are two bridges in Tallworth. The new bridge was built in 1956 but the one we’re going to see, the old bridge, has been there since 1832. The person who paid for the bridge wasn’t the famous engineer who built it but a farmer. He needed to get his sheep safely across a river to another field.
We’re going to visit the bridge next week. A camera is necessary so you can take pictures for your project. And we’ll return before lunchtime so you don’t need food or a drink. Do you have any questions?
