My First Marathon (马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. However, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first PE class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签). I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.
24. A month before the marathon, the author .

C. To show he was not talented in sports.
D. To share a precious memory.
26. How was the author’s first marathon?
A. He made it.
B. He quit halfway.
C. He got the first prize.
D. He walked to the end.
27. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. A man owes his success to his family support.
B. A winner is one with a great effort of will.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. One is never too old to learn.
C
Your house may have an effect on your figure(身材). Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turning on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) increases by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
28. The text is especially helpful for those who care about .
A. their home comforts B. their body shape
C. house buying D. healthy diets
29. A home environment in blue can help people .
A. digest food better B. reduce food intake
C. burn more calories D. regain their appetites
30. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast music.
C. Use smaller spoons. D. Turn down the lights.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Your House Making You Fat?
B. Ways of Serving Dinner
C. Effects of Self-Consciousness
D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?
D
As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric (生物测量) technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces. At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.
Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device (装置) that gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence (节奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user’s typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people’s identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it’s connected to—regardless of whether someone gets the password right.
It also doesn’t require a new type of technology that people aren’t already familiar with. Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.
In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word “touch” four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.
32. Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard?
A. To reduce pressure on keys.
B. To improve accuracy in typing.
C. To replace the password system.
D. To cut the cost of e-space protection.
33. What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible?
A. Computers are much easier to operate.
B. Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.
C. Typing patterns vary from person to person.
D. Data security measures are guaranteed.
34. What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard?
A. It’ll be environment-friendly.
B. It’ll reach consumers(消费者) soon.
C. It’ll be made of plastics.
D. It’ll help speed up typing.
35. Where is this passage most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.

It feels good to buy gifts for others. So what’s the best way to manage your money wisely and smartly this holiday season? Susan Beacham has recently given kids some money management skills.
“My first tip is to make a list and check it twice. Start by writing down the persons to whom you want to give gifts,” says Beacham. “Then put the amount of money next to each name and add up. 36 If not, make changes.”
Take the list with you to the store.“ 37 If you’ve just spent $30 on someone you had planned to spend $25 on, you’re going to have to spend $5 less on somebody else,” says Beacham. The key is staying within the limits you’ve set for yourself.
How to get the best deals? Don't go to the supermarkets. 38 Things sold there often cost less than those at traditional stores. “You’ll also be able to get a lot more choices,” says Beacham.
39 Beacham points out that some of the best presents are free. They are gifts from the heart. “Kids can give ‘time or talent’,” says Susan Beacham. For parents, write a note telling them how special they are to you. For a friend, you may just create a work of art, like a poem or a drawing. For people in your community, show that you care about them by volunteering. 40 Giving your time to help others may end up being the best gift of all!
A. Shop online instead.
B. Do you have enough money?
C. Choose gifts with practical value.
D. Make sure that you do the maths.
E. Find out who needs your help and what you can do.

for you.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque,a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul,my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning,Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast,I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草).I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon,I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes,as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So,my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,”Uncle Paul cried,“and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Dad and I found it was so cute that we decided to chase it. After a while, we got completely lost in the forest. There was nothing left in our sight but the trees. “We may not be able to make it back to the farm house in time for supper. ”I thought to myself. After a series of fruitless attempts to find a way out,we felt hungry and tired.
Paragraph 2:
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. We got stuck in the forest. And an unexpected shower added to the difficulty of us in finding a way home, for all the tracks we had made disappeared because of the rain. I was almost on the edge of breaking down when my father said,“Don’t worry, my son. I remember there is a river near the farm house. Find the river and we will be back home.” Finally,we found the river and got back to the house along it. Needless to say,we ate a late dinner.

W: I suppose I should. I don’t like driving in dangerous weather conditions. Do you have any plans for tomorrow?
M: I just have to go to class tomorrow afternoon.

M: That depends. Some semesters have many, some don’t. And some courses don’t have exams but only ask for papers.
W: And when do you prepare for your final exam?
M: Well, most students prepare it one month before the exam.
W: Does it work?
M: Of course, it’s useful. And it’s very important to have the copies of teacher’s notes, because most exam questions are based on them. But we still have to stay up late.
W: Do you have the classrooms open for the whole night?
M: Yes, some people even sleep there. That’s a little bit crazy.

Through the foundation, Rihanna also built a cancer treatment center in Barbados and set up projects to help developing areas better prepare for natural disasters.
