In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they've done this already in the middle school, it's still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.
One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications. The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.
What's more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.
    24. How do most students feel when entering the high school?
    A. Nervous. B. Excited. C. Lonely. D. Disappointed.
    25. What can we know about the school clubs?
    A. There are fewer students from higher grades in the school clubs.
    B. The school clubs in high school only welcome sports fans.
    C. The school office can help new students join school clubs.
    D. Their summer activities begin before school starts.
    26. When do many schools take students to visit their new high school?
    A. Before the eighth grade year starts.
    B. At the end of their eighth grade year.
    C. Right after the high school year starts.
    D. At the beginning of the new term in the high school.
    27. What is the purpose of this text?
    A. To tell the new students how to learn in high school.
    B. To give advice to new high school students.
    C. To give the teachers some advice.
    D. To introduce new schools.
    C
Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. "It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone." Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. "The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person," said the 30-year-old man.
Richardson describes traveling alone like "a shot in the arm", which "makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything". He said, "The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I'm dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try."
The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, "Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness."
    28. Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?
    A. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.
    B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.
    C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.
    D. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.
    29. Why is traveling alone challenging?
    A. It will finally build your character.
    B. You have to make things on your own.
    C. It is hard for you to prove yourself to others.
    D. You can only depend on yourself whatever happens.
    30. What can we infer about Chris Richardson?
    A. He started traveling alone at an early age. B. He used to work as a salesman.
    C. He was once shot in the arm. D. His website inspires others a lot.
    31. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. Travel Abroad. B. Travel Light. C. Travel Alone. D. Travel Wide and Far.
    D
Some of the greatest problems we face today are the destruction (破坏) of our environment. Brown clouds, polluted water, endangered wild animals..., these problems seem so huge.
So my family does what we can. We take cloth bags to stores instead of using plastic bags. We walk where we don't have to drive...
But does it do any good? When I am the only one in line at the market with cloth bags, am I doing any good? Does my walking to stores make any real difference to the world?
I recently learned something about flamingos (火烈鸟) which like to get together in groups of a thousand or more. Every year when the time comes for migration (迁徙), a few of them first take off from the lake. But none of the others seem to notice, so the small group returns. However, the next day they try again. This time a few more fly along with them, but most of them still pay no attention, so they return again. They try for several times. Every time a few more birds join in but, since the thousands of others still take no notice, the great migration plan is once more stopped.
Then one day something changes. The same small group of birds once again starts flying and a small number more join in just as before, then more. Finally, they all take flight and the migration really begins. What a spectacular sight it must be — thousands of flamingos taking off into the sky at once!
A few can make a difference. Even if you're the one to take the first step, and continue trying, others will someday take notice and together we will solve even our greatest problems.
    32. Where would you most probably read this passage?
    A. A guidebook. B. A movie poster.
    C. An animal magazine. D. A personal blog
    33. Why does the writer use cloth bags in stores?
    A. There are only cloth bags in stores. B. All the people use cloth bags in stores.
    C. He thinks plastic bags are more expensive. D. He wants to do some good to the environment.
    34. What does the underlined word "spectacular" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A. Disappointing. B. Fantastic. C. Terrible D. Surprising
    35. What's the writer's purpose of writing this article?
    A. To show that the writer loves to see the migration of flamingos.
    B. To tell readers to continue trying and it can make a difference.
    C. To introduce a special kind of flamingo to readers.
    D. To show that there're many problems in the world.
    第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分)
    根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中两项为多余选项。
Study Habits You Should Be Practicing
With exams, essays, projects, and many deadlines for different things, effective study habits are necessary. 36 If you are in need of a bit of an improvement, keep reading for the top four study habits that you should be practicing.
    Make and use flashcards (抽认卡).
37 By using flashcards with a question on one side and the answer on the other, you will force your brain to recall the necessary information. Even if you struggle a bit with a card, you will still be actively revising the necessary material.
    Revise revise, revise!
Many students put off studying until just before the exam, with the more hardworking students giving themselves a week or two before a test. 38 It's best to revise the information a little bit every day, so that you are not upset when a test comes around.
    39
One of the most effective and the most fun methods of studying is to watch related lectures and videos in order to get more material. Watch documentaries or videos on You Tube and educational websites. You may be surprised at how much you can learn from videos, and just how much information is available online.
    Re-write your notes.
Studies have shown that writing information out by hand increases your ability to remember the material. This makes the recall go hand-in-hand with muscle memory. 40
These are the four most effective study habits, and something all successful students do. Make sure you are on top of your game by following these study methods!
    A. Watch related lectures and videos.
    B. One method of revising is to make a mind-map.
    C. Use these graded tests to create a new practice test.
    D. Having these great study habits can make things easier.
    E. However, it's actually an ineffective method of preparing and studying.
    F. Flashcards are designed to improve active memory recall of information.
    G. You will be able to picture your written notes when you are taking the exam.
