Success is tugh wrk, and it requires bearing the cst f lsing. Unfrtunately, success is endless. The gal can’t be satisfied; mst peple never feel successful enugh. The high nly lasts a day r tw, and then it’s n t the next gal. Psychlgists call this the hednic treadmill(快乐跑步机现象), in which satisfactin wears ff almst immediately and we must run n t the next reward t avid the feeling f falling behind.

Fr peple hked n substances, withdrawal can be a painful experience, bth physically and psychlgically, research finds that depressin and anxiety are cmmn amng utstanding athletes after their careers end. Fr several decades, there has been an rganized campaign intended t prduce distrust in science, funded by thse whse interests are threatened by the findings f mdern science. In respnse, scientists have tended t stress the success f science. After all, scientists have been right abut mst things, frm the structure f the universe t the relativity f time and space.
Stressing successes isn’t wrng, but fr many peple it’s nt persuasive. An alternative answer t the questin “Why trust science?” is that scientists use the s-called scientific methd. But what is called the scientific methd isn’t what scientists actually d. Science is dynamic: new methds get invented; ld nes get abandned; and at any particular pint, scientists can be fund ding many different things. False theries smetimes lead t true results, s even if an experiment wrks, it desn’t prve that the thery it was designed t test is true.
If there is n specific scientific methd, then what is the basis fr trust in science? The answer is the methds by which thse claims are evaluated. A scientific claim is never accepted as true until it has gne thrugh a lng prcess f examinatin by fellw scientists. Scientists draft the initial versin f a paper and then send it t clleagues fr suggestins. Until this pint, scientific feedback is typically fairly friendly. But the next step is different: the revised paper is submitted t a scientific jurnal, where things get a whle lt tugher. Editrs deliberately send scientific papers t peple wh are nt friends r clleagues f the authrs, and the jb f the reviewer is t find errrs r ther faults. We call this prcess “peer review” because the reviewers are scientific peers—experts in the same field—but they act in the rle f a superir wh has bth the right and the respnsibility t find fault. It is nly after the reviewers and the editr are satisfied that any prblems have been fixed that the paper will be printed in the jurnal and enters the bdy f “science.”
Sme peple argue that we shuld nt trust science because scientists are “always changing their minds.” While examples f truly settled science being verturned are far fewer than is smetimes claimed, they d exist. But the beauty f this scientific prcess is that science prduces bth creativity and stability. New bservatins, ideas, explanatins and attempts t cmbine cmpeting claims intrduce creativity; transfrmative questining leads t cllective decisins and the stability f scientific knwledge. Scientists d change their minds in the face f new evidence, but this is a strength f science, nt a weakness.
28. Scientists stress the success f science in rder t ______.
A. prmte basic knwledge f scienceB. remind peple f scientific achievements
C. remve pssible dubts abut scienceD. shw their attitude twards the campaign
29. What can we learn abut the s-called scientific methd?
A. It’s an easy jb t prve its existence.B. It usually agrees with scientists’ ideas.
C. It hardly gets mixed with false theries.D. It cnstantly changes and prgresses.
30. What can we learn abut “peer” review?
A. It seldm gives negative evaluatin f a paper.
B. It is usually cnducted by unfriendly experts.
C. It aims t perfect the paper t be published.
D. It happens at the beginning f the evaluatin prcess.
31. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph implies that ______.
A. it is nt uncmmn fr science t be verturned
B. scientists are very strng in changing their minds
C. peple lse faith in thse changeable scientists
D. changes bring creativity and stability t science

Sme bats sing just as birds and humans d. But hw they learn their calls and meldies is a mystery-ne that scientists will try t slve by researching the genes f mre than 1,000 bat species.
The prject, called Bat 1K, was annunced n 14 Nvember at the annual meeting f the Sciety fr Neurscience in San Dieg, Califrnia. Its rganizers als hpe t learn mre abut the flying mammals’ echlcatin ability—the ability t find directins in the dark; their strng immune systems that can defend against Ebla, a deadly virus; and their relatively lng lifespans.
“The genmes f all these ther species, like birds and mice, are well-understd,” says an expert at the Max Planck Institute fr Psychlinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. “But we dn’t knw anything abut bat genes yet.”
Sme bats shw babbling behavir, including barks, chatter, screeches, whistles and trills, says Mirjam Knörnschild, a behaviral eclgist at the Free University f Berlin. Yung bats learn the sngs and ther sunds frm lder male tutrs. They use these sunds during curtship and mating, when they seek fd and as they defend their territry against rivals.
Scientists have studied the vcal sunds f nly abut 50 bat species s far, Knörnschild says, and they knw much less abut bats’ cmmunicatin than birds’. Fur species f bat have s far been fund t learn vcal sunds frm each ther, their fathers and ther adult males, just as a child gradually learns hw t speak frm its parents.
Genetic studies have discvered at least ne gene in bats that is linked t speech and language, called FOXP2. The gene is als knwn t have a rle in hw peple learn language, and in vcal learning in sng-birds. Researchers wrking n the Bat 1K prject expect t find that ther genes are als invlved in cmmunicatin, and that many mre bat species have the ability t learn sngs, calls and ther sunds. “It’s nt a rare trait,” Knörnschild says. “I’m becming cnvinced that all bats are mre r less the same in vcal learning.”
Bats’ echlcatin ability has been studied fr many years, partly because f its applicatins t snar and radar. But scientists knw very little abut the vcal cmmunicatin and scial behaviur that drive hw bats learn their sngs and sunds, says Michael Yartsev, a neurbilgist at University f Califrnia, Berkeley. The study f vcal learning in bats is “nearly cmpletely untapped”, he says—cmparing it t the state f research int birdsng 60 years ag.
32. The prject, Bat 1K is carried ut mainly t ______.
A. d research n the genes f mre bat species
B. research bats’ ability t find directins in the dark
C. study the way bats learn their calls and sngs
D. learn mre secrets abut bats’ lnger lifespans
33. Frm Para 5 and 6, we can safely infer that ______.
A. scientists have studied nly apprximately 50 bat species s far
B. f all bats, nly fur species learn vcal sunds frm each ther
C. mre than ne gene linked t speech and language has been discvered
D. the gene FOXP2 has smething t d with human language learning
34. Which f the fllwing is the wrd “trait” in Paragraph 6 clsest t in meaning?
A. qualityB. behavirC. habitD. gene
35. What’s the main idea f the passage?
A. Scientists try t knw mre abut bat genes.
B. Scientists seek keys t bats’ vcal sunds.
C. All bats are almst the same in vcal learning.
D. Bats sing just as birds and human beings d.

38 Fr example, newbrn fish are mistaking tiny bits f plastic waste fr fd. If they die, there will be fewer big fish—and that culd damage the fd chain. Often ur sciety is s fcused n making ur lives mre cnvenient in the shrt term, but in the lng run, ur health and the health f marine life are at the expense f thse everyday cnveniences.”
39 A recent reprt suggests that when heated, certain fd additives (添加剂) can damage hrmnes, grwth and develpment, as well as increase chances fr children f being fat. 40 It is fund in plastic cntainers and metal cans.
