I lve persimmns(柿子). The sweet, bright range fruit indicates the cming f autumn in Iran, where I grew up. Persimmns can’t grw just anywhere, but they d grw in Califrnia, where I nw live. A few years ag, preparing t travel frm San Francisc t Bstn, I packed tw persimmns, ne f which I ate in the departure hall, waiting fr barding.
At this pint, a lady came up, asking where the fruit was purchased. She lked a bit disappinted when hearing it culdn’t be gained at the airprt and returned t her seat n the ther end f the hall. “I can give the secnd persimmn away”, I thught t myself. When I ffered her the fruit, she at first ppsed, but when I insisted, she was visibly glad and appreciatively accepted. I went back t my seat, happy t have made smene else happy, and that, as far as I was cncerned, was the end f the stry.
Smetime during the flight, the lady caught up with me t thank me again. She shared that she had grwn up in Japan, where there was a persimmn tree in the yard f her childhd hme. She nw lived in Bstn, where she hadn’t been able t find the fruit. The taste f this persimmn was precius t her, recnnecting her with memries f her relatives.
Only then did the impact f this tiny act f genersity dawn n me. I am s mved t this day that the taste f the persimmn I never ate gives me mre jy than all the nes I have eaten, cmbined.
My experience is nt unique. Research has shwn that acts f genersity fr thers make us happier than treating urselves. A 2008 study by Harvard Business Schl prfessr Michael Nrtn and clleagues fund that despite participants’ predictins t the cntrary, giving mney t smene else increased their wn happiness mre than spending it n themselves.

PARKINSON’S DISEASE is a prgressive disrder caused by the deaths f neurns(神经元) in parts f the brain. Symptms include lss f mtr cntrl, md disturbance and ruined sleep. Althugh it is incurable, early medical treatment can, hwever, relieve these symptms and lengthen survival.
Unfrtunately, the early signs f Parkinsn’s vary frm persn t persn and there is n specific test at the early stage. A study published in ACS Omega, by Chen Xing and Liu Jun at Zhejiang University, in China, describes an inventin which may be able t detect Parkinsn’s befre the beginning f the symptms. The device in questin is an artificially intelligent electrnic nse.
The tw researchers set abut building this nse in 2019. That was when they heard reprts f Jy Milne, a nurse, wh culd detect peple with Parkinsn’s frm a distinctive smell they gave ff. Researchers wrking with her fund that the sebum(皮脂) f thse with Parkinsn’s has unusually high level f certain cmpunds. When these are acted n by cells which live naturally n the skin, the result is the mysterius smell.
This can be detected using a labratry technique called GCMS, which is prmising. Unfrtunately, it is still t cmplex and expensive t be used daily in clinics. Hwever, Dr. Chen and Dr. Liu invent a machine nt much bigger than a taster. It turns a sample f sebum int a steam that is then detected with sund waves. Different mixtures have different effects n the waves, and, with a bit f training, a cmputer laded with an apprpriate piece f artificial intelligence can learn t recgnize the pattern assciated with sebum frm Parkinsn’s patients.
The researchers tested their system n samples frm 43 peple with Parkinsn’s disease and 44 wh were healthy. They fund it culd crrectly identify a Parkinsn’s patient as having the disease abut 70%. That is nt yet as gd as Mrs. Milne’s nse. If its reliability can be imprved, its ptential cheapness f the system may eventually prve an advantage fr the early diagnsis f the illness.
    8. Why d the researchers develp the intelligent electrnic nse?
    A. T aid early diagnsis.
    B. T cut the cst f curing.
    C. T ffer medical treatment.
    D. T replace frmer detecting ways.
    9. What is the key factr in making the intelligent electrnic nse?
    A. Jy Milne’s wrking ability.
    B. The distinctive smell f the neurns.
    C. The cncentratin f certain cmpunds.
    D. The test abut the peple with Parkinsn’s.
    10. What des the 4th paragraph mainly tell us abut the inventin?
    A. Its inspiratin.B. Its imprtance.
    C. Its disadvantages.D. Its wrking principles.
    11. Where is this text mst likely frm?
    A. A wrk recrd. B. A science magazine.
    C. A health guidebk.D. An advertising brchure.
    D
Althugh it may be uncmfrtable t admit, many parents play favrites amng their children. Is that “bad” parenting? Having a favrite child might be the greatest tab(禁忌) f parenthd, yet research shws that the majrity f parents d indeed have a favrite.
With plenty f evidence t suggest that being the least-favred child can fundamentally shape the persnality and lead t sibling(兄弟姐妹) cmpetitins, it’s n wnder that parents might wrry abut letting their preferences slip.
“Data suggests that mthers, in particular, shw favritism t children wh have similar values t them and that engage mre with family, ver qualities such as being highly ambitius r career driven.” says Jessica Griffin, an assciate prfessr at the University f Massachusetts.
In ne study, up t 74% f mthers and 70% f fathers in the UK have been shwn t exhibit preferential treatment twards ne child. Parents admitting having a favrite child shwed an verwhelming preference twards the baby f the family, with 62% f parents wh have several children preferring their yungest. Griffin says that a favritism twards a yungest child is ften t d with the scial and emtinal skills assciated with birth rder — as parents gain mre practice in child-raising, they have a better idea f hw they want t shape the childhd f the children, and what qualities are mst imprtant t pass n.
“Children wh grw up in families where they feel that they are treated unfairly may experience a deep sense f unwrthiness,” says Griffin. “They might feel that they are unlvable in sme way. But fr mst parents, their wrries are misplaced. In fact, in mst cases children might nt even knw that their parents prefer their sibling in the first place. In ne study, a shcking fur ut f five claimed that their sibling was favred ver them — a seemingly imprbable statistic.
Griffin argues that it’s perfectly OK fr parents t have favrites. “The imprtant thing t remember is that having a favrite child des nt mean that yu lve yur ther children less.” Griffin says.
    12. What des the underlined wrd “slip” in secnd paragraph mean?
    A. Cause truble.B. Make n difference.
    C. Bring benefits.D. Becme bvius.
    13. Why wuld mst parents shw favritism t the yungest?
    A. Their scial skills are much better.
    B. They want t pass n mre knwledge t it.
    C. Their childhd experience gives them mre ideas.
    D. They have learned mre abut hw t raise a child.
    14. Hw will the children act when they are treated unfairly?
    A. Cmpete with each ther.B. Turn a deaf ear t it.
    C. Becme self-denying. D. Be annying.
    15. What’s Griffin’s attitude twards parents’ favrites amng children?
    A. Uncertain.B. Objective.C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
