The bear is right behind us! ” An aggressive(好斗的)bear will usually rush frward t frighten away its enemy but wuld suddenly stp at the last minute. This ne was silent and its ears pinned back—the sign f an animal that is ging in fr the kill. And it was a cld April day. The bear behaved abnrmally, prbably because f hunger.
I held my camera tripd (三脚架) in bth hands t frm a barrier as the bear rushed int me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shulders, and the tripd stuck acrss its muth. It bit dwn and I fund myself supprting its weight. I knew I wuld nt be able t hld it fr lng.
Even s, this was a fight I had t win: I was all that std between the bear and my family, wh wuld stand little chance f running faster than a brwn bear.
The bear hit at the camera, cutting it ff the tripd. I raised my left arm t prtect my face; the beast held tightly n the tripd and pressed it int my side. My arm culd nt mve, and I sensed that my bnes were ging t break.
Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I culd fr five t six times. The bear pened its muth and I grasped its fur, trying t push it away. I was actually wrestling (扭打) with the bear at this pint. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear mved back tward the frest, befre returning fr anther attack—the first time I felt panic.
Obviusly satisfied that we caused n further threat, the bear mved ff, destrying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the utcme fr us culd hardly have been better. I’m prud that my family remained clear-headed when panic culd have led t a very different utcme.
