A yearbook is a tradition of high school life in the United States. The book includes the name, photo, and signature(签名) of each student in your final year, so that you can remember who you went to school with. A 15-year-old girl Catherine Cook and her brother David wanted more than this. They thought, “Why not have a yearbook online? You could learn about people’s music tastes, the movies they like, and so on.”
Catherine thought of the name−−myYearbook.com, and the logo(标志). To advertise the website, Catherine and David wore T-shirts with the website logo to school and soon hundreds of their schoolmates became fans of the website. She spent many evenings talking on the phone to programmers in India, and collecting ideas from her schoolmates. Then her older brother Geoff came up with the money to start up the website.
My Yearbook users can join in the fun by sending messages and “collecting” friends. They can watch the same videos from films and TV programs, and share music, photos, homework and study guides. Some teens feel they can make friends easily online. Chatting online helps some shy people not to feel left out.
Users can also make “Lunch Money” by doing activities on the website. They can then spend their Lunch Money on gifts, or donate it to charities. They have saved 0.3 km² of rainforest, cleaned up million kg of CO₂, sent 22,000 books to Africa, and bought 20,000 kg of rice for people without enough food.

Once upon a time, people could not write and they had no books. But they had stories.
The ancient Egyptians wrote their stories on flat sheets made from papyrus(纸莎草) plants. They glued many papyrus sheets together to make one long strip(条). Then they rolled the strip around a stick to make a scroll. People in other areas also used parchment(羊皮纸) instead.
In ancient China, books looked a little different. People there first carved(雕刻) words into bone or tortoise shell(龟壳). Later they used ink to write on strips of bamboo or silk. Then the Chinese invented(发明) paper. The first paper was made from waste cloth, but later plant materials were also used. The invention spread slowly across the world, reaching Europe in the 1100s. Then people used paper to make early books.
But all these early books still had one big problem. Every single book had to be copied out by hand. If there were pictures, each page had to be painted by hand, one at a time. This made books rare and expensive—though also very beautiful.
The Chinese were the first to think of a way to speed things up a little. In 1040, a man named Bi Sheng invented movable type printing(活字印刷). Movable type worked by carving a single Chinese word on a block of wood or clay. These could then be together with other words to create sentences, or whole pages.
In the 1400s Johannes Gutenberg of Germany invented a new way of printing. It used movable type—metal letters that could be arranged(排列) and rearranged to form words. It also used a machine called a press. Gutenberg’s inventions made printing became faster and easier.
As more books became easy to get, more people learnt to read. In the past, books were a luxury only the rich could buy. But with the printing press, they soon became a treasure everyone could enjoy.
( ) 56. What did the ancient Chinese first use as paper?
A. Papyrus sheets. B. Parchment.
C. Bone or tortoise shell. D. Strips of bamboo or silk.
( ) 57. Why were early books rare and expensive?
A. Because the invention of paper spread slowly across the world.
B. Because every book including pictures had to be copied out by hand.
C. Because ancient people didn’t have enough money to buy books.
D. Because people in ancient Europe didn’t invent paper like the Chinese.
( ) 58. Who invented the machine called a press?
A. The ancient Egyptians. B. The ancient Chinese.
C. Bi Sheng. D. Johannes Gutenberg.
( ) 59. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “luxury”?
A. something old B. something new
C. something expensive D. something cheap
( ) 60. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. The invention of parchment. B. The invention of paper.
C. The invention of movable type printing. D. The invention of Chinese words.

Do video games do harm to our children? Today, many children spend a lot of their free time playing games on the Internet. In the UK, 99% of kids aged 8 to 15 play video games every week. This information shows that we must carefully think about the good points and bad points of video games.
For many people, video games are fun. They have bright lights, funny cartoons and exciting stories. Everywhere you look, you can see children playing these games. They play on buses and trains, in restaurants and even at school.
Video games are educational too. They make kids think in a creative way and they have to move their hands and eyes quickly. This can improve the way that a child’s brain works. What’s more, video games make children use their imagination. The player has to do many creative things, like drawing, telling stories and building things. Video games are also a good way to teach children about technology(技术) because they can learn how computers and other devices work while they play.
However, a recent study suggests that video games can also be bad for children. First, children can download many games for free. This means that parents often don’t know if their children are playing violent(暴力的) or scary(恐怖的) games. Second, many children spend too much time playing games on computers and this can lead to health problems. Third, if children spend too much time playing games instead of doing homework, they can have problems at school and get bad grades. Finally, video games can influence children’s social skills. If children spend too much time playing video games by themselves, ▲
In a word, it seems clear that video games have some advantages(优点) and some disadvantages. It is up to parents to know what games their children are playing and how much time they spend on them. Parents should also make sure their children get enough exercise and spend time with other children.
( ) 61. The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A. kids B. computers C. video games D. parents
( ) 62. Which disadvantages of video games are mentioned in the passage?
a. result in bad grades
b. make kids feel bored
c. lead to health problems
d. influence children’s social skills
e. cause problems between parents and kids
A. c, d, e B. b, d, e C. a, c, d D. a, b, c
( ) 63. Which sentence may be the best to fill in the “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 4?
A. they might form violent characteristics.
B. they might have eye or weight problems.
C. they might not be able to pass the exams at school.
D. they might not know how to play with their friends.
( ) 64. What’s the structure(结构) of the passage?
( ) 65. Which of the following would the writer agree with?
A. Kids can play some violent or scary games for fun.
B. Parents should stop their kids from playing any video games.
C. Parents should make sure their kids spend all the time on schoolwork.
D. Kids can make a timetable for schoolwork, exercise, friends and video games.

We need to be duty for our environment. Being a frugal consumer(节约的消费者) is one way to help. But what does that really mean?
Use It Up
You can use things up instead of wasting them. Squeeze(挤压) that last bit of toothpaste out of the tube. Use the last little piece of soap. Don’t throw away any bits of the biscuit at the bottom of the box.
Wear It Out
You do not always need to have new things. When your trainers have broken laces(鞋带), but they still fit you, repair them and wear them longer. Don’t buy the latest iphone until the old one doesn’t work any more. Think twice before you buy a new one.
Make It Do
When something you want is not on hand, look for something else that you are ready to take its place. If you are packing your lunch for tomorrow and want a butter sandwich, and you are out of butter, have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese. Learn to fix broken toys instead of just throwing them away. With a little thought(思考), you can make something do, instead of buying something new.
Do Without
Think about all those things that you would like to have: Do you really need them? How long will you really play with that new toy you saw on TV? Making the things that we want uses up the world’s resources. And getting rid of(消除) the things we don’t want any more takes up even more resources and space.

During the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong asked the prime minister (宰相) Feng Deyi to recommend talented people. 86 , Feng didn’t recommend anyone after several months.
“I tried my best, but there are no 87 (usual) or well-rounded people at all,” Feng said.
“People are like tools,” said the emperor. “What we need to do is 88 (make) good use of their strengths. You should blame (归咎于) 89 (you)for not noticing people’s strengths. How could you say that there are no talented people in our dynasty?”
That’s true. Each tool has its own function (功能). A knife is made to cut things 90 chopsticks(筷子) are made to pick up food. We can’t use a knife as a chopstick. 91 a tool, each person has a special strength. Nobody is perfect. We can’t expect a person to be good at everything.
With this idea in mind, Emperor Taizong found many talented people of different 92 (background). He gave them important positions, which helped them make the most of their talents. His talented people helped the society develop and created a “golden age”.
A good example is Ma Zhou, who grew up in a poor family. Ma gave a lot of 93 (use) advice, so Emperor Taizong gave him a position and praised him many times.
If a person is talented in one field, we should give him a chance. 94 same idea can be found in the Analects of Confucius. Treating people as tools shows good leadership. President Xi Jinping once told this story to officers, 95 (ask) them to treat talented people correctly.

Hello, everyone! My name is Wang Tao. Jiangsu Provincial Games are coming. Many students want to be volunteers. What makes a good volunteer? I think we should have necessary qualities, key abilities and some related (相关的)knowledge.
Above all, we should have some necessary qualities. First, it’s important for volunteers to be kind and friendly. Second, we need to be patient enough to do our work one-to-one. Third, we should always be ready to help others at any time. Fourth, as a volunteer, we can’t be too careful to avoid making mistakes.
Also, we need to be good at some key abilities, such as team-work, communication and organizing abilities. As volunteers, we should learn how to work with team members. We’d better know how to communicate with different people. And we should be well organized and solve problems wisely because we may face some difficult situation.
What’s more, it’s necessary for volunteers to learn some related knowledge, like good manners, communication skills, first aid knowledge and knowledge of saving energy and protecting the environment.
In a word, any help would mean a lot. Being a good volunteer not only gets to help others but also improves ourselves.
Thank you for listening!
