For many years, Jenna Arcidiacono has made headlines for serving up all kinds of good deeds across West Michigan. Her latest effort to help local restaurants, called "Tip Back Thursday", is now making waves on social media.
Arcidiacono, the owner of Amore Trattoria Italiana, said she got the idea after her kids introduced her to Tik Tok. "I found a girl in Nashville who was doing crowdfunding to tip a server," she explained. "I want to start doing that here locally. However, instead of giving to one person, I'd like to bless a whole place. So we decided that we're just going to tip big for a whole staff."
With the community's support, the Tip Back Thursday movement has caught on, raising more than $20, 000 in just six weeks. Arcidiacono selects several local restaurants to bless each week with a big tip, usually of $1 ,000 or more.
"We've had a few who didn't even know what to say, because they're not expecting it," said Arcidiacono. "You don't know what someone else is going through or how much they're struggling, because they're going to smile at work and get through it."
Arcidiacono had to close Amore for several months at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her restaurant is still operating at limited capacity due to the latest state health order. "We've had a rough emotional year, financial year, and everything's been hard, so we 're just trying to keep our heads up," she said. "I struggled this year too, because I missed having people here, because that's what I love—I love having people to spoil (宠)."
Arcidiacono has no idea how long Tip Back Thursday will last, but she hopes it will continue. "I just feel so good when I get to give back to someone who is in the same position as I'm in. I would hope that if I were in that position, someone would do that for me."

After Hurricane Maria swept through Puerto Rico in 2017 and caused huge damage, researchers found rhesus macaques, a species of monkey living on Cayo Santiago, became more sociable with each other, according to a study published in the journal Current Biology.
"The monkeys live in a highly competitive society and can become aggressively protective over resources like food and water," said study author Camille Testard, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. "That's why researchers predicted that after the hurricane, the monkeys would stick with their closest friends in order to survive," Testard said. Instead, the island's residents became more tolerant of each other and greatly expanded their friend group.
"To measure the monkeys' socialization and friendship-building, researchers tracked who they groomed (梳毛), which is one of the ways monkeys bond with one another," Testard said. "It serves a similar function for us to getting coffee or a beer with friends," she added. After the hurricane, the "grooming networks" became denser, Testard said, meaning there were more connections being formed compared to the monkeys' behavior before the storm. The scientists found the animals made friends with friends of their friends, which she said is a common "easy" route to making friends that's mirrored in human social circles.
The researchers didn't know why the monkeys decided to make more friends, but Testard assumed it could be "a strategy to gain tolerance and support from the greatest number of individuals and thereby access to limited resources like shade."
The monkeys could be forming additional bonds to "buffer" them from future hardship from the natural disaster, said Brenda MeCowan, a professor of population health and reproduction, who was not involved in the study. She said the findings also provide an insight into how humans might cope with the increasing threat of climate crisis. "Rhesus macaques are close evolutionary relatives to humans and share many features of their biology and behavior with us, "said McCowan. "Our best friends can give us many things, but sometimes, what we need is a social network where everyone is just friendly enough."

Tasked with helping to make sure Utrecht's canals remain full of life, and convincing everyone it wasn't an April Fools' Day joke, two ecologists in the Dutch city have invented the world' s first "fish doorbell".
An underwater, live-streaming camera at the "Weerdsluis" lock door allows residents to ring a virtual doorbell which can be heard by the local lock keeper when they see that fish are trying to get through. A lock is a gate that raises or lowers canal boats into different levels of water separated by two doors, and a sluice is a small fish-sized door that allows water and fish to pass between them.
"You have to see the canal as a motorway for fishes. Sometimes you see literally dozens of fish floundering in front of the lock gate, so a fish jam is created," says underwater nature expert Mark Heukelum. "The Weerdsluis is the link between the Vecht and the Kromme Rijn. In winter the fish swim deeper, because it is warmer and safer there. In summer they want to go to shallow water so that they can reproduce," he adds.
Mark Heukelum came up with the doorbell idea while working with wildlife ecologist Anne Nijs on a project to highlight the biodiversity in Utrecht' s canals. At that time they noticed how the lock keeper Patrick opened the sluice to allow a large group of arriving fish to pass through.
Nijs says it's a great way to connect residents with their aquatic neighbors, and noted that when Mark took the idea to the municipality they were very excited. The only uncertainty was why they created a camera and a signal to Patrick when they could just install a motion-activated (动作感应的) sensor.
Mark Heukelum explains: "Technically that is probably possible, but this is of course much more fun. I am already addicted to it myself and watch it every night. You suddenly see a large pike swimming by or a lobster. It would be nice if you could spot a rarer fish such as a bindweed or bleak. Or maybe an eel."

Local police received a report at about 8 : 00 am, Tuesday of 12 whales spotted hundreds of meters from the shore in the city of Linhai, Zhejiang. It is not the fishing season in China, so the whales likely swam too close to the shore as there were no noisy boat engines and more food sources nearby, according to experts. The local fishery department, as well as the local people, rushed to the site to help with the rescue. Rescue efforts became harder because of the heat, the weight of the whales and their location far from the coast.
The rescuers dug holes for the whales and poured water over them. They also used wet towels to keep the animals wet, and put up sheds to protect them from the sun. Approximately 150 individuals participated in the rescue effort, which was finished at around 6 pm.

After Hurricane Maria swept through Puerto Rico in 2017 and caused huge damage, researchers found rhesus macaques, a species of monkey living on Cayo Santiago, became more sociable with each other, according to a study published in the journal Current Biology.
"The monkeys live in a highly competitive society and can become aggressively protective over resources like food and water," said study author Camille Testard, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. "That's why researchers predicted that after the hurricane, the monkeys would stick with their closest friends in order to survive," Testard said. Instead, the island's residents became more tolerant of each other and greatly expanded their friend group.
"To measure the monkeys' socialization and friendship-building, researchers tracked who they groomed (梳毛), which is one of the ways monkeys bond with one another," Testard said. After the hurricane, the "grooming networks" became denser, Testard said, meaning there were more connections being formed compared to the monkeys' behavior before the storm. The researchers didn't know why the monkeys decided to make more friends, but Testard assumed it could be "a strategy to gain tolerance and support from the greatest number of individuals and thereby access to limited resources like shade."
The monkeys could be forming additional bonds to "buffer" them from future hardship from the natural disaster, said Brenda MeCowan, a professor of population health and reproduction, who was not involved in the study. She said the findings also provide an insight into how humans might cope with the increasing threat of climate crisis. "Rhesus macaques are close evolutionary relatives to humans and share many features of their biology and behavior with us, "said McCowan. An underwater, live-streaming camera at the "Weerdsluis" lock door allows residents to ring a virtual doorbell which can be heard by the local lock keeper when they see that fish are trying to get through. A lock is a gate that raises or lowers canal boats into different levels of water separated by two doors, and a sluice is a small fish-sized door that allows water and fish to pass between them.
"You have to see the canal as a motorway for fishes. Sometimes you see literally dozens of fish floundering in front of the lock gate, so a fish jam is created," says underwater nature expert Mark Heukelum. "The Weerdsluis is the link between the Vecht and the Kromme Rijn. In winter the fish swim deeper, because it is warmer and safer there. In summer they want to go to shallow water so that they can reproduce," he adds.
Mark Heukelum came up with the doorbell idea while working with wildlife ecologist Anne Nijs on a project to highlight the biodiversity in Utrecht' s canals. At that time they noticed how the lock keeper Patrick opened the sluice to allow a large group of arriving fish to pass through.

I turned 19 on March 11, 2021. On the 24th day of the month, I landed in Nepal to summit (登顶) Mount Everest—the 46 point on Earth at 8,849 meters. I spent close to two months at Base Camp and took shorter treks (徒步旅行) up the mountain to 47 the conditions and the low-oxygen environment.
Base Camp sits at an elevation of 5, 364 meters, tall enough to cause 48 emergencies. The route is mostly a long, slow, technically 49 , oxygen-starved ascent (攀登). I was 50 at first, but I didn't rush as I moved around layers of 51 shifting, huge ice blocks.

It is not the fishing season in China, so the whales likely swam too close to the shore as there were no noisy boat engines and more food sources nearby, according to experts. The local fishery department, as well as the local people, rushed to the site to help with the rescue. Rescue efforts became harder because of the heat, the weight of the whales and their location far from the coast.
The rescuers dug holes for the whales and poured water over them. They also used wet towels to keep the animals wet, and put up sheds to protect them from the sun. Approximately 150 individuals participated in the rescue effort, which was finished at around 6 pm.
