Arrwsmith and his students lked at data frm a dzen seismmeters (地震仪) acrss Nrth Texas. Seismmeters are used t detect earthquakes, but they are sensitive t just abut everything that makes the grund vibrate, such as strng winds, cean waves, cnstructin and traffic.
The innvative idea f using seismmeters t track urban nise gained ppularity last March when Belgian seismlgist Thmas Leccq psted sme f his urban nise data frm Brussels n Twitter. Leccq, f the Ryal Observatry f Belgium, received such an enthusiastic respnse frm scientists that he launched the grup “Lckdwn Seismlgy” nline. “It’s where bred seismlgists arund the wrld are wrking tgether,” Arrwsmith jked.
Arrwsmith hpes his findings will cntribute t a grwing list f creative ways in which researchers are using seismmeters. In his curse, Arrwsmith teaches students hw seismic statins can help investigatrs slve crimes, like terrrist bmbings, aid scientists in tracking nuclear tests r assist inspectrs in investigating accidents, like chemical plant explsins. One ptential applicatin f his research is t better understand the shallw layers f Earth beneath cities. “That culd be useful in places where there’s a real seismic hazard, like San Francisc r Ls Angeles,” he said, “where just knwing what that shallw structure is tells yu a lt abut hw it wuld respnd in a big earthquake.”

Alchl was the leading risk factr fr disease and premature death in men and wmen between the ages f 15 and 49 wrldwide in 2016, accunting fr nearly ne in ten deaths, accrding t a study published in The Lancet in 2018. “It has been knwn fr decades that heavy drinking is bad fr brain health,” said Sadie Bniface, head f research at the UK’s Institute f Alchl Studies. While there is n such thing as a “safe” level f drinking, with increased cnsumptin f alchl assciated with prer brain health, accrding t a recent study.
In the bservatinal study, researchers frm the University f Oxfrd studied the relatinship between the self-reprted alchl intake f sme 25,000 peple in the UK, and their brain scans. The researchers nted that drinking had an effect n the brain’s gray matter—regins in the brain that make up “imprtant bits where infrmatin is prcessed,” accrding t lead authr Anya Tpiwala, a senir clinical researcher at Oxfrd.
“The mre peple drank, the less the vlume f their gray matter,” Tpiwala said via email. “Brain vlume reduces with age and mre severely with dementia (痴呆). Smaller brain vlume als predicts wrse perfrmance n memry testing,” she explained. “While alchl nly made a small cntributin t this (0.8%), it was a greater cntributin than ther ‘changeable’ risk factrs,” she said, explaining that changeable risk factrs are “nes yu can d smething abut, in cntrast t aging.”
The team als investigated whether certain drinking patterns, beverage types and ther health cnditins made a difference t the impact f alchl n brain health. They fund that there was n “safe” level f drinking—meaning that cnsuming any amunt f alchl was wrse than nt drinking it. They als fund n evidence that the type f drink—such as wine, spirits r beer—affected the harm dne t the brain.
Hwever, certain characteristics, such as high bld pressure r besity, culd put peple at higher risk, researchers added. S we shuldn’t frget alchl affects all parts f the bdy and there are multiple health risks.
    28. Hw was the bservatinal study develped?
    A. By cmparing brain and health.B. By cmparing peple and the researchers.

Sea stars can grw new arms. Crayfish can grw new claws. There are interesting creatures that can grw back bdy parts if accidents happen. Hwever, that is child’s play after what researchers saw a sea slug(海蛞蝓) d.
Accrding t a new discvery by Sayaka Mith and her clleagues f Nara Wmen’s University in Japan, tw species f sea slugs managed t lse their heads and then began crawling arund. Eventually, they grew an entirely new bdy. “We were surprised t see the head mving just after it was remved,” said Sayaka Mith. “We thught that it wuld die sn withut a heart and ther imprtant rgans, but we were surprised again t find that it regenerated the whle bdy.”
After the initial discvery, the researchers fund that fr yunger slugs, the detached heads began eating algae within hurs. The wund typically clsed at the back f the head within days. They started regrwing a heart within a week and the regeneratin f the entire bdy was finished after arund three weeks. Older slugs weren’t as frtunate. Often the heads didn’t feed, s they died in abut 10 days. Yung r ld, the headless bdies never generated a new head. But they did mve arund and respnd t being tuched fr several days and smetimes mnths after lsing their heads.
The researchers aren’t sure why the sea slugs drpped their heads r hw they’re able t grw new bdies. They may have parasites(寄生虫) that can hurt reprductin s they are remving their heads in rder t als remve the parasites. But the researchers aren’t sure what prmpts them t knw when t cast ff the bdy when they d it. Sayaka Mith says they believe there must be cells lcated in the neck that are similar t stem cells. These are able t regenerate a new bdy.
Hw the heads can survive withut a heart and ther vital rgans is anther puzzle. The researchers say these sea slugs fuel their bdies by phtsynthesis(光合作用). They rely n chlrplasts frm algae in their wn bdies when ther fd isn’t available, a prcess knwn as kleptplasty(盗食质体). They think this might help them survive lng enugh t regenerate a bdy.
“As the separated bdy is ften active fr mnths, we may be able t study the mechanism and functins f kleptplasty using living rgans, tissues, r even cells,” Sayaka Mith said. “Such studies are almst cmpletely lacking, as mst studies n kleptplasty in these animals are dne either at the genetic r individual levels.”
    32. What surprised Sayaka Mith and her clleagues?
    A. The sea slug culd regrw a new bdy.B. The sea slug culd remve its wn head.
    C. The sea slug culd survive withut xygen.D. The headless sea slug culd grw a new head.
    33. What happened t lder sea slugs after they lst their heads?
    A. Their heads survived by eating algae.B. They healed the wund within ten days.
    C. They lst their sense f tuch and died sn.D. Their bdies kept mving arund all the time.
    34. What may make sea slugs drp their heads accrding t researchers?
    A. T generate new stem cells.B. T get rid f parasites.
    C. T get away frm predatrs.D. T end their reprductive cycle.
    35. What is Paragraph 5 mainly abut?
    A. The prcess f sea slugs hunting fr fd.
    B. The imprtance f studying functins f kleptplasty.
    C. The cnditin fr sea slugs t perfrm phtsynthesis.
    D. The reasn fr sea slugs t survive the lss f their bdies.
