Having worked at a 7-Eleven store for two years, I thought I had become successful at what our manager calls “customer relations”. I firmly believed that a friendly smile and an automatic “ sir ” ,“ ma’ma ” , and “ thank you ” would see me through any situation that might arise, from comforting impatient or unpleasant people to apologizing for giving out the wrong change. But the other night an old woman shattered (粉碎) my belief that a simple and plain response could smooth over the rough spots of dealing with all kinds of customers.
The moment she entered, the woman presented a sharp contrast to our shiny store with its bright lighting and neatly arranged shelves. Walking as if each step were painful, she slowly pushed open the glass door and hobbled (蹒跚) down the nearest aisle. She coughed dryly, wheezing (气喘吁吁) with each breath. On a forty- degree night, she was wearing only a faded dress, a thin sweater too small to button, and black slippers with the backs cut out to expose calloused (满是老茧的) heels. There were no stockings or socks on her blue-veined legs.
After wandering around the store for several minutes, the old woman stopped in front of the rows of canned vegetables. She picked up a can of corn and stared with a strange intensity at the label. At that point, I decided to be a good, polite employee and asked her if she needed help. As I stood close to her, my smile became harder to maintain; her red-rimmed (边缘红的) eyes were partially closed by yellowish crusts (痂); her hands were covered with layer upon layer of dirt, and the stale (陈腐的) smell of sweat rose from clothes.
“ I need some food, ” she muttered (喃喃低语) in reply to my bright “ Can I help you? ”
“Are you looking for corn, ma’am? ”
“I need some food, ” she repeated, “ Any kind. ”
“Well, the corm is ninety-five cents, ” I said in my most helpful voice.
“I can’t pay, ” she said.
For a second, I was tempted to say, “ Take the corn. ” But the employee rules flooded into my mind: Remain polite, but do not let customers get the best of you. Let them know that you are in control. For a moment, I even entertained the idea that this was some sort of test, and that this woman was someone from the head office, testing my loyalty. I responded dutifully, “ I’m sorry, but I can’t give away anything for free. ”
The old woman’s face collapsed a bit more, and her hands trembled as she put the can back on the shelf. She shuffled (拖着脚走) past me toward the door, her torn and dirty clothing barely covering her bent back.
Moments after she left, I rushed out of the door with the can of corn, but she was nowhere in sight. For the rest of my shift, the image of the woman haunted (萦绕) me. I had been young, healthy and proud. She had been old, sick and desperate. Wishing with all my heart that I had acted like a human being rather than a robot, I was saddened to realize how weak a hold we have on our better instincts.

Researchers at MIT and in China developed a simple, solar-powered water desalination (脱盐) system. They have made a breakthrough in getting fresh drinking water from sea water by using sunlight.
As the research paper published in Energy & Environmental Science explains, equipment applied in this system includes several layers of flat evaporators (蒸发器) that turn water sources into fresh water through solar energy, as well as condensers (冷凝器) that cool the gas into the liquid. The authors of the paper are MIT students Lenan Zhang and Lin Zhao, Professor Evelyn Wang, and nine other researchers at MIT and at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.
How the system uses each of the multiple stages to remove salt from the water is critical to its efficiency. The heat released per stage will be used by the next stage. In this way, the team’s device can convert the energy of sunlight into the energy of water evaporation with an efficiency of 385 percent.
The device can be considered as a multilayer solar still. The heat is absorbed by its flat panels and then transferred to make water evaporate. The vapor then cools down and turns into liquid water on the next panel. As the water is collected, the released heat is transferred to the next layer.
The team’s 10-stage system produces pure water. Its quality is above the city drinking water standards. It also has the highest yield compared to other similar systems, at a rate of nearly six cubic decimeter per hour for every square meter of the solar collecting area. The system is distinguished from some others by the fact that there is no accumulated salt to be got rid of. Most materials of the demonstration unit don’t cost much and are easy to get.
Further experiments will be carried out on the device to optimize (优化) the choices of materials and test its durability (持久性) under realistic conditions. Researchers will also work on the design of the device to make it more consumer-friendly. It is expected that the system could finally help developing regions that are short of electricity supplies but rich in sea water and sunlight handle water crises.
46. What contributes most to the high efficiency of the device?
A. The choice of materials. B. The simplicity of the structure.
C. The use of multilayer equipment. D. The recycling of released heat.
47. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. What the device is for. B. How the device works.
C. How the heat is collected. D. What the device consists of.
48. The water produced in solar-powered water desalination system ______ .
A. do not cost too much money at all B. produces more water than other systems
C. displays better quality than drinking water D. still contains a certain amount of salt
49. What makes the device different from other systems?
A. Its zero accumulation of salt. B. The quality of water it produces.
C. Its stable and high production level. D. The low cost of the whole operation.
50. Why will researchers carry out further experiments on the device?
A. To make it environment friendly. B. To check its performance in labs.
C. To reduce its cost in developing area. D. To make it more suitable for consumers.

Maths anxiety may be causing a national crisis, Cambridge University researchers have said, as they find that one in ten children suffer from anxiety at the subject.
Researchers surveyed 1,700 British pupils aged 8 to 13 about their feelings towards the subject. They found 10% of children suffered from maths anxiety. Other feelings caused by maths included fear and anger, while physical symptoms included a racing heart or struggling to catch breath.
“The project studied students’ attitudes towards maths because of what could be called a maths crisis in the UK, ” researchers said. “ Many children and adults experience feelings of anxiety, fear or discomfort when they face maths. This may be leading to a low level of maths in the country. ” The number of adults with functional maths skills equal to a GCSE (英国普通中等教育证书) grade C has dropped from 26% in 2003 to only 22% in 2011, according to the survey. At the same time, only 57% of the children achieved the same level in functional maths skills.
Dr. Denes Szucs, a professor at Cambridge’s Centre for Neuroscience (神经科学) in Education said that there is a misunderstanding that only low performing children suffer from maths anxiety. “ This is a common misunderstanding that we have seen in decision makers, ” he said. “ They assume people are anxious about maths because they are poor achievers. ” In fact, more than 77% of children with high levels of maths anxiety are normal to high achievers. Dr Szucs went on, “ Probably their maths anxiety will go unnoticed because their performance is good. But they are very worried and in the long term their performance is limited. This is a real danger here: these are children who are completely able to do maths at a normal level, but may keep away from it because they feel anxious. ” The research also found that girls have higher levels of maths anxiety than boys.
John’s Hillman, director of education at the Nuffield Foundation said, “ Mathematical achievement is valuable, as a foundation for many other subjects and as an important predictor of future academic learning, job hunting and even health. Maths anxiety can seriously influence students’ performance in both primary and secondary schools. ”
51. What can we learn from the survey conducted by the Cambridge University researchers?
A. High performing children are safe from maths anxiety.
B. Adults suffer lower levels of maths anxiety than children.
C. Children with maths anxiety suffers both physically and mentally.
D. Girls’ bad performance leads to their high levels of maths anxiety.
52. Why did the researchers study students’ attitudes towards maths?
A. They want to help improve students’ academic performance.
B. Maths anxiety may cause great damage to children’s development.
C. They intend to correct people’s misunderstanding on maths anxiety.
D. The maths anxiety shared by people of all ages caused a national crisis.
53. How does the author prove there may be a national maths crisis in the UK in paragraph 3?
A. Presenting data. B. Listing reasons. C. Giving definition. D. Providing examples.
54. In paragraph 4, Dr. Denes Szucs found that ______ .
A. boys suffered a higher level of maths anxiety than girls
B. maths anxiety of low performing children goes unnoticed
C. some of the high achievers also suffered from math anxiety
D. poor achievers might have physical problem in the long term
55. Which of the questions could probably be answered in the paragraph that follows?
A. What should be done to improve students’ performance in maths?
B. What can be done to make children comfortable with maths?
C. How does maths anxiety influence people’s health?
D. How can children acquire functional skills?
第Ⅱ卷
第三部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
When my mother passed away a few years ago, my 85-year-old father was left alone in the large house they had shared for 50 years. Without her to watch out for him, he worried about who would find him and help if “ something happened. ”
My sister and I live in other states, so we hit on the idea that Dad could send us an e-mail every morning when he awoke. Thus was born the Morning Report.
He’s usually up at dawn, and his half a dozen or so sentences are waiting in my inbox when I wake up. If there’s no e-mail, I call him, or my sister does, to make sure everything is fine.
The reports have become more than a daily check, though: They’re a diary of sorts, a stimulation for more extended conversations, and a source of insight into his life. Through them, Dad tells us about his daily routines. I find his repeated activities — current-events discussion group on Tuesday nights, Chess Club on Wednesday afternoons, and coffee with friends on Sunday morning — reassuring (使人放心的).
Recently he told us, “ I’ve climbed halfway up Mount Washington! ” Given his age and distance from New Hampshire, such a hike was unlikely. I was confused for a day or two until he reminded me he was working on a hooked rug with a scene of the mountain.
Each e-mail closes with “ All my love, Dad. ” When my mother was alive, that sentiment (情绪) was normally reserved for her. Now that she is gone, he shares those feelings and his experiences with us. For me, what started as a simple security measure has spawned a deeper closeness.
I’m grateful my father is still able to manage his computer and the Internet. I know the day will come when he’ll no longer be able to write the reports, and we’ll have to find other ways to keep each other under observation. But until then, they are our way of knowing that another normal day has begun.
56. What was the author’s concern about her father after her mother passed away? ( no more than 10 words )
