Lino Marrero, 14, of Frisco, Texas, was on the soccer field when the new inspiration hit.

During a break in practice, Lino discovered that his smartphone was dead and he didn’t have a charger. His mind wandered back to a lesson in school on kinetic energy, a kind of energy produced by an object in motion. Lino thought, “What if I could make use of the energy wasted on the field to power the phone? ”

That moment led Lino to invent the Kinetic Kickz 2.0. It’s something like a rechargeable battery that fits into the sole (鞋底) of a shoe, collecting energy produced from walking. The energy can then be used to power portable devices. Marrero calculates that 12 minutes of walking can generate enough kinetic energy to charge 10% of a cellphone battery.

A device like this could change everyday life for many people. All around the world, there are people who don’t have access to electricity. Being able to even light up a little lightbulb on their ceiling would make a big difference. He dreamed that the technology could be used to create clean energy and limit the effects of climate change.

Lino came up with his first invention when he was in fourth grade. He invented String Ring an adjustable ban that protects the fingers as they move along the strings of a cello. It won first place in a state competition. Now Lino’s developing a String Ring for guitar player.

“It’s usually been about helping other people, for me, ” Lino says about inventing. The ninth grader encourages others to see their everyday problems as opportunities to come up with ideas for inventions, too. “ Kids are better inventors than grown-ups at times, because they can be more creative, ” Lino says. “ I just want to inspire more people to want to become inventors and help change the world. ”

    4. What motivated Lino to invent Kinetic Kickz 2.0?

    A. His everyday practice on the soccer field.

    B. His concerns for the environment protection.

    C. The helplessness when his phone was out of power.

    D. The knowledge he learned during his physics lessons.

    5. What does the Kinetic Kickz do?

    A. It changes people’s thought of fashion.

    B. It promotes the performance of batteries.

    C. It has completely changed people’s life.

    D. It could store the energy generated from moving.

    6. Which of the following best describes Marrero?

    A. Responsible and creative. B. Devoted and ambitious.

    C. Demanding and cooperative. D. Optimistic and generous.

    7. What does the text intend to do?

    A. Present a new technology. B. Tell a story of an inventive boy.

    C. Introduce an energy- gathering device. D. Explain the way to become an inventor.

    C

Product placement is a form of advertising in which a company pays a director to place its product on the set of a movie or TV show. It isn’t new. The oldest examples date all the way back to the invention of motion pictures, when the Lever Brothers’ Sunlight Soap appeared in the Lumiere films in 1896. But as streaming has become more popular, product placements have become an even more attractive option for advertisers now.

When watching web videos, most consumers either skip or ignore the advertisements that run before the video starts. So as advertisers struggle to reach consumers, they are increasingly turning to product placement, spending advertising budgets to get their advertisements into media content in ways that can’t be skipped or ignored. Studies have shown they increase viewers’ awareness of products and their positive attitudes toward them.

Not all product placements are effective, though. Those that seem to influence viewers the most are those that strike the careful balance between being noticeable and not too boring. Viewers tend to be turned off if the product placement is too noticable, as when a character in the show holds the product and talks about it.

Viewers are most influenced by product placements in which the product or brand name is spoken by one of the characters but not shown. Also viewers may be more attracted to product placements that appear earlier in a show or movie. Because we become more engaged in the plot and characters of a show or movie as it progresses. If a placement appears at the climax — the moment when our attention is fixed on what will happen next — we’re either less likely to notice the placement or more likely to be annoyed if we do notice it.

With increasing online viewers and better designed product placement, perhaps advertisers will consider product placement their first choice and decrease their spending on traditional advertising, like TV and print ads.

    8. What can we know about product placement?

    A. It is popular nowadays. B. It makes streaming attractive.

    C. It first appeared in TV shows. D. It aims to make videos interesting.

    9. What does the underlined word “ they ” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. Advertisments. B. Videos.

    C. Advertisers. D. Consumers.

    10. Which is the most effective product placement in a movie?

    A. The product is shown before the movie is on.

    B. The product appears in a conversation at the climax.

    C. The product is in the character’s hand at the beginning.

    D. The product is mentioned not long after the movie is on.

    11. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Product placement: a future trend for advertising

    B. Product placement: a new driving force behind movies

    C. Product placement: a mirror of the advertisement history

    D. Product placement: a perfect companion to online videos

    D

What would you think is the most plentiful man-made material on earth? Steel, plastic, glass? The answer is concrete.

And while it’s an incredibly useful material existing everywhere, the energy intensive process of making concrete releases massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, and its main component, which is a mixture of rocks, sand, water and most importantly, cement (水泥) to glue it altogether, is responsible for 7 percent of global CO2 emissions, leaving a huge carbon footprint. But without cement, concrete doesn’t hold up skyscrapers.

What if there was a way that instead of releasing carbon dioxide, concrete could trap it forever? Carbon Cure is kind of the brains of the technology. This innovation puts carbon dioxide into the concrete as it’s being mixed. When the concrete hardens, those otherwise harmful emissions are trapped forever, before they even reach our atmosphere. Christie Gamble, part of the team behind Carbon Cure’s technology, explained ,“ We actually transform the CO2 into a mineral, and the real selling point is that the mineral itself improves the compressive (压缩的) strength for the concrete, which means producers like Thomas Concrete can use less cement in their mixtures and still achieve the same strength with fewer emissions.

Compression tests prove that the concrete made with Carbon Cure is just as hardy as the traditional stuff. If we can reduce 5 percent of the carbon footprint of the concrete industry, that’s a significant change from where we’re right now. Ultimately, if this technology was employed across the globe, we could reduce about 700 megatons of CO2 every year, which is the same as taking 150 million cars off the road every year.

It’s going to change the way the concrete industry does things. Though companies pay to use Carbon Cure and buy CO2 from a factory, they save money by using less of their most expensive cement.

    12. What’s the main focus on concrete in paragraph 2?

    A. Its makeup. B. Its serious air pollution.

    C. Its daily use. D. Its producing process.

    13. How does Carbon Cure work?

    A. By adding a new mineral to CO2.

    B. By hardening the concrete more quickly.

    C. By improving the quality of the cement.

    D. By trapping carbon dioxide in the concrete.

    14. In what way does the author illustrate the eco-benefit of Carbon Cure?

    A. By making comparisons. B. By giving examples.

    C. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By providing evidence.

    15. What is the purpose of this text?

    A. To present a problem. B. To explain a process.

C To advocate an action. D. To introduce a solution.

Kelsey Gilland and her husband were shopping at PetSmart, looking for a company for one of their dogs, and decided to go and see if they had any adoptable cats that day. The past few times when the couple went to PetSmart, there hadn’t been any. But that day they were delighted to see two adorable cats hanging out. They were only going to look — but their dog Paisleigh had other plans.

As soon as Paisleigh saw one of the cats, Oliver, she was completely attracted by him. The instant the two interacted through the glass, they seemed to have a special connection right off the bat.

“When I saw the way they reacted together, my husband looked at me and said, ‘ Babe, it’s an orange cat, isn’t that what you’ve been wanting?’ Everything in me said, ‘ YES! Please, let’s take him home!’ ”

Gilland was worried about how Oliver would fit in with the family’s two other cats, though, and so the couple left PetSmart without Oliver, much to Paisleigh’s disappointment.

That night, Gilland couldn’t stop thinking about Oliver. The way he and Paisleigh connected had been such magic, and she began to think that maybe he was meant to be a part of their family.

“ I thought about that sweet kitty all night long and when I woke… I wanted to go back to PetSmart to see if he was still there,” Gilland said. “My husband was all for it. We got dressed and went to PetSmart, we took our own cage because we knew we were bringing him home if he was still there.”

Luckily, Oliver was still there and available for adoption. Due to COVID-19, the couple wasn’t able to do a meet and greet with Oliver before adopting him, but they decided it didn’t matter. They went with Paisleigh’s inner feelings and took him home.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    52【答案】One possible version:

The moment they got home, they let Oliver out of his cage to meet Paisleigh. The pair were just as delighted as they’d been at PetSmart the day before. Oliver came right out of his cage and right over to Paisleigh without any hesitation as if he had known her his whole life. At first she just wanted to lick all over him but he didn’t mind at all. They spent the next few hours together before we let the other animals in to meet.

To the joy of the couple, Oliver fitted in with the other pets so quickly. Their other pets quickly accepted him as a member of the pack, and Paisleigh was absolutely overjoyed that Oliver was brought home. It’s crazy that Oliver is so loving and shares so many characteristics that Paisleigh does. They’re like a match made in heaven. Gilland and her husband are grateful that they brought Paisleigh to PetSmart that day so that she could accidentally choose their newest family member.
