No matter what kind of bad experience we experience, we should treat it actively. Fourth-grade teacher Rachel Harder recognized this, and she found an amazing way to help out both her students and their families.A few years ago, the Kansas teacher attended a trauma (心理创伤) conference. She learned that some police stations partner with schools so they can let teachers know when one of their students has a police encounter, something that could cause them to need extra care or attention. A year after the conference, Rachel had a student with autism (自闭症) who frequently had tough days. To support the student, Rachel told his mom to simply text her “handle with care” to let her know when it was going to be one of those days. The simple method was such a success that Rachel decided to send all her students home with a note for their parents. It explained what the “Handle with Care” system was and how they could take advantage of it. In no time, parents began to show their appreciation for Rachel’s incredible act of kindness. But Rachel’s sympathy didn’t end with her class. Word spread of the amazing system, and teachers across the country began giving it a shot in their own classrooms. Printouts can be found on the Smart School House website, and the feedback has been extremely positive!Even though teachers can sometimes tell when a student is having a tough day just by the way they’re acting, Rachel said these simple texts allow educators to make minor adjustments in advance that, in turn, make the whole day better for everyone. “It’s important for me to give kids a few minutes of extra time or space,” she said, “and it’s easy to give.”4. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 1 refer to?A. The tough time in life. B. The beauty of nature.C. A positive attitude to hardship. D. An extreme working style.5. How did Rachel help the student with autism?A. By supporting him to do what he wants. B. By discussing his trauma in a conference.C. By knowing his state at home from his mother. D. By getting assistance from some police stations.6. Why did Rachel send notes to the parents of all her students?A. To prove the behavior is efficient. B. To inform the parents of her method.C. To explain the kindness to the parents. D. To gain the parents’ sympathy for herself.7. Which of the following can best describe Rachel?A. Curious and courageous. B. Energetic and grateful.C. Humorous and warm-hearted. D. Responsible and considerate.CPicture this: you’re between video meetings, and skimming your social media. Headlines like “Death rate continues to rise”, and “COVID-19 may cause long-term health risks” flash across your screen. Your mood takes a dive, but you can’t stop.If this rings true for you, you’re not alone. Research on the effects of bad news on mood suggests exposure to negative COVID news is likely to be harmful to our stable emotion. For instance, one study conducted in March 2020 involving more than 6,000 Americans found that the more time participants spent consuming COVID news in a day, the unhappier they felt.To find out more, researchers conducted a study where they showed hundreds of people real-world content on either Twitter or YouTube for two to four minutes. The Twitter feeds and YouTube videos featured either general news about COVID, or news about kindness during COVID. Researchers then measured these participants’ moods using a questionnaire, and compared their moods with participants who did not engage with any content at all.The result was shocking. People who were shown general COVID-related news experienced lower moods than people who were shown nothing at all. Meanwhile, people who were shown COVID news stories involving acts of kindness didn’t experience the same decline in mood, but also didn’t gain the boost in mood they’d predicted. These findings suggest that spending as little as two to four minutes consuming negative news about COVID-19 can have a harmful impact on our mood. Although researchers didn’t see an improvement in mood among participants who were shown positive news stories involving acts of kindness, this may be because the stories were still related to COVID. In other researches, positive news stories have been associated with improvements in mood.So what can we do to look after ourselves, and make our time on social media more pleasant? One option is to delete our social media accounts altogether. Figures show almost half of Facebook users in the UK and the US considered leaving the platform in 2020. Or it may be more realistic to seek out or spread content that makes you happy. This may be images of cute kittens, beautiful landscapes, delicious food videos or something else.8. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the research?A. The conclusion. B. The reason. C. The procedure. D. The problem.9. What news on smart phones can better our mood according to the text?A. A brave Chinese teacher saved a drowning boy. B. Japanese volcanic eruption killed many people.C. A big fire broke out in French St Paul’s Cathedral. D. Beijing Olympic Committee held a press conference.10. What can we learn from the text?A. People feel negative because of the news online.B. Positive stories greatly improved participants’ mood.C. Research shows COVID news may make people feel sad.D.50% of the Facebook users have stopped using Facebook.11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. COVID-19 and Health Risks B. Proper Ways to Use Social MediaC. Social Media’s Effect on Our Mood D. Virtual Social Media and Real WorldDResearchers say a new electrical device placed in three paralyzed patients has helped them walk again. The lower bodies of the three patients were left paralyzed after they suffered spinal (脊柱的) cord injuries. But a device implanted in the spinal cord was able to send electrical signals to the muscles to permit them to stand, walk and exercise.Scientists have discovered that neurons—which receive and send signals for muscle movements—often still work in injured patients with serious spinal cord injuries. However, past research into spinal cord injuries has centered on the stimulation of neurons. Now in the latest experiment led by Gregoire Courtine and Jocelyne Bloch of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, three paralyzed men were implanted a new electrical device designed to copy an action of the brain, in which it sends signals to the spinal cord that result in muscle movement. When the spinal cord receives the brain signals, it stimulates a collection of nerve cells that can activate different muscles. The researchers reported that all three patients who got the spinal cord implants were able to take their first steps within an hour after receiving them. Over the next six months, the patients regained the ability to take part in more advanced walking activities, the study found. They were also able to ride bicycles and swim in community settings.Unlike other attempts to help paralyzed patients walk by stimulating nerves through the back of the spine, Courtine said that his team redesigned the devices so signals would enter the spine from the sides. This method permits more direct targeting and activation of spinal cord areas, he said. The team then developed artificial intelligence (AI) systems linked to the device. The AI controls electrodes on the device to send signals to stimulate individual nerves that control muscles needed for walking and other activities. However, because the patients muscles were weak from not being used, they needed help with supporting their weight, the researchers said. It also took some time for them to learn to work with the technology. Still,Bloch said, “The more they train, the more they start lifting their muscles, the more fluid it becomes.”12. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?A. Neurons in paralyzed patients can’t work.B. Paralyzed men recovered using a new device.C. The new device can imitate the brain to send signals.D. Stimulating the neurons is the focus of the latest research.13. How does the new device stimulate the spinal cord areas more directly?A. By using the AI system. B. By sending the signals to the brain.C. By making signals enter the spine from the sides. D. By stimulating nerves through the back of the spine.14. Which can best describe Bloch’s idea in the last paragraph?A. Practice makes perfect. B. It’s hard to please all.C. Every garden has its weeds. D. Put the cart before the horse.15. What is the purpose of this text?A. To introduce the findings of a recent research.B. To report the consequence of spinal cord injuries.C. To recommend a treatment for paralyzed patients.D. To compare a recent research with other previous researches.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。I began a new job in a new city six months ago. Big moments of changing like this have a way of dragging up deep, hidden fears we don’t face in our longer periods of stability. 16 . I was constantly losing sleep, had lots of panicky doubt, and even some regret when I thought about the job I just left.Change is risk. Our primitive brains translate risk into danger and our survival as a species depends on avoiding it. Though philosopher Nietzsche famously said, “That which does not kill us, makes us stronger”, the risk that it could kill you can easily cause anxiety. 17 . Me, no exception.Unluckily, there are always big changes we must face at some point. 18 . The first thing I did when I doubted myself and my decision to take a new job and move to a new city was talk to people who know and care about me. So blinded was I by change-caused anxiety that I had lost sight of my common sense. I reached out to my friends and my old boss. They gave me so much good advice that I wrote it down and referred to it often in those early weeks. 19 . Simply thinking about the past challenges where you came out on top is a reminder that you will do so this time as well. Sometimes our greatest difficulties become our greatest moments of success.Change, while requiring adjustment—sometimes painful adjustment—often finds its way back to balance. Change and struggle are usually the only ways to get to someplace better. 20 . So, the sooner you discover what helps you adjust, restart, and succeed during change, the easier it will be to bag the next peak.A. Crisis is also opportunityB. Change also never goes awayC. At first, I thought someone had died because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won’t be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.” Dad resting on the couch, beckoned (招手示意) the boys into his arms. “Things will change when I get back to work.”My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows, he didn’t talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income. At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night after our parents’ announcement, we talked.Rodney began. “Em, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked? I thought Mommy was gonna cry.”“Me, too. Daddy’s foots... this big” whispered Stevie holding out his arms. “Yeah... We’re in hard times” I said. “It makes Mommy and Daddy sad.” “But we don’t have to be sad,” I added, hoping to brighten the mood.“Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up,” I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank... earn some more.. and surprise them with gifts!”“I can run errands (跑腿) for Aunt Em and neighbors to earn money” I offered.“Yeah,” Rodney added “I and Stevie can return bottles and save the deposit money... instead of buying candy!” He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow.“Yeah!” Stevie clutched his hands together. We had a plan!Until they nodded off, I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret. “Don’t talk about it during the day.”注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission! The following weeks saw me dashing home from school each day determined to earn a penny. I was usually greeted by secret winks and grins—one with a missing tooth, and the other with tiny, straight teeth—both assuring me our secret was safe. A few days before Christmas, we gleefully went shopping. We bought Mom a new apron and for Dad, a pair of leather slippers. The night of Christmas Eve seemed endless. I awoke occasionally, or one of my brothers woke me asking, “How long till daylight?”On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy. Surprised and stunned, they showered us with tons of confusing questions. “How did you...” “Where did you...” “Who gave you...”. As we explained how we’d schemed, earned and saved our money, their faces relaxed into expressions of astonishment. Then, with glistening tears, Mom and Dad wrapped us three into their arms. On this special Christmas morning, with the five of us hugging, talking, laughing and listening with fresh affection and gratitude, I understood that rich or poor, we would keep together and be happy in one another.
