Each year, the wrld wastes abut ne-sixth f the fd available t cnsumers. It is estimated(估计)that the wrld has lst apprximately 931 millin metric tns f fd s far. That's abut an average f 121 kilgrams fr each man, wman and child n Earth.
What isn't eaten als wastes all f the resurces used t make that fd. Thse resurces include the water, energy, mney, human labr and mre. Wasted fd "des nt feed peple, but it des feed climate change", said Ott, wh wrks fr the UN Envirnment Prgram (UNEP), during a news cnference. Sme 690 peple g hungry each year. Mre than 3 billin peple cannt affrd a healthy diet. Meanwhile, the activities that had prduced all f the lst and wasted fd led t 8 t 10 percent f all glbal greenhuse-gas emissin. Reducing fd waste culd ease hunger and pssibly lwer that pllutin. That's the cnclusin f the Fd Waste Index Reprt 2021, a reprt issued n March 4.

Dear Mary Jucunda
I believe that by wrking fr the space prgram I can make cntributins t the relief and eventual slutin t such serius prblems as pverty and hunger n Earth. Basic t the hunger prblem are tw functins: the prductin f fd and the distributin f fd. Fd prductin by agriculture, cean fishing and ther large-scale(大规模的) peratins is efficient in sme parts f the wrld, but rather disappinting in many thers.
The best tl fr the imprvement f all these functins, undubtedly, is the artificial Earth satellite. Circling the glbe at a high altitude, it can screen wide areas f land within a shrt time; it can bserve and measure a large variety f factrs indicating the status and cnditin f crps, sil, drughts, rainfall, snw cver, etc., and it can radi this infrmatin t grund statins fr apprpriate use.
The distributin f the fd t the needy is a cmpletely different prblem. Efficient relief frm hunger, I am afraid, will nt cme befre the bundaries between natins have becme less divisive than they are tday. I d nt believe that space flight will accmplish this miracle ver night. Hwever, the space prgram is certainly amng the mst prmising and pwerful agents wrking in this directin, just taking the recent near-tragedy f Apll 13 as an example.
Higher fd prductin thrugh surveys and assessments frm rbit, and better fd distributin thrugh imprved internatinal relatins, are nly tw examples f hw deeply the space prgram will influence life n Earth.
Althugh ur space prgram seems t lead us away frm ur Earth and ut tward the mn, the sun, the planets, and the stars, I believe that nne f these celestial(天上的) bjects will find as much attentin and study by space scientists as ur Earth. It will becme a better Earth, nt nly because f all the new technlgical and scientific knwledge which we will apply t the betterment f life, but als because we are develping a far deeper appreciatin f ur Earth, f life, and f man.
Sincerely yurs,
Dr Ernst Stuhlinger
