This exercise returns t the newspaper theme that runs thrughut the Student’s Bk and gives practice in expressing pinins and making chices.
Make sure that students understand the situatin. Sme students have difficulty in playing a rle, and yet they must becme used t this type f task because it is increasingly used fr teaching spken English and als in public examinatins. In this task, the students are acting as cmmittee members f the schl’s English-language newspaper.
If yur schl prduces r has prduces r has prduced any such newspapers, yu culd bring cpies t class as examples.
Nte that students have t d several things in this task. First, they must review the list f pssible tpics and evaluate each ne by putting a tick in ne f the bxes. Next, they must reduce the tpics t the best five. Third, they must then add anther suggested tpic f their wn. Furth, ne persn frm sme f the grups must summarize the grup’s decisins.
Appint a grup leader and a secretary fr each grup. The grup leader’s main jbs are t get everyne t cntribute, t keep the gru0p wrking thrugh their tasks fairly quickly, and t make sure that peple speak English and nt Mandarin. The secretary’s jbs are t nte dwn the decisins f the grup, and t give the final reprt at the end f the meeting.
Page 60 cntains sme suggested language which students may find helpful in the discussin, but they shuld nt feel that they must attempt t use r be restricted t this language. What we are always trying t d in “Speak up” tasks is t help students t becme independent and t use their wn linguistic resurces, even if they make mistakes.
If yur class r schl des prduce an English-language news paper, it may be useful t pass n t them the results f this exercise, as feedback abut what students want t read in such a magazine.
