Damin sits n the side f the river cking a meal, with a large bird n his head. The bird is a crmrant, and Damin is a fisherman. He is ver 65 nw but still wrks every day. He is thin, and f average height, but he is very fit. Althugh he is an elderly man, he is strng enugh t cntrl his raft in the river where he lives and wrks with his crmrants.
Crmrants are large black birds. They are gd at catching fish because they can swim well underwater. Their large feet are used t push them quickly thrugh the water. They can dive dwn 25 metres, and stay underwater fr up t tw minutes.

Damin des nt require nets r a fishing rd t catch fish. It is dne fr him by his 12 crmrants. Damin’s fishing trips ften begin in the late afternn. He sets ff n his bamb raft with his birds. When he reaches the right place, he stps. He ties a piece f grass arund the neck f each bird, s that it cannt swallw the fish. Then he pushes the birds int the water, and jumps up and dwn and bangs the water with his ple. The fish are frightened by this. At night a light is hung frm the frnt f the raft. This enables Damin t see better, and als attracts the fish. The crmrants swim dwn and catch the fish, and bring them back t the raft. The fish are then remved frm the birds’ muths by Damin and thrwn int a big basket. Later sme f the fish are sld, and the rest are divided between Damin’s family and the crmrants.
