Then he helped his mum prepare for the family dinner on Christmas Eve.She cooked roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, Christmas pudding, and apple pie. They shared stories and told jokes during the dinner. The food, the parades, and the beautiful fireworks—it's always exciting for me. It's good to spend time with my family, too, although it can get a bit boring in my hometown after a while. How about you?Joe: Well, this was my first Chinese New Year. I loved watching the traditional performances, and I was invited to lots of delicious meals. But, to be frank, the fireworks going off throughout the night were really annoying.Song Lin: Oh, well, yes, I can see your point there! But it's all part of the tradition to frighten away the evil spirits.Joe: Yes, well, there seemed to be a lot of them in my area! Anyway, except for that, everything was fine. I'm really looking forward to the next festival. Role-play the conversation with your partner. Do the practice.- Familiarize students with the context.- Exercise students’ listening skills.Step 7Tips for Effective Presentations 1. Show your Passion and Connect with your AudienceIt’s hard to be relaxed and be yourself when you’re nervous. But time and again, the great presenters say that the most important thing is to connect with your audience, and the best way to do that is to let your passion for the subject shine through. Be honest with the audience about what is important to you and why it matters. Be enthusiastic and honest, and the audience will respond. 2. Keep it Simple: Concentrate on your Core MessageWhen planning your presentation, you should always keep in mind the question: What is the key message (or three key points) for my audience to take away? You should be able to communicate that key message very briefly. Some experts recommend a 30-second ‘elevator summary’, others that you can write it on the back of a business card, or say it in no more than 15 words. Whichever rule you choose, the important thing is to keep your core message focused and brief. And if what you are planning to say doesn’t contribute to that core message, don’t say it. 3. Smile and Make Eye Contact with your AudienceThis sounds very easy, but a surprisingly large number of presenters fail to do it. If you smile and make eye contact, you are building rapport, which helps the audience to connect with you and your subject. It also helps you to feel less nervous, because you are talking to individuals, not to a great mass of unknown people. To help you with this, make sure that you don’t turn down all the lights so that only the slide screen is visible. Your audience needs to see you as well as your slides. 4. Relax, Breathe and EnjoyIf you find presenting difficult, it can be hard to be calm and relaxed about doing it. One option is to start by concentrating on your breathing. Slow it down, and make sure that you’re breathing fully. Make sure that you continue to pause for breath occasionally during your presentation too. If you can bring yourself to relax, you will almost certainly present better. If you can actually start to enjoy yourself, your audience will respond to that, and engage better. Your presentations will improve exponentially, and so will your confidence. It’s well worth a try. Students learn how to express.- Get the tips of expression.- Improve their talking skill.Step 8Pair Work Share a recent festival experience with your partner and tell him/her how you felt about the festival and why. Use what they have learnt to discuss with their partner.- Practice their listening and talking skills.- Share their ideas and broaden their horizons.- Practice their team work sprit.Assessing Your ProgressStep 9Let’s assess Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the words in the box.The beautiful flowers on cherry branches are the most ___________ sign of the arrival of spring. In December, many companies have ___________ dress parties to celebrate the end of the year. The female soldiers forming the biggest ___________ group in the National Day parade attracted a lot of interest from the ___________.The most common color you see during the Spring Festival is red because red___________ life, wealth, and good luck in Chinese culture. The newly married couple received dozens of letters of ___________ from their friends. If you are the best man at a wedding, it is best to keep your speech simple and ___________.She will never forget the ___________ when she saw all the audience clapping their hands and cheering after her performance.Falling on the 9th day of the 9th ___________ month, the Chongyang Festival is also called the Double Ninth Festival.
