Puy du Fou is the second most visited theme park in France, after Paris Disneyland, and the world’s greatest, and most authentic, living history park.

Founded in 1977 by a young local aristocrat with a passion for history, Philippe de Villiers, the theme park has developed to become a multi-attraction historic theme park providing a trip back in time to different ages and times of the past.

Unlike Disneyland, Puy du Fou — while making sure that the attractions all provide a great visitor experience — also takes pride in ensuring a fair degree of historical accuracy. The sets and the shows are pictures of the world as it really was... with a few special effects added in.

In the summer holiday period (June to mid September), climax of the day is the famous “Cinéscénie”. the original event around which the Puy du Fou theme park has subsequently developed and expanded. This magnificent after-dark spectacular of light, fireworks, sound and action, set against the backdrop of the old Château du Puy du Fou, has been seen over the years by over 10 million spectators, lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes, involving 1200 actors and extras, and performed over a 50 acre stage.

The dog Pooch Chi Chi managed to open the door and let a fire crew in after his owner collapsed on the kitchen floor.

Responders were searching for another entrance when they heard a “click” as the dog managed to unlock the door to let them in They found the man, named only as Mr Green, collapsed on the floor in the kitchen as the fire took hold on the hob. Firefighters then swiftly put out the fire and carried out first aid until paramedics(急救医士)arrived.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said “a potential disaster” was averted with help from the dog. They said they were called to the scene after a smoke detector was activated and a Careline alarm was sounded.

Mr Green initially answered the call but operator at Careline lost communication. Within six minutes, the crew was on scene and investigating. They could hear the alarm but were unable to establish contact with the man inside. With curtains drawn, the crew could not see in-side but could hear a dog barking. It wasn’t until later in the incident that they discovered that Chi Chi had managed to open the front door and let the crew inside.

Ian Bolton, Crew Manager for Home and Partnerships at Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service added: “Having monitored detection in people’s homes means the fire service are only minutes away from providing lifesaving assistance. This is a real success story and highlights the importance of Careline and the fire service. Careline’s system, combined with the speed of our crews getting to the incident, saved Mr Green’s life. The cherry on the cake. however, was Chi Chi letting the crews in before they had to force entry to the property. ”

Climate change and land-use change are projected to make wildfires more frequent and intense, with a global increase of extreme fires of up to 14 per cent by 2030, 30 per cent by the end of 2050 and 50 per cent by the end of the century, according to a new report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and GRID-Arendal.

The report calls for a complete change in government spending on wildfires, changing their investments from reaction and response to prevention and preparedness. The report spreading like Wildfire: The Rising Threat of Extraordinary Landscape Fires finds a higher risk even for the Arctic and other regions previously unaffected by wildfires, the report had been released before representatives of 193 nations held a meeting in Nairobi for the restarted 5th session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2), between 28 February and 2March, 2022. The publication calls on governments to adopt a new “Fire Ready formula” with two-thirds of spending devoted to planning, prevention, preparedness, and recovery. With one third left for response, currently, direct responses to wildfires typically receive over half of related cost, while planning and prevention receive less than one per cent.

To prevent fires, authors call for a combination of data and science-based monitoring systems with native knowledge and for a stronger regional and international cooperation.

“Current government responses to wildfires are often putting money in the wrong place. Those emergency service workers and firefighters on the frontlines who are risking their lives to fight forest wildfires need to be supported. We have to reduce the risk of extreme wildfires by being better prepared: invest more in fire risk reduction, work with local communities, and strengthen global commitment to fight climate change,” said Inger Andersen. UNEP Executive Director.

Wildfires disproportionately(不成比例地) affect the world’s poorest nations. With an impact that extends for days, weeks and even years after the flames die down, they block progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and deepen social inequalities in some fields.

    8. What does the report appeal to the government to do with wildfires?

    A. Invest more money on forecast.

    B. Focus on prevention and preparedness.

    C. Give advanced warning to wild animals.

    D. Plant more trees to make up for the loss of forests.

    9. What’s Inger Andersen’s attitude towards the current government’s measures?

    A. Supportive. B. Unconcerned. C. Unfair. D. Critical.

    10. What is the author most likely to talk about next?

    A. The areas hit by climate change.

    B. The names of the world’s richest nations.

    C. The bad effects of wildfires on different fields.

    D. The relationship between wildfires and health.

    11. What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Wildfires are spreading worldwide.

    B. The UN held a meeting to discuss wildfires.

    C. Governments should prepare themselves for wildfires.

    D. The UNEP Executive Director released a report on wildfires.

Information about worker commutes(上下班通勤)from smartphones and fitness trackers can predict individual job performance, according to a new study. "Your commute predicts your day,”said Andrew Campbell. the lead researcher and co-author of the study. “This re-search demonstrates that mobile sensing is capable of identifying how the commute affects individual workers.”

Participants in the study used an activity tracker and a smartphone-based sensing app to capture physiological and behavioral patterns during commuting, including activity levels, phone usage, heart rates, and stress. The system also captured external factors such as locations, weather, commute duration, and commute variability, Researchers analyzed data from275 workers collected over a one-year period before the outbreak of COVID-19. The workers, close to 95% of whom drove, were monitored as they traveled. They were also monitored for30-minute periods before and after commuting.

The study assessed workers using two recognized standards of job performance; counter-productive work behavior and organizational citizenship behavior. The former harms an organization on purpose, whereas the latter is beneficial. Baselines for both measures were established regularly through self-reporting questionnaires.

"Compared to low performers, high performers display greater consistency in the time they arrive and leave work," said PinoAudia, a professor of Management and Organizations at the Tuck School of  Business and a co-author of the study. "This dramatically reduces the negative impacts of commuting variability and suggests that the secret to high performance may lie in sticking to better routines."

The study also finds that high performers tend to have physiological indicators that are consistent with physical fitness and stress resilience. And low performers have higher stress levels in the times before, during, and, after commutes, and use their phones more during the commutes.

Previous research on commuting indicates that stress, anxiety, and frustration from commuting can lead to a less efficient workforce. This is the first study using wearables that are not easily noticed and smartphones to predict worker performance from commuting data alone.Previous studies have used more intrusive(插人的)and expensive technology to under-stand the commuting experience, but no study has previously connected commuting data with the impact on workplace performance.

The study also demonstrates that not all commutes can be bad.By tracking commuting traits such as walking distance and steps, the research confirms that commuters who are involved in active forms of commuting typically experience increased productivity at work.

    12. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. The function of an activity trackers and app.

    B. The way in which the study was conducted.

    C. The analysis researchers made of the patterns.

    D. The comparisons before and after commuting.

    13. What can we learn about high performers?

    A. They can benefit from a less efficient workforce.

    B. They have higher stress levels before commutes.

    C. They arrive and leave work almost at fixed time every day.

    D. They are good at handling the negative impacts on commuting.

    14. What is special about this study?

AIt used the most advanced wearable devices.

BIt firstly linked commuting data to job performance.

    C. Its research method was more scientific and reliable.

    D. The commuting data it collected were more accurate.

    15. What is the best title for the text?

    A. The longer the commute, the better the job performance

    B. Wearables help reduce the impact of commuting on workers

    C. Commuting has a negative impact on job performance

    D. Wearable tech helps predict job performance through commuting data

    【答案】12. B13. C14. B15. D
