Emily Meyer was just 5 years old when she was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip,New York,on Christmas night. While she was recovering, someone from Child Life stopped by her room to give her a present. She and her mom protestedEmily had already received some, after allbut they insisted that every child would get a gift!

The Child Life team explained that no child should be in the hospital during the holiday season, but if they are, they should feel the joy of the holidays while they are there, Emily said.

That moment made a lasting impact on her.She decided she wanted to help the charity provide gifts for kids who are stuck in the hospital over the holidays,so she started her own toy drive in 2010.

Emily’s Awesome Toy Drive set out to collect new, unwrapped gifts that would be delivered to sick kids, and it’s still going today! We collected about 20 or so toys the first year, Emily said.“Every year from then on,it just grew and grew and grew and grew.It just became this whole big thing.” She celebrated her 10th year of helping sick children by matching last year’s donations of $2,500,despite the challenges of isolation(隔离).

In order to hit that goal, she started collecting toys way back in the summer months and created an Amazon wish list to give people a contact-free delivery option.Even better,Emily’s Awesome Toy Drive is a family affair! Her parents help with the organization, wrapping, and delivery of the toys, and they love it just as much as Emily does.

When kids are able to play and use toys to distract them,it makes a stay at the hospital so much easier, her mom,Tara Decola, said.“It’s been amazing how it’s grown over the years and knowing that she is able to provide comfort and care for anyone who is ill just gives us a lot of joy as a family.”

People walk almost an extra mile each day if they have an activity tracker on their smartphone or watch,a study has found.

Researchers analyzed dozens of studies comparing people’s exercise activity with and without a tracking app,and found that being able to keep tabs on progress boosted how far people walked or ran.The studies involved a total of 7,454 people.

Overall, people walked an average of 1,850 more steps if they had an appa significant increase in daily workouts. Most people take somewhere around 2,000 steps to walk a mile.

Authors of the study, published in the BritishJournalofSportsMedicine, said doctors might consider prescribing(开处方) such apps and trackers for patients looking to get fitter.

Just 4,400 steps a day tied to women living longer, study says.

Interventions(介入) using smartphone apps or activity trackers seem promising from a clinical and public health perspective, the authors wrote.

Given the wide and increasing reach of smartphones, even modest improvements in physical activity can produce large effects at the population level.”

The study looked at research conducted mainly in the United States, and less than a third of the subjects involved were women,so it’s unclear how widespread the findings would be.

The average number of steps taken by American adults is between 4,000 and 5,000 per day, previous research has shown.

8.What does the study find about the walking tracker?

A.It speeds up walking. B.It follows your position.

C.It assists the research. D.It benefits the walkers.

9.Why do doctors advocate their patients using such apps and trackers?

    D.To record their health condition.

10.Which word best describes the authors’ attitude of the study towards using walking trackers?

    A.Indifferent. B.Ambiguous.

    C.Optimistic. D.Skeptical.

11.What do we know about the study?

    A.It involved mainly men.

    B.It involved a total of 4,400 people.

C.It was applied widely around the world.

D.It was published in an American magazine.

    D

The icy beauty of the Arctic attracts thousands of visitors every year to see its wonderful wildlife, landscape and local cultures.Visitors can take ships on a voyage along the Arctic Ocean or take flights to cities along the Arctic edge.No matter how one gets there, they should wear warm clothes and get ready to take in the attractions.

Travelling to the Arctic leaves an unforgettable impression on the visitors. Its vast expanse and the fragility of its environment are two things that really blow away people, said Cheryl Rosa, the director of the US Arctic Research Commission.

Visitors to the Arctic Circle will have a lot of activities to choose from if they want to see all that the region has to offer.Hiking with snowshoes, dog sledding and kayaking are common activities.Visitors with sharp eyes are likely to spot polar bears. To get even closer to the animals of the sea, visitors can go polar snorkeling with seals.Of course,Arctic adventures aren’t complete without viewing the wonders of the Arctic Circle’s large glaciers and icebergs as well.

One of the most impressive attractions and maybe the most difficult to see is the Northern Lights, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. They are natural lights that glow a brilliant green and light up the horizon.Sometimes they appear as waves that dance across the sky in different colors.

The best places to view the Northern Lights are in Northern Norway,Sweden’s Abisko National Park,Iceland,America’s Alaska or Canada’s Yukon.Charles Deehr,an expert at the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Geophysical Institute, recommended planning a trip between winter and spring, especially when there is a new moon.

Even though the Arctic is a popular tourist destination, don’t forget that people live here too.“It is recommended that visitors go with tour groups that are respectful of Arctic residents and their culture, said Rosa.“Too many people can disturb the small villages.Finding tour groups that work with local communities is important.”

12.What does the underlined part blow away in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Defeat. B.Affect.

    C.Move. D.Impress.

13.What can we know about the Northern Lights?

A.They only produce green lights at night.

B.They are natural lights and hard to see.

C.They seldom occur between winter and spring.

D.The best time to view them is when there is a full moon.

14.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Tour groups are not welcome among Arctic residents.

B.The Arctic’s population has been rising in recent years.

C.Visitors should choose suitable tour groups when visiting.

D.Tour groups should get permission from local communities.

15.What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?

A.To inform visitors of local cultures.

B.To recommend some activities to visitors.

C.To introduce a popular tourist destination.

D.To share a travel experience in the Arctic.

    .阅读七选五

Hiring the wrong person can cost your business money. 1 Employment tests can determine a potential employee’s personality and ability level to see whether the person is really a good fit for the job.As you begin to test job candidates, you’ll find that you’re more confident in selecting the right person to work for your company.

Give potential employees a personality test. 2 For example, some types of jobs require people to have leadership skills or to enjoy working with people.Personality tests use questions to determine a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes.

3 Many jobs require employees to have the ability to solve problems, which is where a cognitive test comes in.These tests use logic puzzles and allow you to see how the candidate works to solve a problem. 4 For example, you could simply ask the candidate how he would solve a problem, such as how he would determine the height of a single piece of paper.

5 Also called a skill test, simulation tests help you to see if the candidate can really do the things that he says he can do.For example,if you need a candidate that speaks a foreign language and his resume says that he speaks Spanish fluently, you can ask him to perform a task in Spanish. You can also use this technique to test computer skills.

    A.Create a simulation test.

B.This doesn’t have to be a formal test.

C.Decide whether you need drug testing.

D.Test the cognitive skills of a potential employee.

E.This is particularly true in cases where workers may be operating heavy machinery.

F.A personality test will help you to determine whether this candidate is a good match.

G.Therefore,it’s wise to take the time to test candidates for job positions before you do the hiring.
