I must have looked deep in thought,or as deep in thought as an 11yearold man can, when my grandmother glanced up from her weeding to ask,“You have something on your mind, don't you?”
“Yes,I was thinking that someday I want to be an Olympic speed skating champion like my hero,Eric Heiden,I want to be a doctor like my parents and I want to help children in Africa.”
I immediately knew I had confided in the right person when a knowing smile broke across her face.“Johann,of course! You can do anything you want to do!” she said simply. And with my grandmother's support,I set out to pursue my passions.
14 years later,I was well ready to take hold of my first dream: becoming an Olympic champion. The Olympics in 1994 were in my home country,Norway. As I entered the Olympic stadium,I wasn't the best athlete, and many had doubts about my ability to perform well. But I had something special working for me.I had a woman in the first row who believed in me following my passions just as much as I did.For the first time ever,my grandmother was going to see me skate.
It happened.Breaking a world record,I won the gold.
As I stood on the podium(领奖台) that I had dreamed about my entire life,a curious question popped into my head. Why me? Why did I win, given all the other incredible competitors out there? The reason had to be more than a grandmother who shared a belief in her grandson's dream. The question led me to only one answer: because I wanted to make a difference in the world, and with all the media attention on my success,I could.
I immediately knew what that difference had to be: hope in the lives of the children in Africa.Six months earlier,I'd been invited to Eritrea as an ambassador for Olympic Aid.

From composer, musician, and philanthropist(慈善家)Peter Buffett comes,a warm, wise, and inspirational, book that asks,“Which win you choose: the path of least resistance or the path of potentially greatest sailsfaction?”
You may think that with a last name like his, Buffett has enjoyed a life of endless privilege. But the son of billionaire investor Warren Buffett says that the only real inheritance handed down from his parents is a philosophy:Build your own path in life.It is a principle that has allowed him to follow his own passions, establish his own identity, and reap his own successes.
In Life Is What You Make It.Buffett expounds on(阐释)the strong set of values given to him by his trusting and broadminded mother, his hardworking and talented father, and the many life teachers he has met along the way.
Today's society,Buffett assumes, has begun to replace a work ethic, enjoying what you do,with a wealth ethic, honoring the payoff instead of the process. We confuse privilege with material wealth, character with external validation(认可).Yet,by focusing more on substance and less on reward,we can open doors of opportunity and strive toward a greater sense of fulfillment. In clear and brief terms, Buffett reveals a great truth:Life is random, neither fair nor unfair.
From there it becomes easy to recognize the equal dignity and value of every human life our circumstances may vary but our essence does not.We see that our journey in life rarely follows a straight line but is often met with false starts, crises, and mistakes. How we push through and persevere in these challenging moments is where we begin to create the life Of our dreams—from discovering our vocations to giving back to others.
Personal and instructive,Life Is What You Make It is about challenging your circumstances, taking control of your destiny, and living your life to the fullest.

Like a tired marriage, the relationship between libraries and publishers has long been dull.Ebooks, however, are causing heartache.Libraries know they need digital wares, but many publishers are too cautious about piracy(盗版)and lost sales to cooperate.Among the big six, only Random House and Harper Collins license ebooks with most libraries.
Publishers are wise to be nervous.Owners of ereaders (电子阅读器)are exactly the customers they need: booklovers with money. If these people switch to borrowing ebooks instead of buying them, what then? Electronic borrowing is awfully convenient.Unlike printed books, which must be checked out and returned to a physical library miles from where you live, book files can be downloaded at home. The files disappear from the device when they are due.
Elending is not simple, however. There are lots of different and often incompatible(不兼容的)ebook formats, devices and licenses. Most libraries use a company called OverDrive, which secures rights from publishers and provides ebooks and audio files in every format.Yet publishers and libraries are worried by OverDrive's global market dominance (优势),as the company can control fees and conditions.Publishers were annoyed when OverDrive cooperated with Amazon, the world's biggest online bookseller, last year.Owners of Amazon's Kindle ereader who want to borrow ebooks from libraries are now redirected to Amazon's website, where they must use their Amazon account to secure a loan.
According to Pew,an opinion researcher, library users are a perfect market for Amazon.Late last year Amazon introduced its Kindle Owners' Lending Library, which lets its best customers borrow one of thousands of popular books each month free of charge.
Library supporters argue that book borrowers are also book buyers and that libraries are vital spaces for readers to discover new works. Many were cheered by a recent Pew survey, which found that more than half of Americans with library cards say they prefer to buy their ebooks.
So publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search of the right balance.
Random House raised its licensing price's earlier this year, and Harper Collins limits libraries to lending its titles 26 times.

Ⅵ.概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Kuakuaqun, social media chat groups that people pay a little money to join and are paid to show kindness, support and comfort to others in the group, have become popular with young people.Users can now join a chat group on WeChat or QQ,where they are showered with praise and encouragement-for a price. On ecommerce sites like Taobao, membership in WeChat or QQ groups starts at 50 yuan for five minutes of compliments(表扬).Once you purchase a round of compliments on Taobao, the seller will contact you with an invitation to a group on WeChat. There, you will be praised from various people.
Zhang Youde is the Dean of the social management school at Shanghai University of political science and law.He thinks this phenomenon is a direct result of the information era when young people tend to express their personal feelings on the Internet to those they don't know.He also believes it has something to do with the traditional Chinese way of parenting that parents tend to withhold praises and encouragement. In China, when children do something wrong, parents usually criticize or even beat them because they think only in this way can children correct their improper behaviors. However, when children behave well, parents seldom praise them for fear that they may become too proud.
Deng Jianguo, associate professor of communication at Fudan University in Shanghai assumes the reason lies behind the highstress work and study environment faced by young people. To some extent,he said,it creates a positive and friendly environment for people to create an outlet for stress relief.Just simple words of encouragement in their lives can help them struggle to see through another day.
But the experts warn participants to keep a clear understanding about themselves despite the compliments from the strangers.Otherwise, they will fall into confusion and get lost. Many people go through each day reacting to events and just getting by rather than making conscious choices based on who they are. Therefore,it's hard to set goals, get motivated and determine the best course of action.
【参考范文】
Kuakuaqun, social media chat groups where people can pay for praise from strangers,is gaining popularity for several reasons.(要点1) Besides young people's preference to express themselves online, they seldom get praise from their parents in reality because of the conventional Chinese way of parenting.(要点2) Additionally,it provides an appropriate platform to relieve stress.(要点3) However, experts warn participants not to lose themselves.(要点4)
