(2020·湖北)Nature is amazing! Take a close look at the world of insects (昆虫) and you will discover many unbelievable things. Consider butterflies, for example. They have beautiful, colorful wings, and strong. steady flying skills. On summer days, we see them flying gracefully over flower gardens and wild fields.
But, do you know that butterflies live three separate lives before they become the flying insects we all know? They begin their lives as one thing, change into another, and then another. Finally, they change into beautiful flying insects. It’s true. And it’s one of the wonders of nature.
In the beginning, there is an egg, it’s usually small and colorful. A female butterfly lays an egg on a leaf of a plant. When you look at this tiny egg, it’s hard to believe that in a few days, it will become something completely different.
In time, it changes into a new life. No longer the small egg becomes a walking insect. This insect is called a caterpillar. It now has legs, eyes, a mouth and a large body. A new life has begun. The caterpillar eats, and eats, and eats. It can walk. It can see. But it is still not a butterfly. Soon, after growing big, the Caterpillar makes a cover for itself. It wraps (包裹) itself in this nice protective blanket and goes to sleep. This stage (阶段) of a butterfly’s life is known as the “pupa” stage.
What happens next is truly amazing!
After a period of time, the blanket breaks and a wet, weak butterfly appears. It now has six legs, a mouth, eyes and wings. Soon, the wings fill with blood, and the beautiful, colorful butterfly spreads its wings and flies away.
After a few weeks pass, this adult butterfly lays her eggs, and the cycle begins all over again.
This is just one example of the wonders of nature. Look around the natural world, and you will learn many truly amazing things.

(2021·湖北省直辖县级单位)Today, most people in Western cultures expect to eat meals with their own set of silverware(银制餐具), their own plates, and their own glasses. People use plates to hold their food and drink only from their own glasses. But Europeans didn’t always eat this way.
In the 1500s, members of the ruling classes(统治阶级)used knives to cut meat. Since they hardly had their own plates and bowls, they would eat the slice of meat off the tip of the knife. They would use shared spoons to eat soup and would dip bread or their fingers into serving bowls of gravy. There were a few rules for eating behavior. It was considered impolite to taste something from a spoon if it was being passed down to another person. If you had a bone(骨头)left in your hand after eating a chicken leg, you were expected to throw it politely under the table.
When some of the Europeans settled (定居) in the North America, they brought this eating style with them.
While the new settlers were sharing cups and dipping their fingers into bowls of food, European royalty and nobility(皇室与贵族)were staring to increase their tableware. They were also developing manners to go with their new knives, forks, spoons, plates, and napkins. They started to think of sharing cups or plates as unclean and even impolite. Their new manners made them feel higher than the lower classes.
By the 1700s, these new customs had spread to wealthy American settlers. As new landowners, they wanted to have a higher status(身份)than they would have had in Great Britain. They bought their own dishes and silverware and brought them to America.
By the late 1800s, mealtime manners had changed for everyone. As the American middle class grew, they needed more tableware to show off their wealth. There was also a complex(复杂的)system of manners by this time. This new emphasis on behavior influenced every aspect of everyday life.
And what about the 21st century? Do our manners continue to become more complex? Maybe yes, maybe no.
10.Which of the following supports the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A.They brought this eating style with them.
B.They were starting to increase their tableware.
C.They cut meat with knives and ate it with fingers.
D.They were supposed to throw the bones under the table.
11.Why did the wealthy American settlers buy silverware and dishes?
A.They wanted to show their higher status.
B.They hated to share cups and plates again.
C.They hoped to become members of royalty.
D.They made more money in America than in Great Britain
12.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Mealtime manners are developing all the time.
B.Mealtime manners came from the North America.
C.Mealtime manners include tableware and table manners.
D.Mealtime manners nowadays are much simpler than before.

(2022·湖北)Starting with this fall term, students in primary and middle schools will have at least one course every week on basic household skills such as cleaning and cooking, according to a new curriculum standard (课程标准) for labor education in compulsory (强制的;义务的) education made by the government. Should household skills be made compulsory at schools?
Michael: By learning basic skills like cooking, cleaning and maintaining home appliances (电器) children can learn how to take care of themselves and live independently. Parents won’t always be there to help their children with every problem they’ll meet in their lives. They need to learn new things, make mistakes, solve problems and grow from their experiences. It is necessary for children to learn these important lifesaving skills as early as possible.
Eliza: Many students have to study for the whole day and simply don’t have the time to develop their interests. A compulsory household skills class can give them more chances to meet various aspects of life and help them discover different passions. Some children who are interested in food or those who have an interest in maintaining home appliances can develop these skills in the class.
Jade: There are only limited hours in a school day. With all the required classes there is not enough time for household courses. I think it is something that parents need to do at home with their children, having them help around the house with cooking, cleaning, washing, planting. etc. Remember school can’t teach your children everything. They need you, too!
Ben: Household courses should be made optional (可选择的) for students. They should be given the choice to take whatever they like. If one wants to cook dishes, he or she is welcome. But it should not be made compulsory and forced onto every student.
Linda: Schools should have cooking classes. Children will be taught about their food, where it comes from, how to use the cooking tools properly and how to cook nutritiously. Many parents don’t have this knowledge and have no time or energy to do this. A household class would provide the knowledge and training that parents are unable to give their children.
Maria: I learned some basic cooking skills from my mother, but most of them were learned after I graduated from college, from cooking books and online short videos. Household skills like cooking are much more useful than a lot of what is taught in schools, but it does require some fully equipped (配备齐全的) kitchens. I hope these classes will benefit (使受益) students and not be seen as window dressing.
16.Jade thinks household courses ________.
A.should be made optional B.are good for students’ growth
C.should be taught by parents at home D.can help children develop their interests
17.The underlined phrase “window dressing” probably means “________”.
A.good look but not clever B.good form but not achievable
C.good taste but not healthy D.good style but not popular
18.The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.show different ideas about household courses B.introduce something about household courses
C.encourage students to study household courses D.tell parents the importance of household courses

I caught a cold. It was really a bad cold. Actually, the doctor later told me that I had the flu (流感).
My head was pounding. My throat was hurting. My body was aching. My voice became hoarse and I could hardly speak. I never experienced anything like this before. Worst of all, my sore throat was so serious that I couldn’t even swallow (吞咽)!
I knew I should drink more fluids—water, soup or juice—and maybe take some medicine. But I couldn’t. Each time I tried to swallow, it hurt so much. So my dad took me to the hospital.
A doctor came in. He checked my throat. He then checked my lungs. After his examination, he said, “Nothing to worry about. You have the flu.”
“Why is it so serious?” I asked. “Can you give me some medicine so that I don’t suffer as much?”
“No.” the doctor said. “No medicine can cure (治愈) your flu. Don’t be sad. Your body is an amazing thing. It will cure itself without any help.” “What? My body will fix things on its own?” I cried in disbelief.
“Yes, your body’s immune system (免疫系统) will fight the virus (病毒) for you. No doctor or medicine will cure you.” repeated the doctor.
My tears rushed out. I had not realized this in the past. Everything had always seemed so natural. I’ve had my meals every day for thirteen years. I drink water like taking a breath—without thinking about it at all.
Now, I understand that even a simple thing like swallowing is like a miracle (奇迹). The parts of my body do their jobs amazingly well—and yet quietly, without me even noticing.
I don’t remember how many days it took me to be well again, but I do remember what my father told me. He said that we should all appreciate our bodies and the miracle of how they are built.
