Long ago, there was a very scary animal called Nian. It was big and strong. It looked like a lion with a horn(角) on its head.

Every Chinese New Year’s Eve, Nian would visit a village near the sea. It would eat the rice, corps, chickens, cows and even people. In the village, everyone was afraid of Nian. They didn’t know how to stop Nian. So they would run and hide in the mountains. They didn’t stop doing that before a stranger(陌生人) came to their village one year.

The stranger was hungry and looking for food. A kind old woman gave(给) him something to eat. Then she told him about Nian. The stranger said, “Let me stay in your house this evening.
