The world’s oceans are some of the most interesting and breathtaking places on the entire planet. A lot of these oceans have witnessed a variety of disappearances and other mysteries, most of which cannot and have not been explained by modern science. Here are some interesting unsolved sea mysteries of the world.
USS Scorpion
In February 1969, the USS Scorpion, an American submarine, departed from Norfolk, Virginia, on its way towards the Mediterranean. The crew had almost a decade of experience, and yet the sub disappeared and broke into pieces on the sea floor. There were 99 men aboard the sub, all of whom lost their lives.
Baltic Sea Sub
In the later half of 2014 a mysterious vessel(大船) was spotted by Swedish citizens, many of whom described it as a Russian submarine, in the Baltic Sea. The military spent much time in investigating, but found no sign of the mysterious sub. The search was named “the hunt for Reds in October”.
Bermeja Island
During the 1970s, Bermeja Island served as a bit of a marker for Mexico and their economic zone. Around 20 years later, the island disappeared without any sign. Along with the island, numerous important documents about major oil reserves also went missing.
Gulf of Mexico Shipwreck
In 2001, Exxon Mobil was laying pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico when they ran into a shipwreck around 2,600 feet under the surface. Upon exploring the shipwreck, archaeologists(考古学家) believed it to be a terrible spell(符咒), as something would constantly go wrong when they went down to explore.
SS Edmund Fitzgerald
Lake Superior is so large that it behaves like an inland ocean, including terrific storms. In November 1975, one such storm struck the vessel SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which was headed to Detroit. The Fitzgerald disappeared after communications were lost. A week later, a sonar(声呐) ship found the vessel 500 feet under the water. Not one body was found, though.
21.Why does the author think of USS Scorpion as a mystery?
A. Because 99 men died aboard the sub.
B. Because the sub still sank even with experienced crew.
C. Because it lost its way towards the Mediterranean.
D. Because there is no information of the unknown sub.
22.What do Baltic Sea Sub and Gulf of Mexico Shipwreck have in common?
A. Both are highly put on a bad spell. B. Both are said to be Russian vessels.
C. Both are found on the beaches. D. Both the names of the vessels are unknown
23.Which mystery is different from the others?
A. Bermeja Island. B. SS Edmund Fitzgerald.
C. Gulf of Mexico Shipwreck. D.USS Scorpion.
B
When 45-year-old Randy Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic (胰腺的) cancer, he chose to focus on living rather than dying. As a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Pausch was asked to deliver a “last lecture”. This well-known campus tradition allowed professors to share worldly wisdom with students as if they were dying and had one last lecture to give.
The only difference in Pausch’s case is that Pausch really was dying, but it only motivated him more. He delivered his last lecture, “Really achieving your childhood dreams” on Sept. 18, 2007.
Pausch began by sharing several of his boyhood dreams, some of which he had achieved and the others he hadn’t. He described the importance of having dreams and how anyone can still learn a lot by reaching for those dreams, even if they don’t always succeed. He shared the values learned through his experience, which he hoped to pass on to others: hard work, laughter and gratitude, honesty, character.
Pausch’s last lecture received a great deal of praise and attention. It became a crazy YouTube hit, and in October 2007, he presented an abridged (删节的) version on The Oprah Winfrey Show. He turned the lecture into a book by the same name, which quickly became a best-seller. Readers were deeply moved by the book’s representation of Pausch’s lifelong philosophy and the way it revealed the biggest source of his motivation—his three young children.
Pausch passed away on July 25, 2008, but his voice lives on in the recorded lecture and his book. He continues to motivate us all by encouraging us to never give up our childhood dreams—a source of inspiration that can never run dry.
24.Why was Pausch asked to give his last lecture?
A. To cure his cancer. B. To make him have a better head.
C. To teach the students. D. To achieve his dream.
25. What was Pausch’s lecture mainly about?
A. His private life in boyhood. B. The experience learned from others.
C. The reason for his success. D. Having dreams and good values.
26. Which of the following motivated Pausch most?
A. His children. B. His dreams. C. His work. D. His students.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The meaning of life B. Give the last lecture
C. Keep on dreaming D. Motivation from life

In recent years, many Americans of both sexes and various ages have become interested in improving their bodies. They have become devoted to physical fitness. The need to exercise has almost become compulsive(禁不住的)with many persons who have a strong desire to be more physically fit.
By nature, Americans are enthusiastic(充满热情的)about their hobbies and pastimes. They apply this enthusiasm to jogging/running. As a result, there are running clubs to join and many books and magazines to read about running.
The desire to be physically fit is explained by a “passion” for good health. The high rate of heart attacks in the 1960s caused an increase on the part of the public in improving the human body. Middle-aged men especially suffer from heart attacks. Thus, they are one group more strongly interested in physical exercise. In fact, many doctors encourage their patients to become more physically active, especially those who have sedentary jobs. It is interesting to note that the rate of heart attacks began to decrease in the 1970s and it is still decreasing. Physical fitness currently enjoys a favored role in the United States. It is a new “love” that many Americans have cherished. Will it last long? Only time can tell-- or until another “new passion” comes along.
28. In recent years, many Americans have become interested in improving their bodies because _________.
A. they are enthusiastic about their hobbies and pastimes

C. there are many running clubs to join
D. there are many books and magazines to read about running
29. The passage implies that _____ is a great favorite of many Americans, men and women, old and young.
A. going in for all kinds of sports B. joining running clubs.
C. jogging/running D. reading books and magazines about running
30. Middle-aged men suffering from heart attacks ______.
A. are more interested in taking physical exercise
B. are compulsive joggers
C. are enthusiastic and energetic about hobbies and pastimes
D. are encouraged by their doctors to go in for jogging/running
31. In the sentence “In fact, many doctors encourage their patients to become more physically active, especially those who have sedentary jobs,” the word “sedentary” means_______
A. involving physical work B. secondary
C. energy-consuming D. needing much sitting
D
Expressing emotions is difficult as it's not always encouraged in society. People rely on comfort zones and a secure mask to get them through the day. You may wonder,
"Why am I so sad?" and not know how to answer that question. We ignore warning signs of sadness, depression and other forms of suffering because we cannot be open about such feelings in society. It shouldn't be something we are afraid of. With the release of emotion, we find who we want to be and quickly to a previous good condition. Sadness is one emotion of many. But it is often the one most ignored. We don’t want to appear weak to others.
Sadness is different from depression. Typically, sadness comes and goes, while depression holds us down for long. When feeling sad, you are most likely feeling alone, helpless and hopeless. But depression lasts almost nonstop at a depth that can overrule your behavior.
We feel it our duty to be our own heroes. We feel like we need to hold on rather than let go and let others in. When this happens, sadness increases, and we are no longer engaged with those we love. When sadness hits, we have to tell someone and build a support system. You just need to allow others to see your weaknesses, which aren't even true weaknesses. Feeling sad is not a weakness. Holding back in an effort to appear strong is, however, a weakness.
When people know what you're going through, they can better assist you.
Our sadness does not show what we are worth. It only tells us the story we tell ourselves. And when we change that story, we can breathe. We start to realize we deserve to be happy. Self talk like "I am worth it" is sending mes-sage of love and hope to ourselves when the world fails to do so for you.
32.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. People tend to release bad emotions. B. People express their emotions easily.
C. People usually hide their emotions. D. People often lose control of emotions.
33. How is sadness different from depression?
A. Depression is easier to recover. B. Sadness lasts for shorter periods.
C. Depression leads to hopelessness. D. Sadness can overrule people's behavior.
34. What is a weakness according to the author?
A. Turning to others for help. B. Pretending to be strong.
C. Admitting our weaknesses. D. Telling the truth to someone,
35. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Sending ourselves positive messages. B. Asking others for advice.
C. Keeping the sad stories in mind. D. Learning from our own past experience
