Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic (酒鬼) parents, was about to be lost forever by the education system. Obviously, he could read, yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing. He had been failing since first grade, as he was passed on from grade to grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve year old, yet, Steve went unnoticed... until Miss White appeared.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful redhead. Steve admired her actually. Yet, he never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss White. Oddly, Steve never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss White’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams. “Steve!!” Frightened, he turned to look at her. “Pay attention! You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this… The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
After that, it was war! Steve still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“You’re smart enough! You’ll see a change!” Nothing happened.
“Give yourself a chance! Don’t give up on your life!” Nothing.
“Steve! Please! I really care about you!” Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it!! Someone cared about him? Someone, totally unreachable and perfect, CARED ABOUT HIM??!!
Steve went home from school, thoughtful, that afternoon.
The following Monday Steve arrived at school on time > and he waited for Miss White to enter the classroom. She walked in.

We were three thousand miles away from home on a Random Acts of Kindness and Volunteerism Road Trip. Our funds were running low, so we had two goals today. Firstly, try out our new “Smile!” signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread. Secondly, raise a pitiful $20 a piece by doing street performances. Singing, drawing cartoons, storytelling… as long as it is enough for the trip to Portland.
We weren’t sure how people would react to our signs. I nervously raised one up and shouted “Hi there!” to a young couple. They looked over, momently confused, then read my sign and broke into smiles. It worked.
Before long, our signs were popular. Strangers stopped to ask us about them. The signs are more than an invitation to “Smile!”. They’re an excuse to connect with strangers and to remember this world is full of good people. We got so wrapped up in our “Smile!” project that we forgot our other goal. Before we knew it, the sun was setting, and we had no money for our trip to Portland.
Then we noticed that a blind musician was playing guitar when suddenly a passing crowd kicked over his change jar. Change and cash scattered everywhere. Before we could run over, another man rushed to collect all the money for him. And we met the dogooder, Jared. “We want to praise you on your good deed,” I said. Jared looked at my signs curiously. We told him about our road trip, which reminded him of something similar he did when he was young. He seemed moved.

Christmas was hanging around. Six-year-old David was thinking what presents he could get from Santa. He wanted slippers; he wanted a silk tie; he wanted some toys. And school starting soon, he also hoped to get something about schooling. In order to get Santa to know what he needed, he thought he would write a letter to Santa, which he believed would bring him those presents. He found a sheet and made a list of the items on it, and then bent down to post the letter up the chimney, waiting for the winds to take it up.
David got up very early on the Christmas morning. He searched his room carefully, but to his disappointment, he didn't find the presents he hoped for. Hadn't Santa received the letter? Was he too busy to send him the gifts? Although feeling a little upset, David was convinced that Santa would not forget him and he was bound to receive the items.
Many years had passed and 2019 came. In an old house, a young builder, Lewis Shaw was removing the fireplace with his colleagues when he suddenly found a small piece of paper, which was still in perfect condition even if it had turned yellow. He picked it up and unfolded it. It was a letter written to Santa. The touching hand-written note read: Dear Father Christmas ,
Please can you send me a drum , box of chalks , slippers , silk tie , pencil box , any little toys you have to spare.
Love
David
It was then signed off with lots of kisses.
This was the very letter written by David and the house was where he had lived during his childhood! The letter struck Shaw so much. How simple Christmas once was! David didn't ask for much, just the things he just needed. Nowadays kids always wanted expensive gifts and took it for granted.

【答案】Then he said, “Look! I'd like to donate.” We told him, “No, thanks! We are fine. We've collected plenty of money.” We lied. “Please let me donate. It will make me feel like I'm a part of this adventure,” he insisted. And then Jared opened his wallet and pulled out four $20 bills. The money was exactly what we had intended to raise that day.
We were astonished. It seemed as if he had known something somehow. Seeing our expression, he smiled, “I once did something similar when I was young. I know random acts of kindness mean a lot sometimes. I just hope what I have done can do you a favor. I just hope that you can spread smiles to more people. ” Hearing what he said, we were all moved. Indeed, smiles are an excuse to connect with strangers and to remember this world is full of good people. With the bills in hand, we said goodbye to Jared and continued our way to Portland, smiling.

Shaw decided to find out the author of the letter. He shared a photo of the note on Facebook. He also spoke to the neighbors on both sides of the house. Within two days he connected with David, the now 78-year-old man living in a town nearby. They met at the old house, where Shaw returned him the letter. What a great surprise it was that he could read the letter again so many years after he wrote it!
A great surprise was on the way. After a pleasant chat, Shaw handed David a box. Inside it David found all the presents he had listed in the letter. In fact, it had taken Shaw much time to collect these presents. He didn't even know Rupert Annual was a magazine for children before he's able to get one. David was quite excited-he finally had his Christmas wishes fulfilled!
