1 Humur has been an essential part f human behaviur fr thusands f years. There is cmedy in the texts f Ancient Greece, and medieval writings are filled with jkes. While these same jkes might nt be as funny t us nw as they were then, their authrs understd that humur culd nt nly entertain but als thrw new light n sensitive r emtive issues.
2 Clser t mdern times, smene wh is remembered fr his ability t cmbine humur with mre serius messages is American writer, Mark Twain. Twain’s particular style f writing is funny and ften mischievus. Fr example, in his classic nvel The Adventures f Tm Sawyer, he famusly says, “Writing is easy. All yu have t d is crss ut the wrng wrds.” But he is equally well knwn fr his witty remarks in his everyday interactins with peple. Fr instance, while n a lecturing tur f the United States, Twain went int a barber’s shp t get a haircut and a shave. The barber, nt recgnising him, asked if he had a ticket t the lecture. When Twain replied that he didn’t, the barber tld him that if he wanted t g t the event he wuld have t stand, as there were n seats left in the theatre. Twain’s respnse was, “That’s just my luck. I always have t stand when that fellw lectures!”
4 Lin’s quick wit helped make him famus as a master f humur. Once, having been invited t dinner at a university, he was put n the spt when the president suddenly asked him t give a speech. Thinking n his feet, Lin started t tell a stry abut a cruel Rman emperr wh tried t feed a man t wild animals. First came a lin. The man whispered smething in the lin’s ear, after which the lin shk its head and walked away unhappily. Then alng came a tiger. Again, the man whispered in the tiger’s ear. The tiger lked shcked and hurried away. “What did yu say t my animals?” said the emperr, astnished. “I tld them they had t make a speech after eating me fr dinner.” Lin’s audience rared with laughter. With this little jke, Lin was able t make peple laugh, while gently telling ff the president.
5 Bth Twain and Lin understd that humur isn’t just abut laughter, but is a way f life and a tl that can be used t illuminate the wrld. Lin even created an equatin t explain this cncept: Reality + Dreams + Humur = Wisdm. Living and wrking with thers can smetimes be cmplicated, and humur makes this easier. Sharing jkes and laughing tgether can bring individuals and even cmmunities tgether. Indeed, sme may argue that ur need fr humur is almst as great as ur need fr water and air. In the wrds f Mark Twain, “Humr is mankind’s greatest blessing”.
After reading
1. Organize infrmatin frm the passage and cmplete the diagram. 2. Review the basic structure f an argument. Intrductin: state yur claim Bdy: give yur reasns + supprting details Cnclusin: restate yur claim
Further thinking
Hw d yu understand the equatin? Cnsider the fllwing questins: What is yur understanding f “reality" and “dreams"? What is the functin f “humur" in this equatin? What is yur understanding f "wisdm"?D yu agree with Lin’s definitin f wisdm? Why?
Living and wrking with thers can smetimes be cmplicated, and humr makes this easier.S then, wisdm, r the highest type f thinking, cnsists in tning dwn ur dreams r idealism with a gd sense f humr, supprted by reality itself. (Lin, The Imprtance f Living)
Excerpt frm The Imprtance f Living
Human sciety wuld be like an idealistic cuple frever getting tired f ne place and changing their residence regularly nce every three mnths, fr the simple reasn that n ne place is ideal and the place where ne is nt seems always better because ne is nt there. Very frtunately, man is als gifted with a sense f humr, whse functin, as I cnceive it, is t exercise criticism f man's dreams, and bring them in tuch with the wrld f reality. It is imprtant that man dreams, but it is perhaps equally imprtant that he can laugh at his wn dreams. That is a great gift, and the Chinese have plenty f it.
The sense f humr, which I shall discuss at mre length in a later chapter, seems t be very clsely related t the sense f reality, r realism. If the jker is ften cruel in disillusining(使..醒悟) the idealist, he nevertheless(不过) perfrms a very imprtant functin right there by nt letting the idealist bump his head against the stne wall f reality and receive a ruder shck. He als gently eases the tensin f the ht-headed enthusiast and makes him live lnger. By preparing him fr disillusin, there is prbably less pain in the final impact, fr a humrist is always like a man charged with the duty f breaking a sad news gently t a dying patient. Smetimes the gentle warning frm a humrist saves the dying patient's life. If idealism and disillusin must necessarily g tgether in this wrld, we must say that life is cruel, rather than the jker wh reminds us f life's cruelty.

Try intrducing Rwan Atkinsn
Appreciate the writing by me.
Rwan Atkinsn is a British cmedy actr wh has a magical appeal t many fans bth in England and many ther cuntries. He is regarded as ne f the best cmedy actrs after Charlie Chaplin wh knws hw t use bdy and facial features t make peple laugh. Fr me, the funniest thing abut Rwan Atkinsn is the way he uses facial expressins when he acts as Mr. Bean in the Mr.Bean sitcm. In the series, Mr. Bean is like a child in a grwn man's bdy wh tries t slve varius prblems presented by everyday tasks and ften causes disruptin in the prcess. It’s amusing t see that purity. I think the pwer f Rwan Atkinsn’s wrks is nt nly in his acting, but als in the attitude he tries t cnvey thrugh the characters and stries. Thugh Mr. Bean always encunters trubles in the series, the stries have a happy ending because f his ptimism, wit and kindness. And I think this is an amazing message that attracts me tremendusly.
