If a human can get an artificial limb, why not an animal? Easier said than done however, as while there is a tremendous amount of ongoing research for human artificial limbs, there is hardly any for animals.
But Dr Tapesh Mathur, a vet living in Jaipur, did not want to wait around anymore. He is credited with making the “Krishna Limb”, India’s first artificial limb for animals. Tapesh has been designing artificial limbs for animals since 2015 and to date, has helped 90 animals adapt to using an artificial limb.
From design to production, Tapesh does all the work by himself at his home-workshop. He provides the artificial limbs for free. Tapesh said, “I could not bear to see their (the cattle’s) pain in shelters. These animals could not voice their anxiety as humans can, but they felt the pain all the same. They waited helplessly for food or for someone to clean them. And I kept thinking if we can help humans walk again, why can’t something similar be done for these animals? Thus I began my research.”
Tapesh designed his first artificial limb for a two-year-old cow named Krishna, who learnt to walk using the limb. Producing these artificial limbs wasn’t an easy task initially, and Tapesh required raw material, which was expensive. Polypropylene, which is used for manufacturing artificial limbs, is only supplied in large quantities by suppliers, and Tapesh had to source it from Mumbai using his own savings.
Now, Tapesh designs customisable artificial limbs for different animals. “We generally work with cows, horses, and dogs, but have started receiving applications for other animals as well. Recently, we got a request for a limb for a pet parrot. We are still working on the design.”
There are certain steps involved in designing. First, Tapesh takes the necessary measurements, based on which the artificial limb is shaped. The real challenge comes when Tapesh has to visit animals living in remote areas as his patients often cannot be brought to him. Once the artificial limb is ready, Tapesh has to visit the animal and attach it for free.
    4. Why does the author ask a question at the beginning of the text?
    A. To stress the importance of animals. B. To show the value of an artificial limb.
    C. To carry out research on human artificial limbs. D. To arouse readers’ interest in the following topic.
    5. What do we know about Dr Tapesh Mathur from the text?
    A. He has raised about 90 animals.
    B. He works with a famous designer.
    C. He has started designing artificial limbs recently.
    D. He is the first Indian to make artificial limbs for animals.
    6. How did Tapesh get raw materials for artificial limbs?
    A. By turning to the government for help. B. By buying them with his own money.
    C. By borrowing them from companies. D. By asking his friends for help.
    7. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
    A. Animals Tapesh wants to help. B. The cost of making an artificial limbs.
    C. Necessary things about making artificial limbs. D. The real challenge Tapesh faces in remote areas.
D 5. D 6. B 7. C

Research shows people have a tendency to seek out information during uncertain times — it’s a natural coping mechanism (机制). But is continuous information-seeking on social media, sometimes called doomscrolling (末日刷刷刷), helpful during a pandemic, or any time?
Research on the effects of bad news on mood suggests exposure to negative COVID news is likely to be dangerous to our emotional well being. For instance, one study conducted in March 2020 involving more than 6,000 Americans found that the more time participants spent consuming COVID news in a day, the unhappier they felt.
These findings are striking but leave a few key questions unanswered. Does doomscrolling make people unhappy, or are unhappy people just more likely to doomscroll? How much time spent doomscrolling is a problem? And what would happen if, instead of doomscrolling, we were “ kindness scrolling ” — reading about humanity’s positive responses to a global crisis?
To find out answers to these questions, researchers conducted a study where they showed hundreds of people real-world content on either Twitter or YouTube for two to four minutes. The Twitter feeds and YouTube videos featured either general news about the COVID, or news about kindness during COVID. Researchers then measured these participants’ moods using a questionnaire, and compared their moods with participants who did not engage with any content at all.
People who were shown general COVID-related news experienced lower moods than people who were shown nothing at all. Meanwhile, people who were shown COVID news stories involving acts of kindness didn’t experience the same decline in mood, but also didn’t gain the boost in mood they’ d predicted. These findings suggest that spending as little as two to four minutes consuming negative news about COVID-19 can have a negative impact on our mood.
Researchers are still working on what people can do to look after themselves, and make time on social media more pleasurable.
    8. How did the author introduce the topic of the text?
    A. By asking a question. B. By telling a story.
    C. By listing lots of figures. D. By answering a question.
    9. Why did researchers conduct the study mentioned in paragraph 4?
    A. To figure out why people like doomscrolling.
    B. To find out what news has bad effects on emotion.
    C. To figure out the answers to the few key questions.
    D. To find out what news people like about doomscrolling.
    10. What can we learn about the relation between news and emotion?
    A. No news may lead people to low mood.
    B. General COVID-related news may cause low spirits.
    C. COVID news of kindness may boost mood.
    D. 2-4 minutes of COVID-19 news viewing doesn’t affect mood.
    11. What is unmentioned in the text?
    A. The research time. B. The results of the study.
    C. The study institution. D. The number of participants.
A 9. C 10. B 11. C
根据第一段“But is continuous information-seeking on social media, sometimes called doomscrolling (末日刷刷刷), helpful during a pandemic, or any time?”(但是在社交媒体上持续地搜寻信息(有时被称为末日刷刷刷)在疫情期间或其他时候真的有所助益吗?) 故选A。
根据第四段“To find out answers to these questions, researchers conducted a study where they showed hundreds of people real-world content on either Twitter or YouTube for two to four minutes. ”(为了找到这些问题的答案,研究人员进行了一项研究,他们在Twitter或YouTube上向数百人展示了两到四分钟的真实内容。)可知,第4段提到研究人员进行的研究,目的为了找出几个关键问题的答案。故选C。
    【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“These findings suggest that spending as little as two to four minutes consuming negative news about COVID-19 can have a negative impact on our mood.”(但是在社交媒体上持续地搜寻信息(这些发现表明,只要花2到4分钟的时间阅读有关COVID-19的负面新闻,就会对我们的情绪产生负面影响。)
根据第二段“one study conducted in March 2020 involving more than 6,000 Americans found that the more time participants spent consuming COVID news in a day, the unhappier they felt.”(2020年3月进行的一项涉及6000多名美国人的研究发现,参与者一天中了解COVID消息的时间越长,他们感到越不快乐。) 以及倒数第二段“These findings suggest that spending as little as two to four minutes consuming negative news about COVID-19 can have a negative impact on our mood.”(但是在社交媒体上持续地搜寻信息(这些发现表明,只要花2到4分钟的时间阅读有关COVID-19的负面新闻,就会对我们的情绪产生负面影响。)
    D
Industry must speed up investment in new technologies that allow manufacture (大量制造) of materials using renewable electricity if net zero emission (排放) targets are to be met, research led by the University of Leeds warns.
Ensuring that no electricity is produced from fossil fuels by 2050 is vital for achieving net zero. However, its effect will be limited if industry cannot use this electricity. Steel manufacturing alone accounts for a tenth of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in industrialised countries but latest estimates suggest new technologies to manufacture steel using electricity will not become fully operational until at least 2040.
The lead author of the study, Dr Alan Grainger, from the University of Leeds School of Geography, said, “ Delays in replacing existing steel manufacturing capacity represent a crucial ‘lock in’ constraint (约束) on achieving net zero. ” Humanity’s great dependence on steel, which accounts for 94% of all metal production, is a huge blockage that cannot be ignored, The UK Net Zero Strategy, published last week, recognizes this problem, but lacks detail on how to deal with it.
Governments should strengthen international carbon reporting standards for energy-intensive industries, the paper says, so that total levels of CO2 production during the manufacture and lifetime of materials can be measured more obviously in assessing progress towards national net zero targets. The carbon price also needs to rise to make it economically viable (可行的) to introduce new manufacturing technologies with low CO2 emission.
    12. What is the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 1?
    A. To warn industry not to use electricity. B. To show the amount of CO2 emission.
    C. To attract investment for the research. D. To give a warning to industry.
    13. What is the key to achieving net zero?
    A. Using wood instead of steel. B. Using less electricity from fossil fuels.
    C. Using technical instruments. D. Using electricity from green energy.
    14. What does the underlined word “ blockage ” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Policy. B. Influence. C. Barrier. D. Advantage.
    15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Industry must prepare for green electricity
    B. Industry must achieve net zero emission target
    C. Industry must speed up investment in electricity
    D. Governments should strengthen carbon standards
D 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据文章第一段“Industry must speed up investment in new technologies that allow manufacture (大量制造) of materials using renewable electricity if net zero emission (排放) targets are to be met, research led by the University of Leeds warns.(如果净零排放目标要实现。工业必须加快在允许使用可再生电力材料大量制造的新技术方面的投资,如果由利兹大学所做的研究警告道。)”可知作者写第一段的目的就是要给工业一个警告。故选D项。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Ensuring that no electricity is produced from fossil fuels by 2050 is vital for achieving net zero. However, its effect will be limited if industry cannot use this electricity. (确保到2050年不再使用化石燃料发电对实现净零排放至关重要.然而,如果不能使用这些电力,其效果将是有限的。)”可知实现净零排放的关键是停止使用化石燃料发电,即使用来自于绿色能源的电。故选D项。
    【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第三段““Delays in replacing existing steel manufacturing capacity represent a crucial ‘lock in’ constraint (约束) on achieving net zero.”Humanity’s great dependence on steel, which accounts for 94% of all metal production, is a huge blockage that cannot be ignored,(取代现有的钢铁生产能力方面的延迟代表了一个至关重要的在实现净零排放方面的锁定约束。人类对于占有金属生产的94%钢铁的巨大依赖是一个不可忽视的巨大障碍。)”可知净零排放不能尽快实现的原因之一是延迟取代现有的钢铁生产能力,第二个就是人类对于钢的巨大依赖。所以可以推测此处的“blockage”是影响实现净零排放的一个不利因素。故选C项。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Industry must speed up investment in new technologies that allow manufacture (大量制造) of materials using renewable electricity if net zero emission (排放) targets are to be met, research led by the University of Leeds warns.( 如果净零排放目标要实现,工业必须加快在允许使用可再生电力材料大量制造的新技术方面的投资,由利兹大学所做的研究警告道。)” 故选A项。
What is culture? It is difficult to define. ____16____ For some people it means literature, music and art. Others define it as beliefs, ways of behaving and the ideas of a particular group. Another broader definition says that it is all the knowledge and values of a society. Lord Raglan, a British soldier and author in the 20th century once famously said, “Culture is roughly everything we do and monkeys don’t.”
As you can see, there are different definitions of culture as there are different societies. One useful starting point is the idea of two types of culture. They are culture with a capital C and culture with a small c. Culture with a capital C refers to music, literature and art. It also includes facts and statistics about a national group or society. ____17____ A person is cultured if they know a lot about culture with a capital C. Many English-speaking countries now have citizenship tests for new immigrants. ____18____ Examples might include “ Who wrote Hamlet?” or “Where does the Prime Minister of Canada Live?”
Culture with a small c refers to beliefs, values, traditions and the everyday life of a particular community. ____19____ In other words, they have lots of different cultures. Culture with a small c can be different from one part of a country to another. Travelers and people who do business with people from different places are often more interested in culture with a small c. Example questions could include “What time do Americans finish work? ” or “Do Germans shake hands or kiss when they meet each other?”
____20____ Culture gives a person a special identity. Culture gives a community or a country a unique character. Whatever the definition, culture plays an important part in everybody’s life.
    A. How many definitions of culture exist?
    B. The USA and Britain are multicultural.
    C. Everybody’s definition of culture is identical.
    D. These contain many questions about the country’s culture.
    E. Everyone knows what it is but explains it in different ways.
    F. People think this kind of information is valuable and important.
    G. One thing we can all agree on is that culture is about being different.
E 17. F 18. D 19. B 20. G
根据上文“What is culture? It is difficult to define.(文化是什么?很难给它下定义)”以及后文“For some people it means literature, music and art. Others define it as beliefs, ways of behaving and the ideas of a particular group. Another broader definition says that it is all the knowledge and values of a society.(对一些人来说,它意味着文学、音乐和艺术。其他人则将其定义为信仰、行为方式和特定群体的想法。另一个更广泛的定义是,它是一个社会的所有知识和价值观)”可知,上文提到文化很难定义,结合后文列举了不同人对文化的看法,可知每个人对文化的解释都不同。故E选项“每个人都知道它是什么,只是解释的方式不同”符合语境,故选E。
    【17题详解】
根据上文“As you can see, there are different definitions of culture as there are different societies. One useful starting point is the idea of two types of culture. They are culture with a capital C and culture with a small c. Culture with a capital C refers to music, literature and art. It also includes facts and statistics about a national group or society.(正如你所看到的,不同的社会对文化有不同的定义。两种文化的概念是一个有用的起点。它们是大写C的文化和小写C的文化。大写C的文化指的是音乐、文学和艺术。它还包括关于一个国家团体或社会的事实和统计数据)”以及后文“A person is cultured if they know a lot about culture with a capital C. Many English-speaking countries now have citizenship tests for new immigrants.(如果一个人对大写C的文化了解很多,那么他就是有文化的。现在,许多讲英语的国家对新移民都有公民身份测试)”可知,本句是在说明人们对大写C文化包括关于一个国家团体或社会的事实和统计数据的看法:认为这种信息是有价值和重要的。故F选项“人们认为这种信息是有价值和重要的”符合语境,故选F。
    【18题详解】
根据上文“A person is cultured if they know a lot about culture with a capital C. 第二节(满分25分)
At Christmas 2020, a set of 4-year-old twins living in Kansas wrote letters to Santa, tied them to red balloons, and let them go. Although their mother, Leticia Flores-Gonzalez, knew it was something like a message in a bottle, she encouraged her daughters to let their balloons fly in the air in the hope that they would reach Santa.
It was a windy day, and she just thought they were going to get lost, or get caught up in a tree. And, while one of the balloons did get lost, the other one reached its destination. It flew all the way to Louisiana, where Alvin Bamburg found it. The man had no idea what the balloon could be bringing with it, but when he read the letter, he decided that he just had to do something.
Just like any Santa’s helper would do, he prepared to deliver the presents to the sweet girls. But, in order to do so, he had to find them. He went online and, after some serious research, he got in touch with’ the family. After contacting the mother, he reached out to the family. Together with his friends, he collected all the presents that the girls had asked for.
Alvin managed to package most of them and send them to the family. Although the girls were delighted to get their precious presents, one was missing. The girls had also asked for a puppy, but there was no puppy in the package they received.
This was Alvin’s last and biggest surprise. He got a puppy and drove all the way to the girls’ home, about 600 miles away, to deliver the last but greatest gift ever.
When the girls saw the man arriving with a dog in his arms, they couldn’t hide their excitement. They were so grateful to Santa’s helper Alvin for all the gifts he had brought to them.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“We are very blessed,” the mother said.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Alvin Bamburg was also excited at seeing the girls’ happiness.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“We are very blessed,” the mother said. She was so grateful that she couldn’t hold back her tears. She was grateful not only because Alvin Bamburg took the great trouble to fulfill her daughters’ wishes, but also felt so lucky that he indeed planted warm seeds in her daughters’ hearts. The kindness took root in the girls, soul. What they experienced in their childhood would make them remember forever. She believed that the world would be colorful in her daughters’ eyes.
Alvin Bamburg was also excited at seeing the girls’ happiness. As the man explained, delivering the gifts to the girls not only made them happy, but also him. “If you can make just one person smile, not only will it help them, but it will make you feel much better.” He was happy he could be a Santa Claus, and make the girls believe in what they believe. He hold the belief that, in fact, anyone can be Santa’s helper. They only need to have a big heart and be willing to make others happy.
