    Tips

    Step 1 Warming up

     

    In this part, T can tell Ss that theyre going to learn some Asian festivals in this class.(目标沟通)

     

     

    T can introduce the knowledge about the Dragon Boat Festival and the Spring Festival according to the video.(中国传统文化节日学习,既丰富学生的对传统文化的了解、增加其关于节日表达的储备也为1a的练习作铺垫。)

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    此处由传统文化节日过渡到亚洲其他国家的传统节日。

     

           The T shows Ss pictures of the traditional Chinese festivals (the Dragon Boat Festival, the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival) and then asks them to say the Chinese name and English name of each festival.

    (Tips: Give Ss some clues if they have difficulty in recognizing the pictures. Show the answers directly if Ss cannot tell the English name of each festival.)

           Ask Ss to watch a video about the Dragon Boat Festival and answer the questions:

    1. Where did the Dragon Boat Festival come from?
    2. What do people eat on the Dragon Boat Festival?

    (Answers can be find in the video.)

    T can teach the cultural lexicon about the Dragon Boat Festival:

    the dragon boat race 赛龙舟  the Chinese lunar calender 农历

    a great Chinese poet 一位伟大的中国诗人

           Ask Ss to watch a video and then introduce the Spring Festival to their partners.

    T can use the prompts:

    1. When is the Spring Festival?
    2. What do Chinese people do during the Spring Festival?
    3. What is the legend of the Spring Festival?

    T can teach the cultural lexicon about the Spring Festival to Ss:

    The first day of the first lunar month 正月初一  

    family reunion 家庭团聚    Spring Festival travel rush 春运

    New Years Eve on the lunar calendar 除夕

    worship the kitchen god 祭灶神 

    put up Spring Festival couplet 贴春联

    Staying up late on New Years Eve 守岁

    have a New Years Eve dinner 吃年夜饭

    Spring Festival Gala 春节联欢晚会

    receive/give the red envelop /给红包

           Show a picture of the Water Festival in Thailand and ask Ss if they know this festival. (If yes, ask Ss to introduce a little bit of the festival; if no, ask Ss to describe the picture.)

           The T introduces the background knowledge of the Water Festival.

    * PPT P10 A clean slate is a slang. T can explain the cultural meaning of it:

    过去儿童在石板上写字,写错了就把它擦去重写。后来人们用a clean slate“一块干净的石板”比喻“重新开始”。

    Step 2 Free Talk

    Step 1为输入性学习,学生在Step 1中了解不同节日的背景知识以及相关表达,Step 2为学生提供输出机会,这一步骤也是对Step 1学习的一个简单反馈。

           Ask Ss to work in pairs or in groups of four and talk about their favorite festivals.

    (Tip: Ss can talk about the festivals theyve learned in Step 1 or any festival they want and the answers will be varied.)

            T can ask a few Ss to share their answers to the whole class.

    Step 3 Presentation & Practice

     

    Pre-listening

    1a

           Ask Ss to match the pictures with the descriptions.

           Ask Ss to read the conversation in 1a and guess which festival they are talking about.

    Answers: 1.d 2.a 3.b 4.c

    While-listening

    1b

           Show the video of the conversation in 1b and ask Ss to finish the exercises.

           Ask Ss to listen to the conversation again and finish the multiple choice questions.

    Answers: 1.F 2.T 3.F 4.T

           Show listening material to Ss if necessary.

    Post-listening

    1c

           Ask Ss to read the conversation in 1c.

           Ask Ss to work in pairs and talk about festivals in 1a following the model.

    T can give Ss examples if they have difficulty in doing this exercise. (See PPT P20-21)

    Step 4 Language points learning

     

    Exclamatory Statements(感叹句)

    1. 了解人什么是感叹句

    2. 学习what引导的感叹句:What + a /an +形容词+可数名词单数形式 (+主语+谓语)!, 口语中常可以省略主语和谓语。what引导的感叹句结构还可以是:What +形容词+可数名词复数或不可数名词(+主语+谓语)!

    3. 学习how引导的感叹句:How +adj./adv.(+主语+谓语) !

    Words meaning(词义学习)

    1. crowded  adj. 拥挤的,n. 人群;群众,v. 挤;靠近;盯着

    2. wonder作动词表示“想知道” ,后面接由who/what/why/how引导的宾语从句或“特殊疑问词+动词不定式”, 意为“想知道......”。wonder后面还可以接if / whether引导的宾语从句, 表示“想知道是否......, 表示一种委婉的请求或疑问。

    wonder还可以作名词, 表示“惊讶; 惊叹”, “奇观; 奇迹”。

           Ask Ss to do the exercises from PPT P31-32.

    Homework:

           Preview 2a-2d.

           Do the exercises in students book.    

    Teaching Reflection

    This is the first period of unit 2. It is important to let the students know that they will learn to give personal reactions and express their strong feelings using exclamatory statements in this unit. Beside, the background knowledge of different festivals will be very helpful because the students will learn festivals in both Asian and western countries.
