They can’t talk, walk, or even point at what they’re thinking about. But newborns begin to develop language skills long before they begin speaking. And, compared to adults, they develop these skills much more quickly.Studies show that, up to about 6 months of age, babies can recognize (认出) all the sounds that make up all the languages in the world. There are about 6,000 sounds that are spoken in languages around the world, but not every language uses every sound. For example, while the Swedish language has 16 vowel sounds, English uses 8 vowel sounds, and Japanese uses just 5.Adults can hear only the sounds used in the languages they speak fluently (流利地). To a native Japanese speaker, for example, the letters R and L sound the same.In a similar way older babies start recognizing the patterns (模式) that make up the rules of their native language. In English, for example, children who are about 18 months old start to understand that words ending in “-ing” or “-ed” are usually verbs, and that verbs are action words.Scientists are especially interested in the brains of people who speak more than one language fluently because that is hard to do after about age 7.In one experiment, for example, native Chinese speakers spoke Chinese to 9-month-old American babies for 12 periods over 4 weeks. Each period lasted about 25 minutes. In the end, the American babies reacted to Mandarin (普通话) sounds just as well as Chinese babies who had been hearing the language their whole lives. At about the age of seven these skills slow down. It gets harder to memorize new sounds. So, if you don’t start studying a foreign language until middle school, you must fight against years of brain development.A 12-year-old’s brain has to work much harder to build language connections than an infant’s (婴儿) brain does. Yet in the United States, learning foreign languages usually begins as late as high school.1. When are the babies used to the sounds that people make to communicate with them? A. At 6 months old. B. At 9 months old. C. At 18 months old. D. At 7 years old.2. According to the passage, scientists believe ________. A. it’s better to start to learn a foreign language before the age of 7 B. it’s better to start to learn a foreign language after the age of 7 C. it’s easier for children over 12 to build language connections D. it’s harder for children under 7 to memorize new sounds3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Speaking goes together with listening when babies start developing language skills. B. The older one is, the more sounds used in languages one can recognize. C. An 18-month-old baby has got some sense of grammar. D. The example given in Paragraph 7 mainly shows that environment is important in learning a foreign language.4. Which of the following is the proper title for the passage? A. Language is made up of sounds and rules B. Language learning speeds brain development C. Adults can learn foreign languages like babies D. Babies are good language learners                             B "Please help me! It's in my bathroom! It's moving!" the woman cried. "What is it that's moving?" Robert answered calmly."A spider!" the woman shouted back at him.Robert believes that a significant number of the calls are not emergencies. The actual number across the country is close to 75%Firstly, there are "silent calls". The emergency number is dialed, but when an operator answers, no one speaks. Often it's a small child or even a pet who has been playing with her phone and has accidentally rung the emergency number. Then there are "joke calls", often from teenagers. An operator answers the phone and the caller immediately hangs up. Robert believes these are declining, as there are far fewer public payphones these days. "People are less interested to make a call when they are doing it from their own mobile phone and they know we have their number! The police always follow up both types of calls. It's a huge waste of money, the average (平均的) cost of responding to a silent or joke call is around £250.The great numbers of the none-emergency calls are like those from the woman above. Asituation like this isn't an emergency. But this example is far from the worst. What do you think of the following?A teenager girl in America called the police because her parents had decorated her room and she didn't like the colorA mother in Italy rang the emergency services when her 16-year-old son refused to get out of the bed.A Brazilian teenage boy rang and asked the police to remove a video of him from YouTube In the video, the boy was falling off his bike. There are many other examples, and most of these are from adults. These calls waste more than time and money. "If someone makes a joke call and the police manage to find them, then they can expect a fine of up to f 5,000,and even a prison sentence(监禁)," warns Robert. "But for people whose emergency aren't really serious, we simply try to deal with their calls as quickly as possible, he continues. "The person often quickly realizes their situation isn't really an emergency and ends up apologizing(道歉) for calling us. But if someone refuses to listen, then we have to hang up Someone with a real emergency is probably waiting to speak to us.".5. What does the underlined word "declining" probably mean?A. Getting serious.B.Turning worse.C.Getting useless. D.Becoming less. 6. Why are there so many none-emergency calls?A. Operators give excellent service. B. Callers do not take any responsibilities C. Dealing with none-emergency costs little. D. Many don't consider it an improper behavior7. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. Emergency services.            B. Is it an emergency? C. Different kinds of emergency calls. D. Who is to be responsible?
