1. election n. 选举

*In America,  presidential elections are held every four years.

美国每四年举行一次总统选举。

*There is a leader in each area of the town and each town has an elected leader.

城镇里的每个地区都有一个领导人, 每个城镇都有一个选出来的领导人。

*Those electing to smoke will be seated at the rear.

选择抽烟的人将坐在后面。

(1)run for election　　　参加竞选

(2)elect    vt. 选举, 推选; 选择

elect sb. to. . .  选举某人进入……

elect sb. as/to be. . .  选举某人为……

elect to do sth.  选择做某事

elect表示“选举”, 主要指选举某人担任某职位。若所涉及的职位名词在句中作宾语、表语、补语, 则通常不用冠词。

【巧学助记】

In the latest election, Mary was elected chairwoman of the Students’ Union.

在最近一次选举中, 玛丽被选为学生会主席。

2. coverage n. 新闻报道; 覆盖范围

*The media coverage was shocking.

媒体的报道糟透了。

*Green coverage rate over 60%,  the environment of the factory is beautiful. 绿化面积达到60%以上, 厂区环境优美。

*The lake was covered with a sheet of ice.

湖面上覆盖着一层冰。

cover　　　　　　　　vt. 覆盖; 报道; 行走(一段路程); 包含, 涉及; 够付; 占(一片面积)

be covered with/by 被……覆盖

cover sth. up (with) (用……完全)盖住, 遮住

Don’t judge a book by its cover. (Never judge from appearances. )

3. debate n. & vi. & vt. 讨论, 辩论

*There had been much debate on the issue of childcare.

人们对儿童保育问题议论纷纷。

*She debated with herself for a while,  and then picked up the phone.

她作了一番思想斗争, 然后拿起了电话。

(1)a debate on/about/over sth. 　就……进行讨论

under debate 在讨论中

(2)debate with sb. /oneself 与某人讨论/仔细考虑, 斟酌

debate whether/how. . .  讨论是否/如何……

【易混辨析】

(1)语法填空

①They debated for over an hour on the merits of the different systems.

②The issue is under debate.

(2)We have been debating whether to go on vacation.  

我们一直在讨论是否去度假。

(3)It’s hard to argue him into changing his mind.  

很难说服他改变主意。

4. available adj. 可获得的, 可用的; 有空的

*Tickets are available free of charge from the school.

学校有免费票。

*The director was not available for comment.

主管没有时间发表意见。

*We live in an age when more information is available with greater ease than ever before.

我们生活在一个比以往更容易获得更多信息的时代。

5. acknowledge vt. 承认, 认可; 对(某人所做的事)表示感谢; 告知收到

*She acknowledged your help in her letter.

她在信中感谢你的帮助。

*The company acknowledged the receipt of the goods.

公司已确认收到货物。

*It is widely acknowledged that child labor is illegal.

招收童工是违法的, 这是大家所公认的。

acknowledge. . . to be/as. . .  认为……是……

It is widely acknowledged that. . .  ……是大家所公认的

(2)acknowledgement n. 承认; 感谢

in acknowledgement of. . .  为表示对……的感谢; 以承认……

It is widely acknowledged that students should be evaluated in terms of overall quality. 人们普遍认为应该从综合素质的角度来评价学生。

6. consult vi & vt. 咨询; 商议　vt. 查阅

*Go and consult your teacher about how to deal with this problem. 去请教你的老师如何解决这个问题。

*He consulted the manual. 他查阅了说明书。

(1)consult sb. about sth. 　　　　向某人咨询某事

consult with sb. about/on sth.  与某人商量/商议某事

(2)consultant n. 顾问

【巧学助记】图文助记 consult

consult作“查阅”讲时, 相当于refer to或turn to, 后面接要查询的工具书; look up也有“查阅”之意, 但它后面需接要查询的问题或内容。

(1)语法填空

①She consulted with her parents about the way to do the matter.

②He felt quite honored to become the President’s consultant (consult) on economic affairs.

③Kevin consulted his teacher about/on whether he should study abroad after graduation.

(2)When in doubt about the meaning of a word, consult a dictionary.  

当拿不准词义时, 查查词典。

(3)If any of these symptoms occurs while you are taking the medicine,  consult your doctor immediately. 在服药期间如果出现这些症状中的任何一个, 立即去咨询你的医生。 

7. alternative adj. 可替代的; 另外的; 非传统的, 另类的　n. 可供选择的事物

*The couple have an alternative lifestyle.

那对夫妇的生活方式很另类。

*To stay where I was is my only alternative.

留在原地是我唯一的选择。

*We had no alternative but to fire Gibson.

我们别无他法, 只有辞退吉布森。

an alternative to. . . 　……的替代品

“别无选择只好做某事”还可表示为: cannot but do sth. ;  have no choice but to do sth. ;  cannot help but do sth. 。
