Mst f us wh grew up befre the appearance f smartphnes and scial media can remember adults using phrases like “serius reading” r can name peple in ur circle wh claimed certain bks changed their lives. Early n, we were imbued (灌输) with the idea that reading ften had a lasting and pwerful influence n the peple we wuld becme.
In middle schl, I greatly disappinted my English teacher father by telling him I had n lve fr the written wrd. But in high schl, I discvered the ppular fictin f Stephen King, Dean Kntz and Tm Clancy. In cllege, what I read and, mre imprtantly, why I read, became central themes in my search fr knwledge.
I discvered when I tk time t read deeply, life became filled with pssibilities in a way it never had. It is ne f the reasns I became a teacher, t share this happiness with yung minds.
Once a student asked me, “Why are we required t read these stries? What’s the pint ? “ I n lnger remember my respnse, but I have never frgtten his wrds t me. “I never really thught reading like that befre,” he said. “It really gives me smething t think abut.” At that mment, I fell in lve with teaching.
Yet in my tw decades f teaching high schl, perhaps the biggest change I have nticed is that the belief that reading bth enlarges and inspires life itself has largely vanished (消失) frm the lives f my yung students. Tday’s teenagers certainly read all day --psts and tweets--but it is all f a temprary, casual nature.
Then the era(时代) f the smartphne invaded the classrm, and everything changed.
Sme f my students are aware f what is happening t them. I nce asked a class ff high schl senirs what advice they wuld give their freshman selves. A student said, “I wuld thrw my phne away.” This yung man recgnized he had t d smething drastic. D the rest f us?

“G ahead.” I tld Linda. “Pick up the rck, and see what's under it.”
Her 4-year-ld arms struggled with the rck buried in the stream bed. Her eyes gt big as she examined the wrms (蠕虫) after their nest was uncvered. She watched quietly, as they walked past her ft. She gently put the rck back and said, “Are there wrms under all the rcks?”
This wasn't schl - it was a nature-based summer camp in New Yrk's Hudsn Valley that Iran when I was 17. When I turned the kids ver t their parents at the end f the day, they were tired, inspired by nature and knwledge.
Finland's “frest kindergartens” use the natural wrld as a jumping ff pint fr early academic instructin t make them enjy learning. Finland is fllwing in the ftsteps f ther Eurpean cuntries including Denmark, where utdr educatin has been cmmn fr many years.
In the Finnish prgram, kids spend fur days f a week, frm 8:30 a.m. t 6:30 p.m., utside with a teacher. Built int the prgram is quite a bit f playtime. Kids get a lt f exercise and lessn plans are freely made s teachers can use what’s at hand and in seasn in their lessns.
While all this sunds less strict than a classrm-based kindergarten prgram, the results shw that these types f prgrams have better results fr verall physical health as well as academic perfrmance and scial develpment. But aren't the kids wh d this cming frm wealthy, educated cmmunities- s, f curse they scre better n tests? In fact, the greatest gains frm spending time utdrs can be fund in kids wh are cming frm less advantageus backgrund. At a schl near Atlanta, where kids spend 30 percent f their day utside, students have imprved scres mre than students frm any ther schl in their area, and mst f the kids there cme frm pr families.
    28. Why did the authr ask Linda t turn ver the rck?
    A. T help Linda be independent.B. T give Linda a chance t study nature.

    C. T ppularize utdr educatin.D. T shw the imprtance f play.

    A. seem t be less tiringB. have n teachers arund
    C. set many strict rulesD. have n fixed lessn plans
    31. What is an advantage f utdr prgrams accrding t the last paragraph?
    A. They d gd t cmmunities.B. Kids jining them scre higher n tests.
    C. They help change pr kids ' families. D. Kids meet peple different frm them.

Fingers pint at climate change. As areas becme t ht r dry, many wildlife ppulatins are declining. while sme species are shwing up in places that were histrically t cld r wet.
Our team, led by Alba Estrada, wanted t explain this phenmenn. If we culd predict which species can and can’t clnise (移居于) new lcatins, we culd decide which are mst in need f cnservatin.
Hw far individual animals r plant seeds can mve was lng thught t be the mst imprtant factr. But accrding t ur findings, ther characteristics als turned ut t be highly imprtant. Fr example, hw quickly plants and animals can prduce, hw well they can cmpete with ther species fr resurces, and what kinds f fd they can eat r habitat they can live in.
The result f this is that we might be able t predict which animals will survive under climate change. The wd muse is fund thrughut cntinental Eurpe. As climate changes, we think the muse will mve nrth because it can breed quickly, live in lts f habitats, has a brad diet and individuals can travel a lng way. On the ther hand, cnsider the Eurpean grund squirrel. We think it might stay just in sutheast Eurpe because it can nly live in grasslands—and climate change wn’t suddenly turn farms and frests int meadws (草坪).
It’s encuraging t knw that sme species are ding well under climate change. There are sme headaches, hwever. Thse gilt-head bream are feeding n the lcal shellfish, which might be taking fd away frm the native fish. Small red-eyed damselflies lk great, but they culd becme all t cmmn arund British pnds and utcmpete native species. Climate change is nce again psing us sme tricky cnservatin questins.
    32. We can learn frm paragraphs 1&2 that ________.
    A. peple hld events t bserve different species
    B. visitrs have damaged the hmes f many species
    C. species preferred extremely cld and wet envirnment
    D. climate change makes sme species mve t new areas
    33. What's paragraph 4 mainly abut?
    A. What factrs can influence clnizatin.
    B. Hw far individual animals can travel.
    C. Why sme species are declining.
    D. Where mst species tend t live.
    34. Which might stand the least chance f clnisatin?
    A. Gilt-head bream. B. Red-eyed damselflies.
    C. Wd mice. D. Grund squirrels.
    35. What's the team’s attitude twards the clnisatin?
    A. Ambiguus. B. Dubtful. C. Objective. D. Optimistic
