The idea f climbing Everest disgusted me. The muntain came t represent the ppsite f everything that I lved and respected abut climbing. What had nce been the final muntain climbing gal became the fcus f a cmmercial guiding industry. Over the years, the crwds at Base Camp grew, leaving behind tns f trash. That's prbably where my persnal Everest stry wuld have ended, were it nt fr an ld friend and his bsessin (念念不忘)with ne f the greatest mysteries. In 1999, Thm Pllard began t explre and fund the remains f Gerge Mallry, the celebrated British climber wh disappeared while attempting t be the first t climb Everest. But Mallry's partner, Sandy Irvine - and the camera he had likely carried - were nt fund. The muntain climbing wrld has been wndering whether they might have reached the tp in 1924.
Pllard's stry mved me. I began t pack fr the climb and expected that ur advanced equipment wuld make it manageable, perhaps easy. I was wrng. On the highest pint n the planet, I was mre tired than I'd ever been in any climbing. Alng the way, I cntinuusly tipped my hat, nt just t Mallry and Irvine but t anyne wh has the drive t push himself r herself up this rute. My search was in vain, but I began t recnsider Everest.
I witnessed many climbers, wh were much mre than just self-centered turists. We shared rute infrmatin, weather frecasts, and family phts - all united arund cmmn gals.
I went t Everest t seek Irvine. But in the end, I fund smething mre difficult t get: the spirit that Irvine and Mallry shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been: inside the brave suls wh risk s much t fllw in stried adventurers' ftsteps up Everest.

The participants in the high-emtin cnditin shwed significantly less change in their pinins acrss time.
"Emtinality is an unrecgnized predictr (预测因子)f lng-lasting pinins, said Andrew Luttrell, a researcher at Ball State University. "These findings are imprtant fr understanding why sme pinins are s difficult t change as well as hw t create pinins that stick."
