Can yu imagine a wrld withut a writing system fr yur language? It may be hard t picture it nw. but a man named Sequyah lived in such a wrld. Sequyah was a member f a native American tribe(部落)the Cherkee. Cherkee peple speak their wn language, but fr hundreds f years they did nt have a system f writing. Withut a writing system, the Cherkee had n newspapers r bks befre 1809.
Sequyah was prbably brn arund the year 1770 and lived with his mther in a small village in the muntains f Tennessee. When he grew up, he became a blacksmith(铁匠). When he was ding business with thse “English-speaking peple” he nticed that they used paper with marks t recrd their thughts and ideas. Sequyah called these pieces f paper with marks “talking leaves”. He began t wnder why peple wh speak Cherkee did nt have a way t write dwn their wrds.
In 1809, Sequyah decided t give the Cherkee their wn “talking leaves”. At first he tried t make a different symbl fr every wrd in the Cherkee language. But in that case, there wuld be s many symbls and t hard fr peple t remember, s he decided t make a picture fr each syllable(音节). After much hard wrk, Sequyah invented 85 symbls.
