It is said that Halloween is the children's New Year's Eve. They dress up with special costumes (服装), they eat too much, and they stay up too late celebrating.
Children go around the neighborhood wearing make-up, and dress in masks and colorful costumes. The most common costumes are witches, ghosts, skeletons (骷髅), and popular TV, movie and storybook characters. Some costumes are homemade; others are bought in stores. Homes, stores, and classrooms are decorated in the traditional Halloween colors, orange and black. Usual decorations are witches, ghosts, skeletons, and Jack-o'-lanterns, Jack-o'-lanterns are pumpkins that are carved (雕刻) to look like faces. They are placed on doorway entrances and in windows. Horror movies and ghost stories are shown on TV on this day.
Adults and older children also celebrate Halloween with parades, festivals, and costume parties. Some people create their costumes; other people rent them. Your action can speak louder than your words. It is important to know another language and how to communicate without words when you are in another country. Before saying anything, people communicate with each other by using gestures(手势). However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world.
In the United States, nodding your head up and down means “yes”, while in some parts of Greece and Turkey, it means “no”. In the southeast of Asia, it is a polite way of saying “I heard you”.
Today in the USA, when someone puts his thumb(大拇指) up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Greece it is bad manners to do so. Also putting your clasped(紧握的)hands up above your head means “I am the winner.” It is the sign which players often make. In Russia it is the sign of friendship.
In the USA, holding your hand up with the thumb and index finger(食指)in a circle, and the other three straight means “Everything is OK.” In France, it means “You are worth nothing.”
It is also important to make eye communication. If you look down when talking to an American, he or she may feel that you are shy, or you are trying to hide something.
Besides these, you should also know there are some topics that can not be talked about, such as age, weight and marriage. You can talk about the weather, work, sports, food, where one lives and news of the day.
- What does the sentence “Your action can speak louder than your words” in paragraph 1 mean?
- What you do is better than what you say.
B. You try your best to be polite.

B. it is important to know what you talk about to a foreigner.
C. to know how to communicate without words is as important as to know the language.
D. to communicate through gestures is more important than to know the language.

Many expressions that we use in American English come from novels. Today we will look at some of them from Lewis Carroll’s famous novel Alice in Wonderland in detail.
The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange words. Alice chases him, and that is where her adventures begin.
In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in a misleading situation.
Then, as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a confusing situation. However, usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of distraction (分神). It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful.
Later in the story, Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party. Hares (野兔) have long been thought to behave excitedly in March. Scientifically, this may not be true. But to be mad as a March Hare means that someone is completely mad, or crazy. The expression mad as a Hatter also means to be completely crazy. Of the two, mad as a Hatter is more common. But donˈt tell the March Hare. Who knows how he will react!
Near the end of the story, Alice meets the Queen of Hearts. A woman who is called a Queen of Hearts likes controlling others and always tries to control everything and everyone around her.
- Which of the following situations best fits the expressions to fall down a rabbit hole?
- When Tom was taking a walk in the forest, he suddenly fell over onto the ground.
B. When Mary turned on the TV, she chose to watch the talk show programme as usual.
C. When Jim was looking for a sport book online, he lost himself in many report on superstars.
D. When Lily was thinking about how to solve a math problem, she came up with a good idea.
- According to the passage, the expression to be mad as a March Hare____________.
- describes how hares behave in March
B. shows hares’ characteristics in a scientific way
C. is used more often than the expression mad as a Hatter
D. has the same meaning as the expression mad as a Hatter
- Which character in Alice in Wonderland wants others to obey his or her orders in every situation?
- Alice. B. The March Hare.
C. The Hatter. D. The Queen of Hearts.
- The writer mainly wants to ____________in the passage.
A. introduce a famous novel and its language style
B. introduce a famous writer Lewis Carroll and his novels
C. explore some English expressions from a famous novel

第二节 (满分25分)

On Christmas Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was ﹩2.99,white bread, 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves. "Where are they?" Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just ﹩35.00, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
"Society has changed, people have changed," he murmured to himself. "Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost."
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.
