ADear MaryHow are you? I saw you posted some wonderful photos  of the coastline near your hometown.  You're  really  getting  into  your photography! Right now I'm taking a break from social media (媒体) to write you an email.Remember you said you'd like to come over to the UK sometime this year? Well, I was thinking that this year you might like to come to the Edinburgh Festival with me in August. I've got an aunt with a flat in the city centre who could put us up.Do you know much about the festival? It's very famous — the biggest, most popular arts festival in the world! There are lots of things going on — art exhibitions (展览), concerts of all kinds, modern dance, a book festival, etc. The thing it's most famous for is the newest and most exciting theatre. People come from all over the world and perform (表演) in their own language. In Scotland you have the best of both worlds: culture and wild land. After the festival, we could hire () a car and go up to some of the islands off the west coast, like Skye. The weather can be changeable in August, but the landscape (风景) is beautiful, with empty beaches and rocky mountains. It's the perfect place for you to take photos. Afterwards, we could head back to the east coast and visit my friend Rob in St. Andrews. It's really pretty and Rob's enjoyable to be with. You'd get on well with him.So, why don't you have a think about it and then get back to me? Take your time, there's no rush.Speak to you soonSophie 【语篇解读】 本文是应用文。 1What is the best known activity at the Edinburgh Festival?AModern dance.BArt exhibitions.CPerformances of plays.DDifferent kinds of concerts. The thing it's most famous for is... perform in their own language可知,爱丁堡艺术节最出名的活动是最新且最激动人心的戏剧表演。2What does Sophie suggest doing straight after the festival?ASeeing her friend Rob in St. Andrews.BDriving along the east coast of Scotland.CTaking photos while climbing mountains.DVisiting islands along the west coast of Scotland. After the festival... the west coast, like Skye可知,Sophie建议参加完爱丁堡艺术节之后,驱车前往苏格兰西部海岸沿岸的一些岛屿游玩。3Why did Sophie send this email to Mary?ATo invite her to visit Scotland.BTo talk about her holiday plan.CTo take a break from social media.DTo introduce the Edinburgh Festival. BIf you're planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.First of all, always check and doublecheck departure (起程) time. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 1050. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting. The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency (货币) with you when you arrive in a country. This can be necessary if you are flying to a place few tourists normally visit. Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. Listen! I only take real money the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing. The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.【语篇解读】 作者就外出旅行给读者提了三点建议。 4Where is the writer most probably from?AItaly.   BThe USA.CBritain.  DGreece. 根据第三段... because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. 5According to the passage, the driver was angry because ________.Athe author gave him the false (假的) moneyBthe author did not give him the local moneyCthe author offered to pay by credit cardDthe author had no enough change答案与解析:B 细节理解题。 Listen! I only take real money可知,司机的意思是他只收他们国家的钱,也就是美元,而且作者举这个例子是为了说明随身携带当地货币的重要性,故选B项。6Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?AThe author tells people to choose warm places as their travel destinations.BYou don't have to take credit cards when travelling.CYou should know more about the weather of the place you'll visit.DIt's unnecessary to check the departure time carefully. The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. 7The writer mainly tells us ________.Ahow to make life easierBhow to be well prepared for a tripChow to enjoy ourselves on a tripDhow to plan our trip答案与解析:B 主旨大意题。 If you're planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey. CWhen we are young we are taught that it's wrong to lie and we should always tell the truth. Unfortunately, most children lie even if they're told not to. Research carried out at the Institute of Child Study at Toronto University has shown that this might not be such a bad thing. Apparently (显然地), children who tell lies when they're two years old have a good chance of becoming successful adults (成年人)According to the research, at the age of two, 20 percent of children lie. At the age of three, 50 percent lie, and at four almost 90 percent lie. By the age of 12 almost every child tells lies.Lying needs much brain work. and the better the lie is, the more work the brain has to do. By training  the  brain  early,  researchers  believe children will be able to think more clearly when they are adults.Recent research, carried out by the Science Museum in London, has shown some interesting facts about the way we lie as adults. According to the research, the average British man tells three lies every day, that's over 1,000 lies a year. However, the average woman apparently only lies twice a day. Most people think women are better liars (说谎者) than men although in fact they tell fewer lies. Popular women's lies include  Nothing's wrong, I'm fineI don't know where it is, I haven't  touched itand It wasn't that expensive’.Some people say you can lie as long as it's a white lie. A white lie is a lie told to avoid hurting someone's feelings. One of the most common lies for both men and women is It's_just_what_I've_always_wantedsaid after opening a present from their partner.【语篇解读】 本文是说明文。 8What will happen to young children who lie?AThey will possibly do wrong later.BThey're likely to succeed in the future.CThey will keep lying when they grow up.DThey may have a good chance of losing others' trust. 根据第一段中的children who tell lies when they're two years old have a good chance of becoming successful adults可知,撒谎的小孩在以后很可能会取得成功。9What do the numbers in Para. 2 show about children?AOlder children tell bigger lies than younger ones.BAs they grow, they often lie about their age.CThe older they are, the more likely they lie.DIt's quite natural for them to tell lies. 10What did the research by the Science Museum find out?AMen lie more than women.BWomen are better liars than men.CWomen's lies are usually not serious.DMen sometimes have to lie to women. According to the research, the average British man tells three lies every daythe average woman apparently only lies twice a day可知,男性比女性说的谎多。11What's the true feeling behind the underlined part in the last paragraph?AYou know me so well.BI don't like the present.CYou are good at picking presents.DI haven't received a present I really like. A white lie is a lie told to avoid hurting someone's feelings的举例,由此可知,画线部分是一句善意的谎言,其实说话者并不喜欢这件礼物。
